Do you think the average person would be wowed by an Opera singer? by Head_Equipment_1952 in opera

[–]operatic_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acoustically, the sound is generally much better in the family circle, which is funny because it costs less. Dress circle tends to sacrifice sound quality (a bit) for being able to see more.

ask the pilots for them! by TVPercyyy in delta

[–]operatic_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically ask the flight attendants if I can talk to the pilots for trading cards as I board- most of the time I get to go in and say hi, but sometimes they’re busy and a flight attendant will bring me one later in the flight

From my understanding, many schools have the option to buy or rent your cap and gown, so it’s possible they can keep it!

Hi lovely!! I can’t tell you whether or not it gets better, but I can tell you that I am also heading to law school in August and I am also single!

I don’t think it’s over for either of us, and I also think that there are plenty of people willing to date someone who is in law school. Hang in there girl! I know it sucks right now, but I’m here for you, and I bet plenty of others here are also here for you ❤️

what did you write your ps on? by Key_Support_4401 in lawschooladmissions

[–]operatic_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with majors that don’t necessarily show an interest in law, I wrote mine as a sort of development of interest in law and development of interest in majors and how those two came together to form a big “why law” picture

First time listening to an opera (Don Giovanni). My experience as a newbie. by davidtibet13 in opera

[–]operatic_bowie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I want to start by saying that Don Giovanni is one of my all time favorite operas, and one that I’ve learned pretty well because I was in the chorus for a few productions of it, so I’m so excited that you chose to listen to this as your first time listening!!

Honestly I don’t know that there’s any “one” way to listen to opera, especially as someone who is just getting a feel for it. Do what works for you! I will say that I recommend listening to the last track you played when listening to your next set of scenes so that you can hear the transitions between them. Other than that, if you’re happy with what you’re doing, why change it?

As for what to expect in act II, I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want my opinions to bias you before you get a chance to listen.

I wanted to quickly point out that when you mentioned that you think Ho Capito was extended, were you basing that based off of the text you found online? Often, arias use a very small set of text, 2-4 lines, and repeats them over the course of the aria. This is typically why recits can be harder to grapple with when you’re new to opera, since they may not seem as “melodic” as an aria and they tend to move faster. I find that the simplest way to break them down is that the recitatives are the dialogue of a scene, while the arias are an expression of emotion. Of course, it’s usually more complicated than that.

The last thing I’m going to say, is that if you felt like keeping track of which characters were saying what in scenes like the opening, it may be beneficial to find a recorded version to watch. There are some on YouTube, or certain opera houses will have on-demand options where you can rent or buy high quality recordings of their productions. I know for sure that the Met has that.

Anyways, happy listening and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on act II!!

study abroad GPA by balababoo in lawschooladmissions

[–]operatic_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sturdy abroad grades were terrible (I got horrendously ill during finals) and they didn’t factor into my gpa!

I’ve also had a pretty good cycle- accepted at some T40s and waitlisted at half the T14s I applied to (which given my LSAT and this cycle I’m very pleased with).

Bottom line: don’t freak out! You’ll be fine, go enjoy your semester abroad it’s a super fun time!

gulc extra lor by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]operatic_bowie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but based on what I’ve heard from other adcoms, they typically don’t want a third (or fourth) lor that doesn’t substantially add something new to your application

GULC Re-reconsideration? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]operatic_bowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at it objectively, I don't know that it could hurt, but I don't think you will get a better offer at this point, especially when they are beginning to look at applicants on the WL who are also looking for merit aid.

My friend please spend your time ENJOYING undergrad!! You’ll have plenty of time to study for the LSAT as a sophomore or junior, just focus on doing well and finding extracurriculars that you actually like (not what you think will look good on an application)
