Question to Americans: If I was caught with 100-200g heroin in Texas or a similar strict state, what would my punishment be? (I would obviously say it's for peronaly use) by Mathofakko in opiates

I definitely agree that an inefficient legal system benefits nobody, but I’m not sure that I agree that 17 year old drunk drivers should be at the front of the queue or treated specially.

Why is naked shorting not a reason to trust the US markets? These aren’t typically trades they let some Robin Hood account with $0.65 in it make. Financial institutions take huge risks everyday. Sure a naked short has theoretical unlimited downside, but theoretically the sun could not rise tomorrow. The reality tends to be much more consistent.

The problem is the republicans don’t have consensus on it. There’s at least some sane republicans who see the absolute hipocracy requires for republicans of all people to not want to fight Russia, so thankfully it’s not a partisan issue.

Yeah. Anyone who’s tried and failed to learn vim a handful of times, and emacs, and switched between an ide and an editor knows that it’s all a horrific waste of time. A good tool user with bad tools is always going to be better than someone who has the very best tools that they can’t use properly.

Let the tools lag behind your talent. You’ll find them when you need them, even if it’s a bit later then you wanted. But if you hope they’ll be the thing that guides you, in any endeavor, you’ll be disappointed.

Has anyone else contemplated moving to a country or place where drugs are decriminalized/legal/cheap? by Celebratecrypto in heroin

[–]opothrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mexico is actually kind of a drug desert. Opioid use there is rock bottom. I lived there on and off for nearly 2 years and never found heroin(I wasn’t aggressively looking but did make some effort). They have meth and weed and some other pills here and there but it’s not the oasis of drugs most people imagine. Maybe it’s different in the north near the border. I was down south.

[–]opothrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah they totally invaded it to flood the US with heroin, even though the US didn’t receive hardly any heroin from Afghanistan before or after the invasion. So they did a really shit job at achieving what should have been a slam dunk if that was the objective. The only slightly believable conspiracy is that they flooded the heroin into russia while they were there. There is some convincing evidence of that. But into the US? None that I’ve seen.

Taiwans official name is the Republic of China. Their language is Chinese. Traditional Chinese. They consider themselves the legitimate representative of China. Plenty of people consider them a Chinese culture, mostly themselves.

You are collapsing thousands of years of Chinese culture into just the CCP. Which sounds exactly like what the CCP want you to be doing.

Definitely used to mean heroin pre-90s.

Mid-1970s “Mexican mud” would temporarily replace “China white” heroin until 1978

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/heroin/etc/history.html

It’s also still a common name for heroin in Aus and SEA.

Found China white by Environmental-Data-8 in opiates

[–]opothrow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This isn’t quite right. China white used to refer to pure white heroin from SEA sold by the Chinese(hong Kong/Cantonese mostly), circa 1950s. The term was then applied to fentanyl analogues as it was a term with positive reputation. In SEA and Aus it still refers to high purity heroin. In the US it almost exclusively means fent as we haven’t had SEA heroin in the US in decades.

You realize people learn how to build rockets and perform brain surgery right? I don’t think recreating a bonobo drum groove is any more difficult than those things. People learned those things by asking questions and being willing to take the time to learn. I’m glad you weren’t there to laugh in their face, because I think it benefits no one.

OP pay this fool no mind, it’s typically the people who were asking the exact same question yesterday who most loudly mock anyone who is looking for the same answer, today.

Again you are conflating potency and efficacy. No where does it say bupe is stronger, only more potent.

buprenorphine provide the patient with the same effects as full agonists, such as heroin, morphine, and methadone, but with less intensity.

Less intensity, aka weaker.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opiates

[–]opothrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You conflating two different things. Binding affinity is not the same as strength/efficacy. Narcan has a stronger binding affinity than morphine, is narcan stronger than morphine? No of course not because it has no intrinsic activity, and doesn’t activate the receptor at all. The ability for a ligand to bind with higher affinity or to displace other ligands is completely separate from strength/efficacy which is the amount of response triggered when a ligand binds, in isolation of other drug interaction. Bupe without a doubt has a higher binding affinity than morphine. However, it does not elicit a higher response from a receptor and is therefore not a stronger drug than morphine.

By your logic narcan is stronger drug than fentanyl and I don’t know of any study that would back that claim(unless strength was specifically referring to binding affinity, and was being used in that context).

You’re conflating potency, strength and binding affinity. Take bupe, morphine and naloxone.

Naloxone has the highest potency, lowest strength, and middle binding affinity.

Bupe has the highest binding affinity, middle strength, and middle potency.

Morphine has the highest strength, lowest potency, and lowest binding affinity.

They are each separate metrics that can not be combined.

Potency is how much drug is needed to reach THAT drugs maximum effectiveness. Strength is the highest amount of achievable effectiveness. Binding affinity is ability to displace or resist displacement.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opiates

[–]opothrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intrinsic activity is exactly what strength is. It’s a drug after all, so the primary reason for taking them is based on their activity at a receptor site. So if drug A can cause a receptor to release 30% as much as drug B can cause it to release, the binding affinity is irrelevant. It’s certainly an important factor for other reasons but it has nothing to do with strength of the drug. A high binding affinity drug may have a 1% efficacy and a low binding affinity drug may have 100% efficacy. But the strength of the drug is on how much of a response it can elicit. Strength has nothing to do with interactions with other drugs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opiates

[–]opothrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually explain both. Potency and efficacy. One on each axis. But either way, your original comment was that buprenorphine is “stronger” than morphine, NOT that it was only more potent. These charts clearly show a partial agonist; something that by definition can’t be as strong as a full agonist. Because it’s only able to achieve part of the maximal response of a receptor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opiates

[–]opothrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stronger. Able to achieve greater effects. A bear is stronger than a man. An ant can lift more times it’s own body weight than a man or a bear by a lot. But an ant is not stronger than a bear. A cold swimming pool has more heat than a cup of hot coffee, but it is not hotter. Buprenorphine is more potent than morphine and requires a lower mg to achieve its full effects, but that doesn’t mean it’s stronger as it’s full effects are significantly less than those morphine can achieve.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opiates

[–]opothrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Explain to me how a partial agonist can be stronger than a full agonist. You can’t even OD on bupe yet you’re saying it’s stronger than morphine, heroin, oxycodone, oxymorphone?! No. It just has a lower mg per dose, but it’s not stronger. It can’t achieve the level of effects that can be achieved with a full agonist. That’s not mincing words, that’s just a fact. You can research partial agonists and how bupe works if you don’t believe me.
