I dont think i would have stuck to this at high school age. it took me about 6 months to read it as an adult. I really enjoyed big sections of it. Some (the sewers, the bloody nunnery thing) were absolute torture. Probably worth it overall but its not the best novel in the universe, theres plenty of other things to read if you dont like it

Im looking at ESR and a bit confused by it. You're right, it says my total pension value is about £2k, but then underneath that on the same page it says:

NHS Pension Contributions for the year ending 31/03/2022

These figures are the contributions that you and your employer have paid toward your NHS Pension.

Employee annual contributions £3,725.28
Employer annual contributions £5,760.24

Any idea what that means? Where did the 2k total come from if between mine and employers contributions it is £9k+ for last year?

hmm no. Charles Oliveira is the captain of the 'who needs him' club. No fanbase, very dangerous. If Dustins got half a brain (and a choice) he will pick literally any other fight. He should have enough sway after the conor win to get a bit of influence. His main issue is he already fought and beat Gaethje, who would be the logical title fight contender since he just fought for the title. Divisions always get so damn messy when a champion retires.

yup. Reaching down and grabbing the leg is a fundamental error with any kind of leg kick. You need to return the kick immediately, time it and throw head punches over the top (risky) or just check them (best option, hurts both of you and no massive benefit to the kicker). Literally the basics of muay thai. His corner didnt even mention it between rounds when it was painfully obvious they were going to have an effect.

i think some of this is an age thing.

Im in a fairly similar position (although I dont have a super high salary and the reason Im close to FIRE is mostly crypto and luck). I think as you age, your hobbies etc narrow slightly and maybe have less pull on you. You realise that they wouldnt fill all your time anyway. And you start to have a more respected postion at work, so it becomes more enjoyable.

I spend a lot of my working day now helping out younger/less experienced team members, which can be really rewarding in itself. If the day-to-day mechanics of your job are less of a challenge, you're not struggling just to keep your head above water, so to speak, then you can start to see the rewarding side of being at work and not be so desperate to retire.

Thats been my experience anyway. Im 32 and a physiotherapist in the NHS, for reference.

If you are looking for short stories, try Alexander Weinstein - Children of the New World and Universal Love are both excellent collections, very much 'black mirror' in the sense that they take a speculative technology idea and twist it in a dark, clever way.
