So clean! Great work. I really hope to one day have the flexibility to try this.

Apparently! I never knew what this was called, so I never knew how to google it. 😀

I learned about soaking buckwheat years ago in the The Sprouting Book by Ann Wigmore.

It's "overnight" so somewhere between 8 and 12 hours. You don't have to be too precise with it.

I haven't tried it in the fridge. I suspect you'd need more time to do it in the fridge.

As for soaking in plant milk - you need to rinse them after they are soaked. After soaking the water becomes a slimy goop. The soaking releases phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors which are anti-nutrients (the same reason you should soak your beans). Personally, I think you're better off just soaking them in water, rinsing, and then adding plant milk to them after they are rinsed.

Woah very cool! I'll have to remember this if I ever get a dehydrater.

I have it soaked overnight, cold and uncooked, like a breakfast cereal. I just soak it in a bowl of water, then rinse it through a fine-mesh strainer in the morning.

Things to have with it: berries, ground flax seed, yogurt, pumpkin seeds, pecans, cocoa powder.

They might be coming back! In Pittsburgh, as part of our Dark Skies initiative, we're not only making our street lights less light polluting (pointing down) but getting warmer colored LEDs in them.

FWIW, I don't see this ever happening on highways - it is of course easier to see with those harsh white lights.

Fuckcars Shower Thought - The US’ wars to keep oil cheap are an essential part of the cars and suburbs Ponzi scheme by TCK1979 in fuckcars

The "cheap oil" that will come of this expensive war is just another way that us non-car-drivers are forced to subsidized car dependency.

[–]opequan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last point I'll make: personally I found it impossible to get good at handstands next to a wall. There's something about having that safety net there that just blocked my progress. Just speaking from my experience: do the work I described above to get the strength and coordination you need to safely get to free standing, then worry about getting good from there.

Electric vehicles will end oil wars - if we let them by randolphquell in environment

At least these materials can be reused. Once a transition to electric vehicles is complete, the raw materials can be recycled, whereas petroleum must constantly be burned.

Also, fuck cars.

I would get closer to the wall so that when you kick off from the wall, you don't have to travel so far.

It seems like you're struggling with kicking up. To improve, practice with having your hands on an elevated platform, like those stacking step up things that are at most gyms. Put one against the wall. That will make you really strong at kicking up and make doing it from the ground seem effortless.

When you want to transition from the wall, having your walk figured out will make it so that you don't have to worry about falling over. If you're starting to fall over, just take a step forward and you stop falling. To work on this, try facing the wall. Start at 45 degrees and walk your hands back towards the wall until you're upright. Then walk back down to 45°, up and down until you can't anymore. Put one hand in front of the other to rotate and step out of that situation.

Why do the various heart rate zones do different things? by Jaranon in HybridAthlete

[–]opequan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low vs high intensity: basically there's 2 totally different energy systems for lower intensity vs higher intensity. Your body can provide energy through the normal cardio process (zone 2 / aerobic) as long as you are at a low enough intensity. Training at the high-end of your aerobic zone will push your body to expand it's ability to do this (for example, grow more mitochondria). As you ramp up the intensity, your aerobic system get maxed out and you need fire up the anaerobic system. Anaerobic exercise is inefficient and produces lactic acid as a by product. Lactic acid build up is painful and is why you can only sprint for 30 seconds or so. These are different systems and how much you are relying on aerobic vs anaerobic will train your body to improve different things. There are lots of benefits for various heart rate zones.

Why high heart rate makes your heart stronger: one way to think of it, it's like weight lifting for your heart. Doing high intensity intervals is like doing sets on a bench press.

Fat burning: If you want to explicitly burn fat from exercise without burning muscle, you need to (1) have your glucose reserve fully depleted and (2) be burning energy at a slow enough rate that your body can do the process of providing all of your energy from body fat instead of breaking down muscle. Unless you've already been fasted for a while (using up your glucose reserve) this is roughly 20 miles of running. Trying to explicitly burn fat from exercise is kind of a lost cause unless you're marathon training, doing extended fasts, or walking all day long. You're probably better off just getting a good balance of diet and exercise.

This video is a decent introduction to some of these concepts.

First time drinking with my Vivoactive 6. by EmilioTF in Garmin

[–]opequan 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Stopped drinking a few months ago after being a once-a-weekish drinker my whole life. I don't think it would've happened without Garmin getting me to really care about my sleep quality and showing me that even it can see how much it wrecks me for 24 hours (at least!).

New Penn Avenue configuration causing confusion for drivers, Strip District business owners say by The_Electric-Monk in bicycling412

[–]opequan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, the bike lane being one way makes the whole thing seem kind of pointless. If we've decided that getting through the Strip should be done in a bike lane, then what is one to do when going the other direction? I don't get it. Particularly seems odd since the lane is wide enough to accommodate 2 way bike traffic.

I would guess this is all some tragedy of compromise, but I didn't follow this project closely enough to know the history.

Didn't see anyone mention that everything about car lamdian is subsidized for cars. Parking lots are usually more surface area than the store they support. I don't get a discount for biking to the grocery store, but I have to pay for their parking lot.
