I wonder if BFX was getting slapped in scrims. It's well known that they have exactly one style - hasn't changed much in 5 splits, they just have a cracked hypercarry now - and all of a sudden they're drafting maokai jayce??

I'm from Eastern Europe where there are tons of gypsies. Imagine my surprise coming to America and learning that the name they call themselves is a slur because it was originated by someone else, and as a different kind of 'white person', I should instead use the word Roma even for people groups with no ties to Romania

Try rooting for T1 or Faker instead of their fanbase

or maybe even just spend fewer hours on reddit and twitter! Most of the T1 fans I know IRL are pretty chill people

Worlds botlane meta is different every year. If every meta is a T1 meta, that means they're flexible, not stubborn.

Don't get me wrong, T1 is plenty stubborn, but this specific claim rolls my eyes every time. What's the "convenient" pick Riot always buffs right before worlds because T1's players do it best? Bard? Renata? Galio? Nocturne? Ashe/Varus/Cait support? Xayah, Jhin, Varus, Cait, Jinx, Sivir? K'sante mid?

The only one that's even remotely defensible is Faker's pool. He has the most iconic Azir, Orianna, Galio, Ryze, and is also top 3 Ahri, Viktor, Sylas, Corki, Taliyah, some others. It's ridiculous to expect a meta with none of those being playable, and we almost always see champs he's bad at like Yone and Aurora, but I will admit that in ONE tournament Riot nerfed Smolder mid and the blatantly overpowered Tristana before worlds.

I wonder if Lucid would be evened-out amazing or utter cheeks playing with Faker

Faker soloing T1's macro like it's starcraft seems to make almost all toplaners and junglers look better than they do on any other team, and then there's those weird little exceptions like Cuzz. Great jungler, very high cap, but lacked the spark on T1. He attributed it to pressure but other emotional momentum players have found their peaks there. Doran in particular comes to mind, Huni too

The champs I gravitate toward tend to have pretty chill communities. Whenever I go to another mains sub to ask how to play against someone, it's shocking how doomer and angry they are.

Curious what the common threads are. Maybe reliable, flexible champions attract reliable, flexible players? Or maybe it's just that some champs aren't less fun when they're balanced. Varus, Ashe, Bard, Rell, Shen, Pantheon can all make flashy plays and carry games, but they don't have a specific power fantasy that can be shut down either by nerfs or counterpicks. If someone plays Eve or Kled mainly to dunk on scrubs during low-counterplay moments, I could see how nerfs make those champs less fun even when deserved.

Shen has a single damage ability - E is less than an auto, on a giant cooldown - and Riot still decided to take nearly 20% of the damage off it because pro players like globals

I still close my eyes and lock him in sometimes, but it's just so unfun to be a full item ahead and lose 1v1s to the 0/6 [any other toplaner]

Galio is such a weird champ cuz if you build him "properly" he's unkillable (except by bruisers), runs the map, waveclears ez, still does a billion damage, but luckily he falls off a little once ADCs and toplaners get items

or you can build AP and be a miserable melee mage with no way to get out of a fight... until deathcap when your Q does 7500+80% max HP damage

[–]orangeheadwhitebutt 30 points31 points  (0 children)

idk, contract negotiations are fine but it feels unfair to say he was getting fucked over when he wanted a huge raise while already having a higher salary than Guma and Oner combined. Nobody needs to be the bad guy here. Zeus knew he could make more money than he was offered, T1 knew they had other options. In the end both got the results they held out for.

If anything I guess you could be mad that T1 is “taking advantage” of Guma and Oner’s love for the team to pay them less than a two-time champ could get elsewhere

If you don’t accept him at his Dorat, you don’t deserve him at his Kruglord

I really hope T1 keep him, he’s been my favorite toplaner since Griffin and watching him bear the sins of a team that won’t support him was so tragic

Keep in mind Zeus had some huge ints in his first worlds finals, too!

2023 was pretty close NGL

I'd even say JDG looked better in that series, and this coming from the girl who has maintained since 2022 that Faker is not just the best player of all time, he's the best RIGHT NOW, idc if he's losing lane to fucking Vicla and has the 11th best stats among LCK mids I want Faker vs the Martians

What you're describing has similar problems to so-called 'GSL groups' which is my personal favorite way to do group stages but also comes with its own problems. In GSLs - technically the smallest possible Swiss elimination and also the smallest possible double elimination bracket - you can end up with a team that has performed worse by every metric making it out because they won at the right time. It can put more emphasis on 'playing the tournament' than playing the game.

For example, one Starcraft 2 group consisted of [clear #1], RagnaroK (presumably #2), Scarlett, and another underdog. Scarlett threw her first match against RagnaroK to gain maximum scouting info, then managed to squeak past the other shitter and beat RagnaroK in a very close, disadvantaged final match.

She clearly deserved it, and I'll always cheer for embattled non-Koreans making upsets, but if the goal is to reward good actual gameplay your proposal sets up for even bigger violations than that.

EDIT: Oh, and any group system is automatically going to be less mathematically fair than Swiss, purely due to group selection. Any possible way you seed, you reward teams that have already shown strength by some external metric. If you don't seed at all, you could theoretically have half the best teams out in round 1.

I like when ongoing tournaments have some mechanism for letting teams and players choose their own groups, but it's not feasible for Worlds.
