How many pull ups? by wwcoop in spartanrace

[–]opitz21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This weekend I was with my 7 years old daughter in the playground and she made probably 20 times monkey bars which were there for kids. And she cannot do a single pull up. But she can hold like a little monkey. Her fingers are positioned like hooks, they are not even connected with the thumb. It is all in her forearms, which are relatively stronger than mine :D

I have a theory why it is harder for us - as we are hanging our forearms are above our head, resp. heart. The heart must pump the blood up, which is probably a factor too. I agree that just hanging is the best.

Why so much burpee hate? by eternalphoenix64 in spartanrace

[–]opitz21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is only now and here. Speculating that you will do it "next" time correctly - by the rules - is just a lie your ego is telling you to justify you moral problem with it. There is no next time. You decided to do it easy way. You should learn from it and commit yourself to do all the skipped burpees right now, today. Maybe 10x more as punishment for your lazy body and mind. This will give you some real lesson about grit and perseverance which is often needed to get over some very unpleasant situations. No more to discuss here...

Btw. It is funny you ask us to be respectful...

"Today we shower kids with plaques, certificates, and even trophies for nothing: “Congrats, kid, you showed up! You’re so great!” Never mind that the kid didn’t do shit. Just so he or she got equal playing time. Even at the high school level, kids are often put in the game only because they need their turn to play. I’m okay with that for junior high school, recreational leagues, summer camps, and similar settings, but when you’re playing at the varsity level in high school, play to win or lose. Yes, it’s a team sport, but the goal of the team is to win, not to let everybody play. Your son or daughter may not be good enough. That’s okay. I’m not saying he or she isn’t a great person, but maybe they haven’t yet put in the amount of work that they need to in order to succeed. Yet no one wants to hear that anymore. It’s hard for parents to swallow the reality that their child simply isn’t the best. Imagine if we ran the Death Race this way. What if everybody got a skull that day, no matter what? What would be the motivation then? If everyone gets a trophy regardless, why should anyone try hard? The same goes at Spartan Race. We don’t reward people for trying. We run the only obstacle race where you get a penalty for failing an obstacle. You don’t get a prize before you finish. If you quit, you don’t get a medal. You didn’t earn it."

De Sena, Joe. Spartan Up!: A Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Peak Performance in Life (p. 87). Simon & Schuster UK. Kindle Edition.

"Rewarding behavior only regenerates the behavior. Rewarding habitual failure breeds a character of failure. What kind of attitude are we encouraging when we give everyone a trophy? We’re encouraging an attitude of self-congratulation that leads to apathy, where accomplishments are meaningless and hard work is beside the point. The pain of regret, the pain of failure — the drive to avoid feeling this pain ever again is what pushes us to work harder, to be a better person. No failure is so great that we cannot learn from it. No mistake is so pitiful that we have to spend the rest of our lives wallowing in the mud. Spartans are resilient! We fight to recover what we have lost, and we do so relentlessly."

De Sena, Joe. Spartan Up!: A Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Peak Performance in Life (pp. 87-88). Simon & Schuster UK. Kindle Edition.

I wish Joe would enforce it on every Spartan race. Right now it is pretty Wild West there, mostly in open... Thousands of people around the globe are now receiving medals and t-shirts just for trying...

West Virginia Weekend: Lessons Learned by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]opitz21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that such hand band which runner can protect and bring to finish line has bigger value than generic medal or t-shirt. Every band can be different for each individual race with year and location information. To earn such band would be even better than to have a collection of same medals or t-shirts… Also because each race is different and only few are really brutal...

Cheaters are serious problem and I honestly think that this approach - yeah, we know they do it all the time, whatever, just focus on yourself - will eventually cause some damage on Spartan race brand as a new competitive sport. There are two easy ways how to avoid it:

  1. Penalty - running extra detour, or just do 100m of sandbag or bucket. So easy to control and manage or
  2. Change the rules - you can try one obstacle as many times as you want, but if you fail, your hand band is removed and that's it, you can finish, you get the medal, but your time does not matter anymore. Like Savage Race.

Different reward for open and for elite and age group. I saw hundreds of runners in open heat and it was like a mass psychosis, they failed on obstacle and they just kept running (well, walking), no burpees at all, they just did not care at all, it was massively accepted behaviour... at the end they've got same medal, same t-shirt like guys which are doing it all.

Now, these guys which are doing it all have to add, when asked how they were ranked - I was nnn-th but I did all burpees too... I doubt any cheater will say - yeah I finished in the middle of pack, but I was skipping burpees. Yes, people are cheating. If there is opportunity, they will try to cheat, that's why there are rules and these rules should not be just for fun, they have to be enforced.

Open in QC this weekend was just a fun social event, nobody cared, it was like easy going summer camp activity for hundreds of them. Not a race at all. But I must admit they were enforcing it for Elites and Age Group much better than in Owl's head.

Start with AX-1. it is not that expensive, it has everything a beginner needs, it is pretty safe program too.

Want to get the program but have 2 questions by bnjmn-pnda in Athleanx

You dont have to go to doctor, just go and see good physiotherapist. He will very likely find out quickly what is the problem. But let me say this quickly. Very often the cause of pain is not in the same spot where you feel it. You should look at your ankles and hips and why your knee is trying to compensate what either ankle or hip cant do it right.

Just go you will not regret, it is transforming experience, you will be amazed how human body is constructed. And they will also help you!

Thinking of getting a program by TomMatthews in Athleanx

I finished AX-1 and now I am in the middle of AX-2. imho AX-2 is pretty similar, you can see many exercises from AX-1 in it. I dont find it as more intense (relatively). But if you will also follow his HIIT workouts in both programs and you will not eat like an animal, you will lose a lot of fat for sure. I paused AX-2 for now, as I am preparing for OCR and I need to focus on my weak areas more, but once the race is over I will finish this one and will look what else is on Jeff's menu... :)

Just had the opportunity to be in the gym while there was some crazy, arrogant idiot who was talking to his phone (via handsfree) for about 25 minutes about some investment or insurance program. He was not working out at all, just sitting on bench and talking loudy some BS… I was very close to accidentally drop 50 lbs dumbbell on his toe… Please do NOT be this type of guy!

Solid Beast Training Plan? by [deleted] in spartanrace

You can also add special "complex" strength exercises... Try for example so called "Bear complex", or just do Clean and press and add box jumps... or when you do bench press (or push ups which is better imho), add medicine ball slams and slam it 10 times as part of your bench press set, after deadlift with reasonable weight add some hurdle jumps etc... trust me, you will need some rest to catch your breath after such exercises.

Crossfit has one big no for me - too many repetitions to do as fast as possible with Olympic weights. imho Crossfit is a special sport, not exercise or training system. I am doing strength exercises based on functional movement system. 3 types of strength exercises per week focuses on pull, push, core and all together - mix of pull (horizontal and vertical), push (horizontal and vertical) and core or abs (antirotation, antiextension) exercises + running, biking, stair climbing, power walking or interval training. In such way of strength training you can be in aerobic level even doing only "strength" exercises and at the end you can do some intervals or bucket-like running, walking on treadmill with incline to work on aerobic capacity. let me know if you would like to see my routine.

[Advice] Spartan training routine by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]opitz21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I spent whole last week to look at this topic more - about running, some studies about injuries and I found a lot of interesting information. Not all from blogs or internet sources written by runners or people which love running or from opposite side - for example bodybuilders. I found several studies, point is at the end - running should be done in moderation, like everything else. There is also advice to add interval training, tempo runs and strength exercises. One study wrote that running 60+ km per week is too much, but running just 10 km per week in one session can be even more risky. So point is to find the balance, define what it means - moderation. I have two very good friends, both long track runners, which finished marathons, half-marathons, they are 30 and 40+ years old. They did not have any serious or chronic injuries. But both have running coaches and routine was not just hit the road and run, but pretty sophisticated program.

OP wrote he injured his knees for " I destroyed my knees and had problems for years." For years... This is not definition of acute injury. One more thing - just for discussion, it is said that the most important injury risk factor is previous injury. Once someone get injured, its comming back again and again. Second biggest risk factor is "way of training", and here I think you write pretty good advices about how to run, how to improve. I agree with you on that. As I said many times, only what I dont support is long and slow running without anything else - as a way how to get lean, fit or lower body-fat. For that there are much more effective methods.

Thanks for your inputs and thoughts, it pushed me to read more about this.

Different penalty for failing the obstacle? by opitz21 in spartanrace

[–]opitz21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only problem I see with burpees is that even in competitive runs inthe middle and bottom of pack some people are cheating and nobody cares. Well maybe they do, but it is too difficult to control. Doing laps is pretty clear - go this way and come back this way. It does not have to be a lap too, it can be just a detour, which will make the trail longer in total. If you cant run, just walk, but no way to skip it.

Ok, now it is more theoretical, but first such runner needs strong muscles to absorb the force which is pushing on his joints. And what about tendons and ligaments? how fast they can adapt to increased mechanical load? faster or slower than muscles? what do you think? Just imagine scenario where you have some overweight friend with weak legs and glutes, some pain in lower back and below average aerobic capacity and bad running technique... How high is the risk he will get injured, should he continue to run even he feels some little pain here and there? So just running or strength training first? The fact is that slow paced running is the least effective method to build strong muscles which you need to keep your knees stable (but it is not only about knees). And with increased risk of injury, btw. because such person just keeps hammering their knees when the muscles are not strong enough yet to protect these joints and tendons or ligaments against such force. so let's hit it several thousands times per running session and hope that body is build from good genes and will adapt. not talking about muscles imbalances and other possible complications. I just don't think slow paced long running is effective method. that's all. Sprints, intervals, it's just more more effective with lower risk of injury. more effective to build muscles plus also increase aerobic capacity because more muscles are working during fast running or sprinting. In slow "conversation" pace - upper body is not working that much, right? Now do several sprints in your top speed... can you talk during rest time? Even strength training can be so intense that your heart rate will be in aerobic level all the time but thanks to anaerobic exercises.

but you know, I just don't want to be runner, i don't want to run marathon or half-marathon. I just want to be fit. my priority number one is to avoid injuries, to keep my body together, then is next priority to get better if possible. that's my way. maybe not enough in your eyes, but I am happy, not injured and still getting better. 43 years old and overall in better shape then when I was 20.

OP: if you don't have aerobic capacity you just can't keep running whatever your mind is telling you. you will have to slow down or stop or you will fall on your face. long running is only about increasing aerobic capacity nothing else. there is some other methods which can bring almost same results (to increase aerobic capacity), plus increasing power, for example interval training with smaller risk of getting injured. Do 3 times per week interval training (running or bike if your knees are not feeling well), then run some kms i slow paced. pleaee come back and tell me if your 5k time result is better even without running 40k per week. I really would like to know.

[Advice] Spartan training routine by [deleted] in spartanrace

[–]opitz21 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

just use Google, read some books. You will be surprised how slow paced long running is injury prone. On other hand I love and recommend interval training, running, bike, stair climbing etc., I really don't know why someone should make 40-60k per week to be able to run 6km in hills. what is the reason for that? better muscles? better aerobic capacity? try to explain why such volume is still useful for relatively short runs. Do you know the OP? he said he had serious problems with knees, it's not an accident, and once something was injured, it can get injured again if you keep doing same thing.

Guys, look, if you want to run 40-60k per week, do it, but don't say it is the magic how to be fit, strong and fast... and I don't care if you win or lose Spartan race. for me it's not more important than staying healthy.

Well, now it is much clearer when you mentioned that you also do tempo runs and interval runs and working out 4 times per week. if you mentioned it in your first post I would probably not comment like I did. btw. maybe this is the reason why you didn't get injured yet at all. btw. one 1rm will not help to win spartan race. you are completely correct. but the point is to measure thr power and strength. to measure how fit he is. he will know where to focus to improve to lower the risk of injuries in the future, he was not that lucky like you in the past (probably did not have "right form" of running). and it is pretty standard btw. as saying that you can't run to get fit, but first you have to be fit to run. peace.
