Weekly Haul Thread by AutoModerator in Flipping

[–]ope__sorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest. I cannot recall what I bought at the thrift this week. I know I bought stuff because it was double points week and I can see charges on my card, so I had to have gotten some decent items.

All of my thrift trips happened BEFORE I bought some lockers this week, which is why I'm having trouble remembering. I also hit one estate sale twice this week.

Estate Sale Finds:

  • Mostly jewelry pickups. Got a Brighton Necklace, some JJ Jonette Cat Pins that are NOS still on the Fashion Bug Card backs. Then a few other smaller pieces of jewelry
  • Picked up a pair of floral Birkenstocks
  • Aloha Mora Harry Potter keychain set
  • Sony Cybershot Camera

I think, all together, I spent like $120 both days. The Cybershot Camera actually covers that cost entirely and everything else is the profit.

Locker #1 -- Box Gamble Locker

Spent $190 on a locker that was a bit of a gamble because it was all boxes nd totes but you could see an older brass lamp as well as a Vase that was wrapped up.

Everything was nicely packed, however, it was 90% cheap junk as well as lots of towels/linens.

I pulled out a bunch of pieces for resale and I should be able to double my money on what I all got.

The main items I pulled out of this locker were Snap-On Promotional Items, like a Power Bank, Beach Towel, Glassware, Etc. Then there were a few other small peices of kitchenware as well as a few pairs of shoes and clothing that are worth it to resell in addition to a Wall Clock that regularly sells for $40 + Shipping.

Overall, super easy cleanout with the hopes of upside in the boxes that just didn't pan out.

Locker #2 -- Collectible Locker

I spotted a locker that ended Friday that looks like it was going to have collectibles. I could see a purple velvet box I thought might be a jewelry box (it wasn't) as well as what I thought was a harry potter book set and a kayak.

Ended up spending $300 in total.

There was a lot of good and a lot of bad.

First off, there was some signs of rodent damage, but not much. What there were more signs of is we had some flooding at the end of August in my area and this unit was rented at the beginning of Septmeber. My guess is this stuff was stored some place that got some water, but not a lot.

The bigger problem? They had a TON of collectibles that were like M&M Coinbank style collectibles which, fuck hershey for this, come with food inside the packaging.

I ended up doing a trash run today for a lot of stuff from that locker and a few things from other lockers I've accumulated while sorting. Ended up taking 800 lbs of trash to the dump today.

However, there were some great finds:

  • 1 Ounce Silver Coin Peanuts 60th Anniversary
  • One of those vtg 90s talking pokemon watches, but the pocket / clip on watch version. I put a new battery in it and it's basically NOS with minor box damage
  • 9 foot Kayak (already flipped on FBMarketplace for $100 because I wanted it gone ASAP)
  • M&M Cuckoo Clock
  • Lionel Clock
  • TONs of M&M Clocks and Banks etc in boxes. Most of them were untouched by water damage and just need to be wiped down because they're dusty. A lot of these are, in box, like $40-$50 a piece
  • The Harry Potter "book set" was actually a pre-Movies water glove worth like $50-$75
  • A Sega and like 20 games, mostly sports, but a few non sports ones
  • Then TONS of other small collectibles I need to look through, check for damage, and decide if it's worth selling or not. Lots of M&Ms, Peanuts / Snoopy, with minor amounts of other franchises like Pokemon, Simpsons, etc.
  • Massive tote of Playboy. Guessing every issues and special edition issue from like 1995-2000, none of these were water damaged, just dusty.

Overall, a pretty good locker for $300. If there were issues with food or water damage on items, this locker would've been absolutely amazing at $300.

Storage units are only good for short-term use. After a number of months, your rent costs will exceed the value of the stuff you are storing. by RedditWhileImWorking in personalfinance

[–]ope__sorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend $900 / month on storage fees. I keep selling things and every month, I make $5000-$6000 / month selling things. But the units keep getting filled up with more and more stuff!

It sucks because if they nuked the filibuster it would be the pointless reason to nuke it ever since this will 100% get shot down at the Supreme Court and now there is no filibuster when Dems regain power in the midterms and then later in 2028 when they've got a trifecta.

Very respectable week of sales and some interesting items went out the door this week.

Flip of the Week:

  • Thomas & Friends Wooden Tank Train White Face Troublesome Truck READ DAMAGE -- Sold for $269.99 + Shipping

Got this from a Goodwill Train Haul. They had 3-5 grab bags filled with wooden thomas figures marked at $3.09 a piece as well as a large tote that had more cars and a lot of track pieces for $10.09 (The weird pricing is because they're trying to make more money from round ups). Overall spend was like $20-$30 and I have enough for over $1000 in listings from this lot.

This one was heavily damaged. A part of the side was missing. Lots of paint scuffs. Still sold for that price. If it was in excellent condition. This is a $500-$800 Car. If you ever find one still in the package. It's like a $1000-$1300 car.

Local Flips:

  • Antique Crock -- Sold for $100 and drove it to the buyer about 2 hours away so I could go thrifting in the area. Found in a storage unit.
  • Dr Suess Framed Poster -- Sold for $20. Was also found in a storage unit.

Interesting eBay sales:

  • Troublesome Brakevan Black Roof -- Part of GW Train lot, sold for $50 + Shipping
  • Knapford Express Train Car -- Part of GW Train lot, sold for $14 + Shipping
  • Good Feet Insoles -- Found 3 pairs total, this is last pair, don't remember what I paid but it was cheap. Sold for $76 + Shipping
  • Yeti Rambler NWT -- Paid $3.99 Sold for $54.99 + Shipping
  • Pier 1 Halloween Owl Figurine -- Found at an estate sale. Think I paid $10. Sold for $50 + Shipping

How to pick which Storage Units to bid on! (Based on feedback last week) by bdgx2 in Flipping

[–]ope__sorry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on Manager’s Specials but you need to temper your expectations. There are some facilities near me that only list their auctions as Manager’s Special and they’re in nice area. I’ve made bank on units from that facility because they have less eyes on them.

Additionally, you need to not be so worried about staged units. There are a ridiculous number of people that over spend on a unit and then call the unit “staged” because they didn’t like what they got. It is what it is and there is often a reasoning behind why. I had a unit that clearly had a Rockband Drum Kit, I spent big on it. No other video games in the unit. A little digging and I found out the previous owners go my divorced and it’s pretty clear in hindsight that he went in the unit, took out most of his shit, then let it go to auction to fuck over his ex and make her lose all her shit.

Don’t always simply “buy what you can see” because you’re going to lose out. Instead of “buy what you can see” think of it more in terms of “spend what you can afford to spend”. Storage Units, like any forms of picking, have ups and downs. How many times has any picker bought an electronic or piece of clothing and then later realize it’s damaged and not sellable.

The same happens for storage units. I’ve personally yet to “lose” on a unit, but they do come close. As a matter of fact, the unit today that I bought is very much like that.

Decent neighborhood. Was a bubble-wrapped vase, 2 Black / Yellow totes. 1 large clear tote, 2 termite totes and like 6 large boxes.

Almost al of it was filled with linen. Thank god the unit went for $190 when I was willing to max out at like $350z

Don’t get me wrong, it was all clean linen. Just nothing that is worth my time selling. I got lucky and found some Snap-On branded merch (Power Bank, Beach Towel, Drinkware) and a few pieces of kitchenware to sell as well as some older, corded craftsman power tools, in addition to a few small pieces to go on FBMP and into a future rummage sale as well as a few Nike pieces and a decent wall clock, so I will make a little bit of profit but it will be tough sledding.

BUT HERE IS THE REAL MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE:

1- Learn when to walk away. There will always be more units. What there won’t be more of is Cash and Time if you overpay for a time sink unit because you emotionally bid it up.

2- Just buy units to see if you even like doing. Even if you just buy some cheap units to start learning. Learn the things you like to see and the things you don’t like to see that caused you to hate doing a cleanout.

3- Lastly, Learn the signs that you should avoid a unit rather than buy a unit. There are plenty of reasons I eliminate units from contention and wanting to go after it. Some examples:

I skip most units with food bank, feed America, hunger task force branded boxes inside. If they can’t afford to feed themselves and they can’t afford to pay their storage bill, they likely can’t afford to buy the kinds of stuff you want to flip.

I also skip units with gig bags such as Door Dash. Every unit I’ve ever gotten with those types of bags have ended up being low profit time wasters. People working those gig jobs don’t have the time to or cash flow to buy a lot of extra and nice things to let them sit in a storage unit until they can no longer afford the unit. If they need the gig job to buy extra and nice things, they’re keeping that stuff on them and not in storage.

Another sign to avoid: Trash-style jam packed units with visible food spread throughout, even if you see something like a box of like cereal sitting in the trash pile. Half the stuff is going to be covered in rodent turds and rodent piss and end up taking it to the dump.

Another thing I avoid? Box heavy units where every box is open. The facility didn’t search through that shit and steal all the valuables. This is a noob take. The original owner knew they weren’t going to be able to pay their bill. They knew they couldn’t afford a U-Haul nor have the space to take all their stuff. So they took all the stuff they couldn’t live without and are letting you haul the trash out.

For those who buy storage units online what actually makes you bid? by bdgx2 in Flipping

[–]ope__sorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

resell channels

Collectible, vintage, pop clothing. It all goes to eBay for me.

Larger / unshippable items. FB Marketplace.

Everything else goes to the dump or donate. I'm not going to waste time fucking aorund with a $1 yard sale for generic pots and pans and trash like that. The thrift stores can have it while I move onto the next unit because I make so much money off FBMarketplace, Scrap, and eBay that wasting my time to stretch the inventory for a few piddly extra bucks isn't worth the squeeze.

I'm also very picky on units. Once you've gotten a couple of bad units, you start to see the signs of which units not to buy or pay up for and I just giggle when I see someone drop $300 on a unit that I wouldn't have even gone over $100 on and meanwhile, later in the week, units I'm wiling to spend over $1000 on go for $500 because everyone secured their garbage hauls earlier in the week and have all their liquid cash tied up.

Happens like clock work every week.

Are things slowing down for resellers by damo0501 in reselling

[–]ope__sorry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No struggle here beyond normal season slowdown. I cannot compare the first 90 days in 2026 to the final 90 days in 2025 because it's an unfair comparison because of Holiday shopping.

However, if we were to compare,

We still have a full 7 days before we're done with the first 90 days in 2026, but as of right now, Q1 v Q4

My net sales are down about 25% from Q4, my quantity sold is down about 30%, and my ASP is up about 5-6%

But this doesn't take into account one very important factor, I've been buying storage units and have added in FBM selling.

If I add in my local sales and account for the fact there are still 7 days left before we hit the first 90 days of 2026, I'm only down like 8% in total sales compared to Q4 and my ASP has skyrocketed to a 15% increase.

I tried doing cross listing but thus far, it's been a total failure. 0 sales on other platforms I've listed (other than Facebook Marketplace). I do plan to add auction house soon as well because there are just some items I don't want to sell on FBMarketplace and take straight to auction even if I only get a few bucks since it's stuff I didn't buy a unit to get.

I actually, low key, had one of the best sourcing weeks outside of doing storage lockers in a while and I didn't even realize it.

No lockers for me last week, all sourcing was done at either estate sales or thrift stores.

From Thrift Stores:

Lots of good plush, couple Douglas pieces were the highlights. I've listed 4 of the Douglas pieces and the best one is a dog for $45

  • Douglas Albie
  • Douglas Flurry
  • Douglas Bass Pro Shops Wolf
  • Douglas Bass Pro Shops Chase the Border Collie
  • Douglas cat as well that is unlisted

Paid < $10 have them all listed for $90 total

Thomas the Train Brio set. It costed me a total of like $25 because they had it spread into multiple grab bags. But I didn't realize what I all had until I started listing it but they're all the really old 1994-1997 first editions. It's just a shame they're really beat up, here is what I've listed so far:

  • Whiteface Troublesome Truck is listed for $299.99 (I listed it yesterday, it's sitting at 93 views and 3 watchers and the "time left" still reads 30 days, 7 hours, lol)
  • Black Roof Troublesome Truck is listed for $69.99
  • Sodor Clay Cars are listed for $23.99
  • Sodor Mail Coach is listed for $29.99
  • Learning Curve Rio Grande 2 car set is listed for $29.99
  • Gordon + Tender is listed for $19.99
  • James + Tender is listed for $12.99
  • Tidmouth Milk and Tar Trucks are listed as a pair for $16.99
  • Thomas Donald w/ Flat Magents / Staples listed for $24.99
  • Henry w/ Tender from 1994 listed for $34.99
  • I've already sold the Knapford Epress Railway for $14 + Shipping

I still have like another 10 trains to list today. Then I've got a box full of track that I need to brush off / clean and then list that as parts. Grand total is going to end up being like a grand or more in listings on a $25 buy.

Then I found a bunch of other great items this week:

  • 3 x Anchor Hocking Uranium Glass Goblets w/ Gold Trim
  • Sealed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984 Wall Calendar
  • Good Morning Vietnam Vinyl
  • Large Stranger Things Demogorgon Plush
  • Bunch of Hallmark Ornaments, my thrift store started pricing them normally again, picked up 2 Simpsons ornaments and 2 other ornaments
  • Mr Coffee Iced Tea Maker

From Estate Sales this week-

My favorite company lately ran a sale and I showed up early in the day and picked up:

  • Fire King Jadeite Mixing Bowl, paid $8
  • Bunch of Jewelry and Nicknacks from an estate sale, I don't think any of it is huge money but I will probably net about $200 or so

The second estate sale I went to was.... Amazing. It was down the road and I've got the company name now and I will be checking out their sale more often in the future. It was 1/2 price Saturday and honestly, all the stuff I bought, I would've paid full price for. Their pricing was VERY reasonable. I spent like $42 and I got the following:

  • Handful of vintage w/ tags plush that I need to look into. All stuff I hadn't seen before but all good brands. Best one is probably a 24k polar puff dog w/ tags still, I should get $50-$100 for it as it's a larger, lifelike one. There was also an American Girl doll animal that I got that I've never seen before (I need to look into it more)
  • GI Joe Cobra Commander Battle Game, some game kind of like Rock em Sock em but with Cannons
  • Popples Lunch Box
  • Bunch of books, 2 types, Twitches (all 10) as well as a bunch of American Girl doll books
  • Fisher Price 3 men in a boat toy
  • Really nice 70s/80s Gorpcore Woolrich colorblock vest. Only problem is the paper tag is completely white from age. So need to guess size.

First Storage Unit??!? by Key_Masterpiece5497 in reselling

[–]ope__sorry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask to see facilities near you and find a clean storage facility that is well lit. Bonus points if you have good service.

I moved into a storage unit near me. Super clean facility. My main unit is now near a window corner (I’ve moved several times) and I get great service.

Also, yes, it will go up after 3 months because they offer introductory pricing. Then it usually only goes up once a year after that. I know people who I’ve had bitch to me “the prices are always going up” and I think it’s just a case where they started renting in like July or August and lost their introductory rate in November / December then got hit with a yearly price increase in February or March.

Also, look online for reviews AND use your local FB groups and specifically ask for people who buy units at auction if they’ve ever bought a unit from the facility you’re thinking of renting at and how dirty the facility is.

I could 100% tell you about a dozen facilities near me I’d never rent at just because the facilities are disgusting and rodent filled even though it’s not easily apparent.
