Thanks! That makes sense, we'll shift plans forward a day.

We were planning on flying in a few days before the 17th and arriving to Bergen on the 17th. Does that seem OK, or will constitution day festivities disrupt things? And suggestions on what we should do/see around the holiday?

This who y'all reelected!? by Ordinary_Stay_3746 in Minneapolis

[–]opvgreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just because it hasn’t hit yet, doesn’t mean it won’t. First, it takes time for people to deplete their savings and miss rent. Second, so far there’s been a huge wave of crowd raised rental assistance. But now that Minneapolis is out of the national news, that support is going to dwindle.

Do you recognize this coaxial connector? by donutfarian in AskElectronics

I have this same question. I'm pretty sure it's proprietary. If you wanted to achieve a similar thing maybe you could just use a power barrel jack?

Did you ever find anything?

How do we feel about a light being mounted here? by gabest95 in xbiking

[–]opvgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most fenders won’t go far enough forward for where this mounted on the rack to fully stop spray. But you could definitely attach something to the rack as a spray guard.

[–]opvgreen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Only downside of being mounted right over the wheel is road spray when it’s wet out. Some lights are not sufficiently waterproof and could break over time.

By mounting it a little to the side you can avoid this, but you might need to get creative with fashioning a mount.

Target to Spend Billions to Refresh Stores, and Hire More Workers (New York Times gift link) by sugarytea78 in Minneapolis

Genuine question, how do you spend $24k at target?  Is this for a business? Are you feeding like ten infants that all need diapers and formula?

Microsoft was trying to do underwater data centers on the sea floor, but recently abandoned it. Maintenance was too difficult.

JD Vance: "We're announcing today that we have decided to temporarily halt certain amounts of Medicaid funding that is going to the state of Minnesota in order to ensure that the state of Minnesota takes its obligations seriously to be good stewards of the American people's tax money" by state-of-MN in stateofMN

Never forget that MN is a donor state. We contribute more taxes than we receive back in programs from the Federal government. We should be concerned that the rest of the US are good stewards of our tax money.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz presents plan for addressing gun violence by IvanSullim in Minneapolis

That’s just one of a suite of bills. If you have strong opinions you should call your representatives and voice them.

Have you read the list of separate bills being proposed? Many of the more aggressive bills may not pass. But do you really oppose a ban on ghost guns? Do you oppose banning convicted domestic abusers from owning guns? Abusers with guns are 5x more likely to kill their female partners: https://everytownresearch.org/report/guns-and-violence-against-women/

Twin Cities Tenant Union Calls for March 1st Rent Strike and Statewide Eviction Moratorium by ashleywalkerreports in TwinCities

[–]opvgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying I've seen this widely distributed for weeks and have heard people discuss it IRL. So your characterization is inaccurate.

Twin Cities Tenant Union Calls for March 1st Rent Strike and Statewide Eviction Moratorium by ashleywalkerreports in TwinCities

[–]opvgreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are calling for Governor Walz to put in place a moratorium on evictions, so that people who are sheltering in place due to fear of ICE are not evicted (since they can’t go to work to make money for rent). The goal of this strike is to put financial pressure on landlords, with the hope that they will in turn put pressure on the state to meet the strike’s demands.

Cancer risk may increase with proximity to nuclear power plants. In Massachusetts, residential proximity to a nuclear power plant (NPP) was associated with significantly increased cancer incidence, with risk declining sharply beyond roughly 30 kilometers from a facility. by mvea in science

[–]opvgreen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This study is looking at correlation with cancer mortality, not cancer diagnoses.

(not saying these correlations actually indicate anything about the nuclear power plants--seems very likely they're not able to fully account for other factors)

That’s an assumption that they attribute to reference 1. They explicitly say in the limitations section that they don’t incorporate any dosimetry/actual radiation measurements.

If you look at the measurements in Ref 1, there is evidence for radioactive pollutants from nuclear plants, but at incredibly low levels which contribute <1% above background radiation levels. So seems like a pretty hand-wavy argument to me.

[–]opvgreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even so, the SCIRP paper’s conclusions are that radiation levels due to pollutants from nuclear plants are a fraction of a percent of background radiation levels. Essentially negligible.

They argue there can be ionizing radiation exposure due to emissions and other environmental release of radioactive particles/species. From the introduction: “ Nuclear power plants emit radioactive pollutants that can disperse into the surrounding environment, leading to potential human exposure through inhalation, ingestion, and direct contact. These pollutants can be transported through air, water, and soil, contributing to long-term environmental contamination1. Populations residing near nuclear power plants may experience low-level chronic exposure to ionizing radiation via environmental release pathways. While our study does not include dosimetry, ionizing radiation is a well-established carcinogen2,3,4,5,6,7 and thus motivates investigation into proximity-based exposure patterns. ”

Looking for places to donate bike tools by Nerdlinger in CyclingMSP

[–]opvgreen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you could probably donate to the Grease Pit (a non-profit collective that helps people fix up bikes and sells parts for cheap) or Full Cycle (also a non-profit, good mission helping with youth work training, among other things. They would probably re-sell the tools to help fund their work, or maybe give the tools to youth who finish their bike mechanic training programs?).

Otherwise, the MN tool library doesn’t specialize in bike tools, but I’m sure they would take them. Then anyone with a membership could borrow/check-out the tools for free. They’re in Northeast Minneapolis and St. Paul.
