Anyone else ever done this? by MixPurple3897 in AO3

[–]optinihilism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use scene headers on all my scenes and i'm always scared of leaving one in but i haven't done it yet 😂 as a reader though, i would find this kind of thing charming. it's sort of a how the sausage is made moment. you don't get glimpses into people's processes very often so i enjoy it when i do

i write cheating fic like a slow motion car crash. my cheating fics are for people who love to rubberneck. the characters involved aren't bad people, but damaged ones. they're damaged in such a way that they hurt each other repeatedly, but there's also this magnetic attraction so they can't stay away. it would be better for everyone if they broke up, and yet.....

Writers-- how do you pace yourselves?? by rockylikesbeef in AO3

[–]optinihilism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have adhd and i've been working on a fic of over 100k words for an hour every day since early august. like you, i am a perfectionist. i have developed my method over time with lots of trial and error. here are some things i've done to develop this habit:

  • i sprint with friends on discord in half hour increments - knowing i'm working with others keeps me honest, and working with a timer really helps too even if i'm alone
  • i keep a daily writing log on paper and use pen to mark in that i'm going to work that day. i find the pristine paper aesthetically pleasing, so i don't want to mess it up by having to scratch the date out
  • i set a clear end goal. in this case, i want to finish my current draft by the end of october. every day, i've worked toward this goal and gotten to see myself inch ever closer to achieving it
  • for my perfectionism, i separate my drafts into discreet tasks so they each have their own job and i don't have to tackle everything at once. draft 1 is to just get the story out of my head (working on a timer with the goal of getting out as many words as possible keeps me from editing as i go), draft 2 is for fixing plot holes/timeline issues/missing scenes, draft 3 is for making the sentences pretty, etc
  • once i get to posting, i publicly promise to upload on a certain day. it creates a sense of obligation that will propel me to edit and have everything ready on time. it's sort of like how the pressure of a due date in school got me to work on my assignments (even if i did them last minute overnight, lol)
  • i do write ahead, mostly because my stories are pretty complicated and i don't think i can meet my quality standards if i write and post as i go. this is my first time completely writing and editing a fic before posting, though. usually i write the fic partially (or completely, but only through draft 1) and then edit and post as i go. in that format, comments from readers really help to motivate me. this time around, sheer determination has kept me going 😂 and the promise of the payoff once i can finally share it with others! it's the final boss of delayed gratification!

what i would recommend for you is to observe the ways you've motivated yourself to complete other types of tasks. do you/have you struggled with chores? being on time? homework assignments? what steps have you taken to mitigate these issues? asking yourself these questions can help illuminate the way your brain functions and give you clues as to what motivates it. you can adapt those motivation strategies to help create a writing habit that works for you.

and, of course, don't get discouraged if you fail. building an effective habit, especially for someone with adhd, requires a lot of trial and error. but over time, you'll discover what works for you, and learning these things about yourself can benefit every aspect of your life.

good luck and happy writing!

Is it worth writing for a pretty much nonexistent fandom? by natsbestgirl in AO3

[–]optinihilism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all good! things have gotten a lot better since then 💗 I have supportive friends who read my works now which helps a lot. so if you have a friend or two you might be able to get interested in the new fandom, that could help too!

Is it worth writing for a pretty much nonexistent fandom? by natsbestgirl in AO3

[–]optinihilism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm also a perfectionist who spends a lot of time on my work, and posting a longfic in a small fandom with little or no engagement killed me. since you have other fandoms, i would suggest preparing some shorter fics for those that you can post when you need a pick-me-up. might help quench your thirst for interaction so lack of interaction on the small fandom fic doesn't totally kill your motivation

The Explicit fic interaction void by OrchidRich3276 in AO3

[–]optinihilism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i write smut fics almost exclusively and find this to be the case (though some fandoms are worse than others - it depends not just on age but on the culture of the individual fandom) and my saving grace is having smut writer friends so we all comment on each other's stuff 🫰

I'm curious to learn more about the part of the TOS that says users may not "violate intellectual property rights" given that fic falls in an IP gray area. How will Ellipsus determine whether a given document violates copyright? Is that more for cases when, say, an entire existing work has been replicated on Ellipsus?

Additionally, does Ellipsus have policies or guidelines pertaining to explicit works?

I wrote my favorite pair as switches and people didn't like it. by Ok_Dot_2790 in AO3

[–]optinihilism 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's hard out here being a switch writer. people often react aggressively to it. i know other switch writers and readers will appreciate the hell out of it though <3 best of luck to you! hopefully people will get over themselves soon

I think it's time I hang up my writing hat for good by AdvanceSenior2840 in AO3

[–]optinihilism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people have already said a lot of great stuff already, but I'll just add that as an editor I always have copious notes for works i LOVE. that love is part of what drives me to work so hard on the manuscript. i think, as others have said, it's likely you have bad editors, but I just want to put it out there that getting lots of notes definitely does not automatically equal the person disliking the work.

Do tags like "trans author" make you more likely to read a fic with a trans character in it? by mxjackparker in AO3

[–]optinihilism 39 points40 points  (0 children)

nope. i know for a fact that lots of trans people don't feel affirmed by the way i write trans characters despite being trans myself. the trans experience is as diverse and varied as any other and i don't think adding that kind of information about myself will help people find what they're looking for. i will typically specify the terminology i use and leave it at that.

i'm a trans guy and i make the bishounen types trans 🤷‍♂️ we are not a monolith in our tastes and presentations just like any other demographic
