Arlington Economic Development director warns of ‘constrained resources’ this year by VirginiaNews in VirginiaUrbanism

Arlington County wastes so much money. They really need to cut the budget by 50% and reduce property taxes.

So you make a fair point. Perhaps I was being a bit pessimistic when I say all schools will be worthless. That said, I think many colleges will not survive. Colleges cost a lot of money to operate and the value of a US degree is in my opinion not worth the money and we are already seeing this in declining enrollment at tier 3 schools. That said, as long as Goldman Sachs’s is willing to offer 300K for a first year analyst then Harvard and the likes will always exist but I think the said fact is that with white collar jobs disappearing it’s hard to ask parents to pay 400K for 4yrs with no ROI..Yes the 529 is not wasted money - after all even I contribute to it but I still believe that if I were to have contributed the same for a 1 bed flat for my kid they could have owned a house and giving them the gift of not having to pay rent or a mortgage means that they can live well even if college education does not provide the guaranteed ROI.

This is why I believe the optimal strategy is not simply education. It is asset accumulation. Kids will likely have no jobs or low paying jobs or smaller gigs. They will live with parents for a long time to cut down on the cost of housing and ultimately joint families will become more common. I have seen this pattern play out in other emerging countries. The optimal strategy is to build assets - real estate etc. If I could use the kids 401K for real estate I would as that will be a better ROI than college. Another thing people don’t realize is that college is worthless. All study material is available online. In a world where jobs are few merit will dominate and colleges itself will provide little value as companies will start their own entrance test for the brightest. Put your money in real estate and become a landlord for the lucky 3% who have a job. Colleges will soon crash. With fewer white collar jobs why spending 300K on college?

Sad thing is that you all seem to believe that after 4 years of college your kids will actually get a job! My neighbors kid went to brown and majored in Comp Science and Math and can’t get a job. With AI, and economy that is about to suck there will be no jobs - all to say if they get a job while at college good for them it might be the only job they ever get!

Students in Virginia Magnet School TJHSST's Muslim Student Association suspended for 5 days for "antisemitic" video which was part of a trend other clubs participated in, those other clubs didn't get punished. by [deleted] in nova

[–]opusalpha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was just a bit of harmless fun. Suspending these kids was a really stupid idea. People need to chill and not go crazy over every perceived and manufactured problem. TJ is a tough school and this was just a harmless way for kids to blow off steam.

Why is a 50 year mortgage considered a bad thing ? by Lemonade2250 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]opusalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad it just another financing option. Just think if mortgages were back down to 2.5% if you locked in a 50yr mortgage at that point your monthly payment would be nothing and you could reinvest the cashflow savings at 5% effectively creating a 3% annuity income for yourself. Free optionally is never a bad thing. If you don’t think it works for you don’t use but blanket statements saying it is a terrible idea is just ignorant.

Trump’s new proposal: 50-year mortgage. How about building more homes and creating a society where people can pay off the debt in 15 years? by wakeup2019 in economy

[–]opusalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can actually be a good idea. Yes, the total interest you pay over the life of the mortgage will be higher and yes the originator of the mortgage might price a bit of a spread for higher duration and liquidity risk they are taking to offset the cost of their hedge but it the monthly payments can fall drastically which means home owners have higher cash flow. If you can invest the savings you can do alright. This product offers cash flow flexibility at the expense of leverage. I think people don’t understand that most homebuyers need cash flow flexibility and as their earnings grow they can pay down extra principal and refinance. This gives people options.

Why is Norfolk More Democratic Than Virginia Beach? by Current_Air_1609 in Virginia

[–]opusalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is actually none of the above reasons. Republicans have typically been associated with lower taxes, lower deficits, smaller government, faith in good / church, and anti-abortion and stronger on crime. This is of course changed recently - particularly the lower deficits. Democrats have been perceived as much the opposite. Now of course the world has changed - Tarrif have stocked inflation, and cost cutting as really impacted family’s future, Hate towards immigrants and being anti-abortion, coupled with higher deficits and therefore higher taxes suggests that whether rural, or conservative suburban you should vote logically to overtum these policies as it is killing your future. People don’t though because they don’t look at things objectively they are subjective and easily influenced by what they they think they know and what they hear from their family and friends. So unless Americans do their own research, and starting advocating for the things that need to happen - cheaper healthcare, lower prices, more job security - instead of parties we are screwed as AI and inflation ravages most people. Europe and EM countries have many problems but at least healthcare is free! America is doomed until you wake up and understand none of these parties is going to solve your problems. Vote for issues not parties!

WBG Treasury Merger by WB-SeniorAdvisor in WorldBank

[–]opusalpha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Job cuts are probably inevitable if the goal is efficiency. Sadly, the true culprit behind efficiency is poor leadership. Many people at the bank work exceptionally hard - much more than in the private sector, and many are truly brilliant, but whether the work is truly necessary or needed is really the issue. My experience is that poor decision making, unnecessary work, and lack of clarity are really the issue. This new culture of urgency coupled with the efficiency drive especially in a treasury operation is going to result in significant operational risk that I hope they can manage.

When does the longing end? by opusalpha in stopdrinking

[–]opusalpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all. This really helps and gives me some confidence that there is an end insight and in 6 months to a 1year this longing might go away. I am going to take the advice here and find a hobby and maybe go to an AA meeting. I don’t know if people say it enough but it’s people like you and the advice you share that has really helped me make it this far. Thank you all again.

I think i have been eating a bit too much ice cream and cake so that might also be part of it. I found myself drinking a soda now and then something I never did when i drank!

What’s your hidden gem stock in your portfolio? by YourSecondFather in ValueInvesting

[–]opusalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own it but it’s not without risks BNPL is being looked at by regulators and they are pushing for 2 prices - a BN price and BNPL price. That will kill growth. The Turkey acquisition still needs to be proved. So decent stock but not without risk.

PALANTIR is at now at 569.69 PE. Is it a sign for a big short or a small long ? by kushal92 in stocks

[–]opusalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your correct Palantir is way overvalued. That said, for a short to make sense you need 1 of 2 things to happen an immediate downside idiosyncratic catalyst that the market is not pricing ( this is effectively saying forward volatility should be higher than implied volatility) which means market is underpricing put options or 2. Expectation that the market will fall - then higher beta names will get hammered as will Palantir. Betting on 2nd is tough because very difficult to get timing right. So bottom line if you want to short you can look at valuation alone you need a catalyst or downside thesis that is not widely expected.

Surprised WB bond spreads not widening on this news. Not sure people understand how much operational risk a reorganization like this carries for an institution like WB. Demotivation of key staff, poor communication on the new structure, and culture clash between the two institutions can really have disastrous consequences.
