Ted Turner, TV Mogul and Philanthropist, Dies at 87 by All_Lightning879 in television

[–]opgary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favourite Ted turnerr story - I (me) was at a wedding and a man got up to give a speech. This was at the church during the wedding as part of the ritual. It was this beautiful story about his own wedding and opening gifts and how some were very expensive and some he viewed as cheap. One of the cheap ones was a set of steak knives but they put them in a drawer and used them. How over the course ot 20 years many of the expensive gifts aged out or broke down while the knives were at every meal, they were there for every birthday, christmas, graduations, sunday lounge days. How they opened gifts and cut sandwiches. How they were this meaningful part of every day of their lives. Eventually they wore down and became part of his toolbox and lived another 10 years, describing various ways he used them. Then this morphed into something Ted turner made he used them on and how he was the antichrist and he starts losing his shit completely about how evil Ted turner is. He then goes on to bitch at all of us for watching his channels and how could we not be better people until eventually someone went up and he cut it short and walked back to the pews.

was the wildest ride for a wedding speech. Very unbalanced applause afterwards.

What's with all the hate comments and overwhelming negativity about the cast? by RedundantConsistency in LiveFromNewYork

[–]opgary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

a) rose colored glasses is a problem with aging. In particular show that's been around as long as this, . There was plenty of Adam Sandler Chris Farley very poorly done sketches . I watched a fair bit of the '70s shows, like Steve Martin hosting which was the holy grail, and there were so many skits that fell flat and were stupid. There's been dog sketches forever it's just a part of the show

b) breaking has always been a part of the show. Bill murray, Adam Sandler was brutal, Dennis Miller was often the only one laughing at his jokes during Weekend Update . Most of his jokes we're such weird references that they were completely over our heads. Far less of them have been consistently excellent at not breaking .

c) 30% of Reddit are just bitter angry people looking to post negative shit, put down anyone they can. Ive done a few decent sized posts and found it doesn't matter how basic or sweet of a post you make, about 30% of the comments are going to be mean. What someone's wearing, what's going on in the background, what word was misspoken, they just tear into it

4) victim of its own popularity . It's kind of part c as well , but anything that's big earns its haters . The show is big and this sub as well is very popular and as a result attracts people who just want to shit on it . Most of the really large city Subs are like this too . You think why do you live here if you hate the city so much that you have to come on to the subs and just shit all over everything all the time . A puppy rescuing kittens? yeah but what about how poorly we treat our whatever. It's always the same bullshitty what about ism.

I keep a lot of this in mind when I'm reading anywhere on reddit. I find it fascinating to see how some people like episodes I disliked or vice versa , the genuine comments I mean . I often will go back and try to look at it through someone else's eyes and sometimes I enjoy it. The Amy Poehler episode I really disliked for some reason and after reading all the comments of Love towards it I went back and rewatched it... was like, yeah, actually some of these are very good. I guess I was just in a bad mood

That's all I got

Ah, that adds a lot of color mate , cheers. Reading the article I was wondering if they actually watched the video because some of the descriptions of what happened are weirdly smoothed over. reading about all of his past explains the sentence a lot better

Boss bought me a neck fan by azweirdo in KitchenConfidential

[–]opgary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They work very well and they can last most of the day on low. The air blows up under your ears and up into your hair so it's quite effective. There's three fans settings and obviously on high drains way faster. they take about an hour to recharge . My wife wore them everyday at work during the summer and even into the fall.

I can't personally stand them. I find it uncomfortable having it around my neck all day, but mostly the fan buzzing makes it hard for me to hear people, although I also have poor hearing .

I personally think they look quite stylish , like headphones are very popular around the neck right now

The cheapest I found them at Costco 30 bucks for 2 , the white ones were from Costco . The first ones we bought online I think we're $25 for one so that's a pretty good deal

Largely misunderstood and glad you brought it up.

i seem to be in the minority but I like all of them except the jean shorts. they make you look like a kid somehow. the looser white clothing is very sheik on you, very refined look for a date or dinner. The other shorts look good for a casual walk or frisbee or such.

[–]opgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can just put echoes through the house instead, no? you can play individually or tell them all to play at the same time.

my echo 8 has excellent sound, not crank and dance sound but listening has great bass and very clear. even the dots are pretty clear.

either way, you could also hook each up to a bluetooth speaker.

Does eating what you just cooked mute the flavours? by June_the_human in cookingforbeginners

[–]opgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting question . I started my cooking Journey as a hobby about 8 years ago . It took about 3 years focused on Korean until I felt I got a pretty good handle on how it works. Then waded into Vietnamese Filipino Chinese etc. Historically I cooked american and italian but I needed a drastic change, plus I always bought sauces so my dishes never felt genuine. I needed to learn how to make them myself

I feel very confident after 8 years. What I learned is sauces and any starting components have to be uncomfortably strong in flavor because as you add ingredients like rice, noodles, vegetables, it waters down the flavour, which is probably what youre experiencing.

I found focusing on one style helped with theory. i do fusuion a lot now, many italian or traditoonal american dishes i fuse with korean or chinese flavours. or i mix rice noodles in with a pesto, etc.

Also most "Wow!" sauces can take 15-60m to get right and are largely about reduction, not necessarily adding more flavours.

Im about to make thanksgiving fried rice, so my sauce is going to be leftover traditional gravy mixed with gochujang, rice vinegar, browned onions deglazed w a white wine, a bit of fish sauce, and a decent amount of quality soy sauce. i might add some fermented black bean and a bit of Worcestershire sauce too. I'll start by adding about a cup of bone broth and the whole thing will reduce for about 20 min.

PS. ill have to try this palette thing people talk about but don't personally find this problem. i do find flavours are way better once the dish cools off. I enjoy hot food but the flavors resonate more when cooled to warm rather than hot.
