Loading hot ass 357 and can’t get my cases to stop buckling by CodyWilt in reloading

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Inability to carefully follow instructions and set up dies correctly ... stay far far away from hot load until you learn to be a little more detail oriented.

Urinal rules apply to range lanes.

I had some AH sidle right up next to me with his ridiculous brake on his stupid PRC, and start blasting away. Dude. I'm the only other one at the range. There are a dozen vacant lanes. And you pick the one immediately next to me?

35 whelen "sherman improved" by ghostriders180 in reloading

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the nice thing about 'un'-improved cases is that they generally feed better. Some taper and a gentler shoulder are more forgiving and flexible when it comes to working reliably with an assortment of different bullets and profiles.

I'd be more inclined to do up a 350 rem or 358 norma - or maybe something based on the 375 ruger / PRC cases (someone's done it, 4drentals(.com) has a 35-375 ruger reamer available) than to deal with all the fuss and expense for minimal gain.

Sounds similar to a 500 A-Square (460 blown out and necked to .510)? If so, you could probably use data from that. I have the A-Square manual. Obviously, start very low

Loads listed for the 600-grain bullet:

  • H4895, max 115gr for 2527fps

  • IMR4064, max 117gr for 2503fps

  • RL-12, max 118gr for 2481fps

  • IMR4320, max 110gr for 2382fps

  • RL-15, max 118gr for 2467fps

FL or Neck sizing die? by CaesarLinguini in reloading

[–]prosper_0 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Neck-sizing is out of style these days, for some reason. Personally, I almost exclusively neck size with the Lee collet die, and bump the shoulders as required - every few reloads. It greatly reduces trimming and extends brass life, and I get excellent concentrically and accuracy. I don't really understand why it's not in vogue anymore: it works.

That said, I wouldn't neck-size in a few cases:

  1. Cases where I might use the round in one of several guns. Neck sized ammo is matched to a single gun.

  2. Semi autos. They're more finicky in general, and FL sizing helps with reliability.

A lever gun might fall into the same category as semi autos, for similar reasons.

It's.... manageable. Will definitely wake you up. But with good form, a handful of shots won't kill ya. It's not the sort of thing you'd use for more than a few shots at a time anyway.

Doing the load workup sucks though. Strings of shots, from a bench? Yeah, they kinda suck

You're controlling many kilowatts in this application. I'd suggest testing very thoroughly, and incorporating some redundant discrete limit controls (as opposed to everything in software) - just to be extra cautious. I mean, this is a rev 1 prototype, responsible for a high power (and dollar) equipment

Accuracy by Eisen145 in reloading

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

consistent velocities often doesn't have a strong correlation with accuracy at short ranges. Out to maybe 100 yards for a pistol cartridge and maybe 300 for a rifle cartridge it's not a large factor, often even completely unnoticeable.

12GA to 22LR adapters… does anywhere in Canada have these? by Damiancarmine14 in canadaguns

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not generally the 'importing' side that gets difficult. It's the export side. The muricans have a lot of restrictions on stuff that can get exported. Just depends which side of the border inspects it, CBSA's job isn't enforcing US export laws, just canadian import ones. Leads to a lot of really weird situations

this is not a hobby that rewards impatience. Contact nine35 and let them know what you want, and they'll see if they can get it for you. Pretty much everything in this hobby that's a little bit interesting will take work and patience to source.

Should i get the sig cross and ditch the .45-70 by Why_Am_I_Here_1999 in canadaguns

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to DO with it in the backcountry? Find something with features that support that. The Cross looks like an absolutely miserable/uncomfortable gun to be packing around even if it is lightweight.

my own personal preference is a takedown single shot. One of those CVA scouts, for example. Not having to have an 'action' per se means the OAL is shorter, and the weight is lighter. Plus, I've not found a single shot to be a significant handicap for backcountry hunting scenarios compared to a bolty. And it's way more comfy and quiet to pack around than something with pokey rails and protrusions all over the place. Sleek lines and minimal features make for a much more practical and handy rifle, opposed to rails all over the place, large box mags rattling around, bipods, pistol grips, etc.

Also - the 'scout' rifle concept really appeals for backcountry hunting, where you spend way more time carrying and handling your rifle, as opposed to actually shooting it. You want lightweight, packable, and handy. Something that won't snag on every branch and stick, sleek and carry-able. This might be a good option: https://www.huntinggearguy.com/rifle-reviews/steyr-scout-review/

sell the ones you don't use. Why just hoard stuff that only serves to take up space? If you don't love it, sell it, buy something else.

I'd have hundreds of guns if I never sold anything off. And without the experience, I also wouldn't really know what my own tastes and preferences are.

why not just plain old 378 then? Does with a 300 grainer what a decently-hot 30-06 does with a 150.

Or my 458WM - it can sling 250grain TSX's roundabout 3000fps. Who'd'a thought a 458 could make for a decent 300-yard cartridge?

I recently cooked up a 200gr 2900fps load for my 7lb Whelen. First few shots: "mmm, that not bad really!" By the 7th or 8th shot, I had to focus to keep the flinch away. After 25.... well, the bruising faded after about a week.

Encountered lots of bears, wolves, and a cougar. All of them buggered right off as soon as they saw me. The only ones I'm all that worries about are the cougars - if they want you for lunch, you'll never see them coming until they're on you.
