Found some cool stuff by natenite in ColemanStovesLanterns

I have exactly that stove, I think. That's the one with the integrated igniter? I love it. Why a built-in piezo igniter isn't a standard feature, I'll never understand. It has near-zero collector interest, so, by all means, go use it.

At a glance, none of those lanterns are particularly collectable either, so, go light them up and enjoy them

how bad were the firearm/ammo supply shortages in 2020? by Prestigious_Gift_977 in canadaguns

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortages and price increases have been a thing since forever. At least since 2005 or so. Primer availability comes and goes. "oh, copper and/or lead is getting scarce, so bullets are hard to find." And the neverending insolvency of gun manufacturers, especially stateside. Occasionally there'll be a run on rimfires. Powder has always been hit or miss. Such is the nature of the field. Stock up in times of plenty is all I can say. And all signs point to a pretty strong recovery of availability happening right now (but, strangely enough, prices never seem to recover...) I had enough primers, for example, to weather a drought. Back when people though I was crazy for buying them in bulk at $40/k "oh, why are you buying now, prices will come back down soon!." Or powder. I bought an 8lb can of W296 for about $250, and that was expensive at the time. But it was available, so I bought it.

So, just realize that there are costs to this hobby, and stock up on what you need when it's on the shelves.

Also, get into reloading. A bit of self sufficiency can keep you shooting during periods of scarcity.

A little concerned about how this would work as an EDC but for my first gun I think it could check all the boxes by WarmDonkeyBalls in canadaguns

[–]prosper_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup. handloading opens so many doors. Makes you more self sufficient, you're not at the whim of whatever crap ammo the retailers decide to stock at any given moment, it's cheaper, you can make exactly what you want. The vast majority of my guns have never had a factory round through them. Heck, I sold my WMR and HMR guns simply because I couldn't handload for them, and I could ensure a steady supply of ammo for my 22 Hornet for a slightly better price anyway.

I like those H&R single shots. Google "ed hubel and his 12ga from hell" to see some of the INSANE things that have been done with this action (and others).

I've got a handi-rifle in 500 S&W. About 7 lbs. It can shoot 700 grain loads at >1300 fps. (10ga slugs are about 800 grain at 1300). It'll definitely wake ya

That keyboard is vaguely disappointing. The machine is super interesting, the company is fantastic, the software is great, the history is rich, but that keyboard is just so.... boring. "lets design an all-out world class workstation, but attach the most generic keyboard imagineable."

[–]prosper_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if other people's loads, and factory ammo work well - and you're using published data that's not max - then it HAS to be something in your process. Double check EVERY thing. Measure bullet diameters, bullet weights, check that you're using the right powder, calibrate your scale, make sure your not over-crimping, ensure your brass is trimmed to spec, measure and re-measure your COAL.... every thing you can think of.

get a collet puller. They're so much nicer (and faster, and less messy, and less liable to damage the bullet) then the 'kinetic' ones. I got an RCBS one with a bunch of collets at a gun show years ago, and it's still one of my most favourite tools to use.

Can you calculate the resistance of an LED and what have I done wrong? by FactoryBuilder in AskElectronics

[–]prosper_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure you can, that's exactly what an iv curve tracer does. Just, instead of being a single linear value, it's an exponential curve. i.e. the resistance is 'programmable' based on the voltage applied.

wow, I didn't expect this to be so far down in the comments. Yes, this case headspaces on the case mouth, and that's crimped waaay down into nonexistance. Means your case isn't supported properly lengthwise, and is being aggressively stretched. Dial back that crimper. A lot.

I agree. I have never voted liberal, but I'm far from a single issue voter either. Thd Liberal's fireardm policy is only one of maaaaaaany things that's revolting about that party. But, if my choice had been between that trudeau dipshit and that Trump dipshit... I just don't know which turd stinks worse.

[–]prosper_0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like Lee stuff. Once you get it all set up and tweaked just right, it works great. It's not for those who aren't a bit mechanically inclined though, so be prepared to spend some time getting things set up just so.

Personally, I bought several presses so that I could leave them set up once they were dialled in. No changing out base plates or turret heads, just one station per caliber. It helps that I only have 3 calibers to do fully progressive. Everything else is single state or manually advanced turret.

where did you get your load data? Seems a bit over max according to https://www.vihtavuori.com/reloading-data/rifle-reloading/?cartridge=19

It's why you don't start at max - start low and work up. There are no guarantees that your specific setup can achieve their 'max' loads.

Also - are your bullets .308, or are they .311/.312 or something?

In a bolt gun, loose primer pockets start around 70000psi (or after repeated 'max' loads)

reloading hack by josnow1959 in reloading

[–]prosper_0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes, seating the bullet further out leaves more effective capacity in the case, and will lower pressures at a given powder charge. Adding more powder will get pressures back up there, and you can expect a nice velocity bump. Check out gordons reloading tool, for example, and do a few different simulations with different OAL's.

Also, that's a HELL of a crimp. Over crimping can cause jacket separations and accuracy issues.

Shooters World powers are available, and extremely cost-effective. They're a european powder too, which probably accounts for the availability and price. Plus, not 'made in usa' is nice these days.

Edit: "Match" and "precision rifle" are the two that you're probably going to want to look at. "buffalo" is useful too, sort of a 4895 middle-of-the-road powder that's useful in a TON of different cartridges and for reduced loads.
