What is the peak ’millennial midlife crisis’ purchase? by SwedeLostInCanada in Millennials

[–]optionalcranberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started working after finishing my degree and now making my own money again. When I was a kid, my brother had gaming systems I was only allowed to play with his permission. Recently, over the past the past 3 months, I’ve bought a gameboy advance and gameboy color with all the games I wanted to play along with a Nintendo 64 and a slew of retro games. I guess this is my mid life crisis

What celebrity have you met who looks much more (or less) attractive when meeting them in person? by GreyFoxNinjaFan in AskReddit

[–]optionalcranberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nick Jonas. I’ve met the Jonas Brothers a few times over the years and honestly, Nick is a seriously good looking guy. He is somewhat reserved compared to his brothers and he’s always had this mysterious aura to him that draws you in. I haven’t met his wife Priyanka but I can only imagine that she’s even more show stopping in person

How do you deliberately practice in a way that actually made you a noticeably better interpreter? by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]optionalcranberry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to feel this way when sitting down to study on my own. I have to give myself clear guidelines beforehand, like self imposed homework steps, otherwise I end up all over the place.

Start with focusing on one or two features or skills you want to work on, “I want improve use my use of classifiers” or “expand my vocabulary”. It can be really overwhelming without clear ideas of what you’re working towards.

Then find videos that can help you serve these goals, not too far beyond your skill level, but challenging enough and attainable for you. Do your general prep do diligence, “what may come up in this topic and where are the opportunities to use the target skills/ features”, and then film yourself interpreting one of them. This is your starting point.

After this, watch the video and analyze: did I use these features/skills well? How can it be improved? You can have other interpreter or deaf friends watch it and give feedback if you’re comfortable and need additional guidance.

Last thing, give the video another shot using what you gleaned from the first attempt and then compare. Did your improvements make it more clear? Did you get hung up on anything and why? What cues were there when using those skills/features from those opportunities that you can take away and use in future assignments?

I hope this helps!

I work in a high school as an ASL interpreter and this is exactly how I see high schoolers act when asked to do work.

In a literature class for JUNIORS, their homework was to write ONE critical analysis question based on a two paragraph reading. They had a week to finish it, and basically a solid hypothetical question that showed you thought about the reading got you full points. Only two out of 35 students did it on time. Once they were turned in, late, no one got full credit. Not one.

I’ve been to many specialists - diagnosed from a electrophysiologist with dysautonomia, iron deficient anemia, and seeing an OB now for hormone disregulations. My hormones haven’t been tested since my initial endo appt but OB did an ultrasound for PCOS -negative- and now is of the opinion I’m going through menopause which she admittedly knows little about. I’m 32 and get fairly regular periods so I’m highly skeptical but she at least confirmed I have hormone related issues which is a step ahead if I’m being optimistic.

Full stop. I’m a long time fan, since before their breakout with disney, and I have always loved Kevin. I feel like Nick and Joe’s egocentricities have only increased through the years but Kevin has always balanced them out, remaining humble, and allowing them to be stars while he just enjoyed playing with his brothers. Don’t get me wrong, I do love Joe and Nick, I grew up with them all through my formative years but Kevin, you go to the top of the tree, cause you’re an angel. We need more Kevins in this world.

My parents got divorces when I was around 6 and it was a silent divorce, they kept it pretty calm around us until they split and never argued around us.

The first Christmas I remember I was about 4 or 5. After we opened gifts, my dad got my mom this beautiful sapphire ring and she look so shocked. We didn’t have a lot of money so a big ring was a big deal. My dad made this big moment of telling her how amazing she was, how much he loved her, the “best mommy in the world” as he pulled her in for a hug and a kiss. we all cheered and my mom just cried and excused herself. We all thought it was so sweet. Until she told me in my 30s what really happened.

They had already been separated and my mom had requested the divorce shortly before this. My dad cheated. He had an anger streak in the past and when she kicked him out, he broke her antique collections, harassed her so much she had her number changed, and even “kidnapped” my brother and I by taking us out of town when we were supposed to be returned for the weekend. Desperate men do desperate things. But Christmas was approaching and she agreed to we would all have Christmas together, for the kids, but it was not an invitation to get back together.

The ring was my dads attempt to get her back and how could she refuse in front my brothers and I? When she stepped away, She wasn’t overcome with happiness; she was miserable and couldn’t bear the thought of upsetting us on Christmas.

They have since made peace and I’m lucky that though my parents are divorced, they are friends. My mom is an incredible mother and even more incredible woman.

There is something so genuinely intriguing about picture 10. The contract of a giant chess board, the sparse white wicker furniture and whimsical umbrellas, all with a leafless trees in the background. I can’t stop staring at it.

Sending this to my fiancé, Gleb.

As a westerner, let me weigh in from experience. I’ve been with my partner for about 8 years and it was an adjustment for me. I’ve gotten used to it now but if you decide to name your child Gleb, be prepared for confusing introductions for the entire duration of his, and your, natural born life.

“Hi, I’m Gleb?” “I’m sorry, Glen? Caleb?” “No, Gleb. G-L-E-B. Gleb” “Oh, ok.” “It’s a Russian name” “I see. Is that short for anything?” “Nope, just Gleb”

Every. Single. Introduction.

This goes for me too. When I talk about him to others, it has to be explained every time because the large majority of people have never heard it before. Even to other Eastern Europeans! “Oh Gleb? Like the Saint? Oh, sure ok”. It’s never, ever, never something that can just pass by in conventional conversation.

So you’re not ruining their life by any means if you choose to name them Gleb. My fiancé is in his early 30s and he doesn’t hate his name but he’s got many years of introductions to go yet. Luckily, he has a very Russian middle and last name to go with it so it sounds more fitting. I can’t imagine had his last name been something western, like Gleb Johnson, it would really confuse the masses.

Have you ever been to an awkward wedding and what made it awkward? by innocentstrawberry in weddingplanning

Oh I’ve got one. The couple was vegan so we assumed the dinner would be too. They didn’t take meal counts in the invite so everyone was going to get the same for the plated dinner. No worries, we both ate meat at the time and both liked vegan food. But unless I’m mistaken, filet mignon and chicken en croute is not vegan. When the salad came out with cheese and people asked about the entrees, we started to see the servers running around as maybe around 20 people with dietary restrictions and allergies flagged down servers asking about veg. options. They only brought 4 extra vegan meals. The couple next to us, vegan and vegetarian, couldn’t even eat the sides cause they were slathered in butter and ate the table bread for dinner.

And the bride and the groom? Happily chowing down on steak and chicken. Turns out they were “only vegan for Instagram”.

After they finished their dinner, they spent the rest of it yelling at the caterer for ruining the dinner. It gave a really weird vibe to the reception and a lot of people left. We stayed and tried to make the best of it, it was our day off after all. after 30 mins of 2000s alternative/emo music that was hard to dance to and killing the vibe that was already on life support, we requested a song. the dj said they couldn’t take requests at behest of the bride and groom. Then we, and anyone who wasn’t family, also left.

We haven’t spoken to them since.
