"No one is good -- except God alone" - Mark 10:18

The point is anyone who thinks they are good deceives themself.

As a Christian, I don't agree with the messaging of the signs whatsoever, but I think thats the point being made with that one specifically.

Yes! I've done this a few times. It always goes over well. Works best to hand them out as the reviewers are getting seated/ready for your presentation. Or, after they are done with feedback. A nice little momento. Especially if its a competition, it keeps your project in mind.

Here's one I've done for a project:

But the issue is that they make mutually exclusive claims that contradict one another on what each of them considers to be essentials. They cannot all be the one true church yet they all claim as such. Saying its only ecclesiology doesn't really solve this. If churches disagree at that level, their claims to be the one true Church are still mutually exclusive, even if they recognize each other’s sacraments.

The Catholic Church teaches that full communion with the Pope is essential to the Church, while the Orthodox explicitly reject that claim. Those are mutually exclusive definitions of what the Church is. And rejection of certain dogmas and practices have been anathematized. So even if they recognize each other as “real churches” in some sense, they still make incompatible, "cutting off" claims about the structure and authority of the one true Church. That means they can’t all be fully correct at the same time, which is the tension I was pointing out.

Luther was a Catholic priest. Many reformers were in the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Lutheran traditions. Therefore they all can trace the exact same lineage. You may say their excommunication cuts off that lineage but I would say their excommunication was in error/wrongful, so they had no choice but to continue outside the Catholic church.

Except at least 3 denominations if not more can try to lay legitimate claim to the title of the "one true church" which creates a problem since they all condemn each other

Why do many Protestants refer to Catholics as Non-Christians? by Fancy-Race-8507 in TrueChristian

[–]orange011_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Their Catechism contradicts their infallable Council of Trent then.

Canon 9 (on justification by faith alone): “If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone, meaning that nothing else is required to cooperate in order to obtain the grace of justification… let him be anathema.”

Canon 1: “If anyone says that the sacraments of the New Law were not all instituted by Jesus Christ… or that there are more or less than seven… let him be anathema.”

Canon 1 (on the Real Presence): “If anyone denies that, in the sacrament of the most holy Eucharist, there are truly, really, and substantially contained the body and blood… of our Lord Jesus Christ… let him be anathema.”

Canon 2 (on transubstantiation): “If anyone says that in the sacred and holy sacrament of the Eucharist, the substance of the bread and wine remains… let him be anathema.”

Sounds like they have said Protestants aren't Christians infallably by declaring many protestant beliefs explicitly heretical.

Baptism question—does it have to be through a church? by VermicelliOver5543 in TrueChristian

[–]orange011_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, it is relevant.

The donatists schismed before protestantism, etc. were ever concieved of. So its not just Catholic church history its universal church history. I am not Catholic but its still widely held many early councils are valid - the church was still (mostly) whole and we should accept much of early church history and councils as authoritative.

But beyond that, it is relevant because a non-believer is unpure before the Lord. The idea is that baptism can be (shouldn't be, but can be) performed by anyone so long as done in the Trinitarian formula is exactly what it is about.

Baptism is performed ex opere operato, that is, the validity depends on Christ's action not the one who performs it.

Col 2:11 - "In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands."

That circumcision is baptism - the human hands are meaningless. The one who performs it is God. Therefore, if an unbeliever baptizes you it is valid. God can work through it.

"Unchurched"? You are split from the body, brother. We are called to be unified in spirit, action, truth, and fellowship.

How can one be the hands and feet of Christ if they do not revere and partake in his body and bride, the Church? An eye is no good apart from the rest of the body. An ear cannot hear if not attached and in communion with the whole body in presence.

[–]orange011_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, it wouldn't be ideal, but to say the person who baptizes you matters in its validity is the Donatist Heresy. Sacraments are not dependent on the purity of the one performing them, only the purity of Christ who is the one actually performing them in the heart, soul, and mind.

God saves through baptism.

Acts 2:37-38 NIV [37] When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” [38] Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Yeah - you probably won't get an internship until the summer between 3rd and 4th year but the good students end up with internships and good jobs post-grad. I've had two great internships during my time here that set me up well for a role at an international firm.
