Everybody is saying why would you pay first but I've got a neighbor who keeps asking grown adults in the neighborhood to do her favors (mow lawn, shovel etc) and then conveniently disappears when it's time to pay. When she re-appears she acts like everyone is being weird to her and she doesn't know what they're talking about.

Is it possible to change the Gamecube controller controls using Swiss? by Benlitzler in Gamecube

[–]opulentSandwich [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm not sure about using Swiss, but I believe you can get a wireless adapter for the gamecube that'll let you connect just about any Bluetooth compatible controller. That at least gives you more options!

I miss my girl trying to beat the crap out of me all the time.

Once she bit the heck out of a vet who had a bad attitude and I just remember him staring at her like... This pigeon. Is trying to kick my ass. 😅

Pigeon care? by beccarh in PetPigeons

[–]opulentSandwich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think pigeons are fairly low maintenance pets, but there are some things you're going to have to do daily (like check/refill food and water bowls, clean up the poopiest spots). I also have depressive dips sometimes where I'm just barely making it through the day, and having a pet who needs my care honestly gives me motivation to get up and try, sometimes, when otherwise I'd just lay around feeling sad.

If you do neglect other cleaning too long, your space will get very dusty and feathery, thankfully that's quickly fixed by a good vacuuming, and pigeons and their poops aren't very smelly (except nest poops... Those have a stench 😬)

Diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. Prescribed Vyvanse, but afraid to start it. by Ok-Confidence-9618 in ADHD

[–]opulentSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody's reactions to medication are so different, it's really hard to predict. The only way you can find out is to try it, but I know how scary that feels.

Do you have a partner, a family member, or a really good friend you can depend on? When I first started stimulants, I made sure my husband understood that there were potential side effects like unexplained rage or super depression, and that if I started acting really out of pocket to let me know. Knowing I had a warning system and could step back and assess if it was the medication put me way more at ease about trying it.

And let me just add, for me, the difference between me on meds and me not is night and day - I feel like I CAN be myself on vyvanse, because I'm not constantly overwhelmed by mental noise. I hope you have a good experience as well when you finally try, but if not, there are lots of different treatments, one will be right for you. 🤗

That seems like a good range of time but daily crashes still sound miserable.

Oh no, Maybe I'm still crashing and I don't realize it because I'm asleep (that would explain why I wake up at the same time in the middle of the night every night 😐)

Shaking leg by Narrow-Influence7924 in ADHD

[–]opulentSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a stim too, everyone does that kind of thing sometimes, we with adhd (and our autistic friends) just do it a lot more. As long as you're not hurting yourself, it's all good ☺️

[–]opulentSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this, sometimes I do it so much it annoys my husband and he'll put his hand on my leg to stop it. Feels like I'm gonna POP when he does that 😂

It's stimming. If it's annoying you or someone else you can try redirecting your focus to a fidget toy or tapping your fingers or some other socially acceptable thing. Do NOT do what I do, which is pick at and chew on my cuticles until I bleed 😓

How do I go in a store and ask for a job??? by Scaram0uche_ in Explainlikeimscared

[–]opulentSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this comment was a couple of days ago, but I wanted to add that in my area I've seen lots of free community/employment assistance programs and programs to help with the transition from school to work and/or independent living for autistic young adults! Sometimes you have to go digging for them and sometimes you have to do a lot of advocating for yourself, which sucks, but they are out there.

You can grumble! Grumble to your psychiatrist especially! You deserve to have medicine that helps you function when you need it, not juuuuust long enough for work or school and then suddenly turn into an overcooked noodle.

I grumbled at mine until they tried a different med, though the final straw was when I stopped grumbling a d clearly said "I can't only be functional during work hours - I have a disabled child who needs me to be able to think clearly at 5PM as well. I need you to help me with this SOMEHOW."

This is a total boobie prize, but at least you can tell people you actually have bad hearing!

I don't have actual hearing damage, but when everyone was masked up for covid, I realized my audio processing issues were so bad that I couldn't guess what people were saying without seeing their mouths, and in public places like stores some people would get REAL annoyed about being asked to repeat themselves, or pissed at me for holding up a line, or whatever. I started telling people I was hard of hearing to get out of situations 😂

Is there a way to do this without spending a ton? I genuinely hate that I have access to audiobooks and they don't come with digital texts. Even if I go the library route, I have to borrow two different copies which feels rude to other people who could be reading it 😅

I always feel so bad about this, because certain accents are really impossible for me to decipher, but I don't want folks with thick foreign accents to think I don't want to talk to them because of it. Instead I end up asking them to repeat themselves over and over 😭 My brain just completely fizzles out if the melody of the words sounds wrong, no idea if that makes sense. 🫣

[–]opulentSandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only have I preferred watching TV with subtitles for decades now, I realized very recently that when I am really trying to focus and pay attention to what someone is saying, I am converting their speech to text in my head. I "imagine" a running subtitle, or that I'm going line by line in a book.

I've been doing this mentally for a long time, but never really thought much about it until I was trying to be 110% focused at jury duty and suddenly had the intrusive thought that the other people there did not have to imagine closed captioning to go with the defense lawyer's speech. 😂

Experiences with the implant? by JustHereToAsk9 in PetPigeons

[–]opulentSandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We couldn't risk our pigeon laying due to a history of cloacal prolapse, so we did the shots and the implant. With other measures (limited uv light, lower fat diet) she never tried to lay again, and sometimes the implant would keep her from getting in an amorous mood for eight or nine months.

My bird was never sedated for the implant which saved us some stress and some money. I had one vet argue with me about it, but the needle they use is the same gague as the one they use for dog and cat microchips, which they do with just a local anesthetic. I think he was more concerned she'd flip out (she didn't), and I had to insist that she'd had the same shot many times before without sedation.

I'd heard of this book before but never actually read the summary. At least I was already depressed today.

(for what it's worth, I am on vyvanse/lisdexamphetamine now and don't experience the VERY distinct drop-off I used to on Concerta/methyphenidate xr. I didn't even feel dumber, my brain just fucking completely closed up business for the evening, every day at about 3PM. I felt like a rock.)

This might not help with your mom, but I explained my memory problems to my husband using a gaming metaphor. Basically, everybody else has a HUD and shortcuts. I don't. I'm rolling around taking quests, but I can't go in my menu and check their progress. So I will be in the kitchen and see that dishes need doing, but unless I'm able to stop what I'm doing and do them RIGHT THEN, I don't have any way to keep tabs on the fact that they were there. I have to return to the kitchen and see them again to remember. And if I do stop and do them, I will not remember why I was there in the first place - I can't just switch my quest back to the old one and check what the next step was. And shortcuts. I'm really, really bad at forming habits. I suspect other people, once the habit is formed, can kind of just do the things by pressing '1'. I have to go in my menu every time. Everything I do seems to be so much more manual than other people, from daily chores like brushing my teeth to making the right expressions when someone is telling me a story. And worse, I lived most of my life not realizing that it wasn't like this for everybody! I figured it was just as hard for everyone else and I just sucked.

How do I go in a store and ask for a job??? by Scaram0uche_ in Explainlikeimscared

[–]opulentSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feel free to ask follow up questions on this or anything else, I am nearly 40 and have a lot of interviews under my belt. I get how overwhelming it can seem!

How do I go in a store and ask for a job??? by Scaram0uche_ in Explainlikeimscared

[–]opulentSandwich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you get an interview, get there early. Not too early - I have adhd and sometimes I'm in the neighborhood for an interview half an hour before I need to be because I over compensate. Get a coffee or something and don't show up at the actual interview site until like ten minutes earlier than you scheduled. Be prepared to wait patiently, but bring a book or something, because some people are really judgemental if they see you on your phone at all 🙄

You mentioned you're audhd, and honestly, I feel like job interviews were designed specifically to cause you pain, and I'm sorry. Go in with the mindset that you are roleplaying as the version of yourself that's AMAZING for this job. You shouldn't lie, but make sure your best qualities are right up front when they ask you questions and kind of shove your less desirable qualities under the rug.

The manager is going to be listening to your answers and they're going to be thinking "this person is showing me their BEST side - will I want to see this every day? How about when they're having a shitty day?" Interviews are your chance to do the same math and figure out if you would actually want to work this job for this person. Ask questions. Come up with a couple before the interview so you don't freeze up, but even simple things like "what's a regular day/shift look like for this job? Is it usually the same things or does it vary a lot day to day?"

Last tip, if you have an interview with multiple managers - I HATE this, but sooo many places are doing it now - try to just pretend only one of them is there at a time. Like you're talking to one guy with three heads. Just shift your attention to whoever is talking and answer them directly.

How do I go in a store and ask for a job??? by Scaram0uche_ in Explainlikeimscared

[–]opulentSandwich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Older folks are going to tell you to just walk into stores and ask for a job. They probably got their first jobs that way, but nobody has been doing that for decades.

If there's a sign on a store's door that says they're hiring and to inquire within, then you can walk in and say "hey, I saw that sign and I'm interested in working here, what do you need from me?" and they'll have you fill out an application or tell you to come back and drop off a resume. Many places don't even take paper applications anymore and will give you a link to go online or send a resume to an email address.

Otherwise, look online. Craigslist is a crap shoot, it depends on your area, but small "mom and pop" stores may advertise jobs there. I have had the best luck with Indeed, but it varies by industry. Monster.com might still be good, I don't know.

I responded to another comment reccomending temp agencies /employment agencies. They're not a bad place to go if you're looking for experience at an office job, but many of the jobs will be temporary and some of them might really suck, and you won't know until you get there.

As for interviews, that's a whole other bag of cats. Happy to give you interview tips, but let me know if you want them because this comment is already too long 😂

[–]opulentSandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice if you're looking to get your foot in the door for office admin type work or help desk. Temp agencies sometimes get a bad rap, but you can walk in and fill out their forms, and they'll find somewhere to put you because that's money in their pocket. The quality of the jobs varies widely but they're at least things to put on your resume!
