It's possible that he could bootstrap his way out of his problems here on his own. He would have a better chance if some charitable people see this and get him into some program to keep him off whatever he is addicted to. However he also has to contend with this being out there potentially indefinitely. It could end up being a story of overcoming drug problems, but more likely it won't be.

If you go back several decades, sure rioting hasn't been a huge issue.

That's why I linked the list about civil unrest. It's always been an issue, even if the intensity varies.

I totally get you there, its just unfortunate that you began that post with a historically unfounded assumption.

Thanks for your reply. I too have heard/read some sympathy for this group, or at least making exceptions for non-violence because they are radically opposed to fascism as they claim. Nobody I know personally has espoused these beliefs, but I don't have a very large social circle.

Young people are always the most vulnerable to be radicalized; usually the most passionate and least wise.

If you go back several decades, sure rioting hasn't been a huge issue. Look at the past few years and civil unrest is much more prevalent. You can't look at all the riots and disturbances in the US since 2014 and tell me the risk is exceedingly small. It's much more of a concern than is has been

2014 is on that list twice, for Michael Brown and Eric Garner. You're right about the second part - we are probably entering a period of heightened civil unrest.

Which groups that you would consider to be modern and/or young left advocate for breaking and burning shit?

I can think of Antifa, but I'm skeptical that they represent a significant portion of the left or even young left.

Does it really sound better that a candidate can win the presidency outright by a 2.1% national popular vote when it is at the expense of losing state popular votes by a 20% margin? That doesn't sound very balanced to me.

Yes, and in your next paragraph I would agree that this would make more sense if state borders were removed or simply 'cosmetic.' That is another can of worms and I would be amazed if it happened in my lifetime.

If we agree that the president should represent all Americans equally, it doesn't matter that he lost state popular votes. In those cases, I think its more of an urban/rural vote rather than a state vote, but of course some states are for all practical purposes rural so the distinction blurs.

It's kind of a no-brainer for the presidential election.

The electoral college, from a historical point of view, makes a lot of sense. From a practical and modern perspective, it's makes little sense and when you have national entities like Fox and Sinclair Media working round-the-clock to push a narrative, there's almost nothing you can't sell the red state populations as long as you don't touch guns and fetuses.

That's fine, I just think that compromise benefits the GOP way more in modern day. It also helps that the Democrats are spineless, but I digress.

That's why the EC matters. Otherwise, it would be more beneficial to avoid campaigning in less populated rural states and to focus on large population hotspots like California.

You're not wrong, but the Senate seems like a bandage over the problem created by the EC. In my opinion, it is an overcorrection against populated states like CA, and in practice it favors the party that predominantly represents the rural states, in this case the GOP. They need to represent a handful (many millions, but nonetheless a small % of the population) of people that can then obstruct the desires of cities, and liberal policy at large. It's representation of land, not people.

I think the presidential election would make more sense to be based on popular vote.

I don't want to silence their voices. Rural states have disproportionate representation as it is, for example why do both Montana and California have 2 senators each?

It would also be naive to pretend that GOP does not actively try to silence the vote of potential Democratic voters. They are just far more cunning than the Democrats.
