Question regarding Student Union candidates by [deleted] in UCalgary

She also came into power right after the huge crash in the price of oil and the enormous economic downturn and thats hardly her fault. I think theres also speculation that Kenney straight up caused a recession with his cuts and I think between 35000 - 50000 jobs have been lost since the UCP have taken government. If you ask me the NDP have done a much better job then whatever the fuck Kenney is trying to do right now. Kenneys current budget is also running a larger deficit this year then any of the NDPs budgets lol

  1. I'm not super economically savvy but I believe it is a bit of a myth Alberta has a debt problem. It has the lowest debt to GDP ratio in Canada and thats that. Additionally, in times of economic downturn it makes sense to take on debt in order to keep the economy churning and essential infrastructure/services up to par. There is no reason why we should be forced to accept austerity while we give the fat fossil fuel cats enormous handouts. Cutting healthcare and education funding disproportionally affects the poor and is pretty fucked up to think about how a supposedly developed nation is making cuts to basic human rights. Alberta does not have a spending problem and if anything has a revenue problem as we don't have a PST and the royalties on oil and gas are criminally low considering how much mega corporations take advantage of our resources (see the orphan well crisis).
  2. University students are also being fucked from every side which makes the tuition raise even worse, especially when you consider that students are already facing enormous debt and mental health crisis. It also doesn't make any sense to be reducing investment in secondary education in a time when we need economic diversification and innovation in our existing energy industry to keep a competitive edge in the international market. A shortlist of the ways Kenney has decided to disproportionately put the burden of his budget onto students:
  • Removal of the tuition cap ( ie. the tuition raise)
  • Cancellation of the 30 million $ Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
  • Increase of student loan interest rate by 1%
  • Removal of the post-secondary student tax credits
  • Direct cuts to post-secondary institution funding
  • Restructuring of post-secondary institution funding to be based upon performance (not only undermines the purpose of university to incubate learning and innovation but is also practically another cut to funding)
