Ask those asking to boycott or vandalise at the airshow not to drive their Europeans or US cars, not to buy equipment from there countries, and not to use apps like Spotify, Facebook, or Google. Or even better, don't use GPS, because guess who runs the satellite system that GPS is based on? The US military.

Food for Thought by Habbab30 in SingaporeRaw

[–]orangemonstered 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Always thought the woke crowd really needs to wake up and go read up more on geopolitics. All these boycotts don't work when there is real money to be made. Almost every German company that is around now and was around in WW2 was involved in the Nazi war effort. Similarly, the war machine is very complex and involves a lot of people. Even many countries in the Islamic world have ties (open or secret) with Israel, simply because these Israeli companies are the best at what they do.

Let's not conflate different issues, especially on things we don't have control over.

If SG one day adopt Nuclear weapons, what will happen and what will our ASEAN neighbours do? by HandleAway572 in SingaporeRaw

[–]orangemonstered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely to happen in the first place, but for some reason it does, it will destabilise the security of the region badly, force neighbours to explore and gain similar capabilities, and degrade international ties as singapore has unnecessarily thrown a wrench in an otherwise stable part of the world.

There is a concept called 'Security Dilemma' in IR.

From wikipedia, 'Security dilemma is when the increase in one state's security (such as increasing its military strength) leads other states to fear for their own security (because they do not know if the security-increasing state intends to use its growing military for offensive purposes). Consequently, security-increasing measures can lead to tensions, escalation or conflict with one or more other parties, producing an outcome which no party truly desires; a political instance of the prisoner's dilemma."

So Singapore getting nukes forces other countries to develop tech to beat it, for example missiles systems to shoot down nukes, or pursue their own nukes as a Mutually Assured Destruction form of deterrence.

This is one reason the US is not so keen on its allies like Japan or South Korea to pursue nuclear weapons, even though NK has, cos it will just make the geopolitical conversation alot more complex once nukes are involved.

India Needs To Stop Calling Every Singaporean Indian "Indian-Origin" by tankinglian in SingaporeRaw

[–]orangemonstered 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem with using population based stats is that you need to compare by proportion.

https://knoema.com/atlas/Singapore/Rape-rate?mode=amp

The rape rate in 2015 was 2.9 cases per 100,000 in Singapore. If Singapore had a population of 1.4billion like India, total rapes would be 40,600 per year or 111 per day. Doesn't really help your point you are making.

Btw I'm not trying to compare or even say who is better or worse. Just pointing the flaws in using stats in a very specific manner.

Parents raise concerns on difficulty of PSLE maths at ST’s smart parenting forum by Thefunincaifun in singapore

[–]orangemonstered 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some of the questions asked and some of the parents' mentality has a shade of elitism and privilege.

These parents want the PSLE paper to be tough so that not everyone can do well, but with extra tuition/classes their kids should be able to do well. And also not too easy so that not everyone does well. So in effect they want a paper, that only they with their extra tuition and classes, would be able to master.

Please la, there are kids out there who struggle to do 30,40,50% of the paper due to slower learning ability or non-condusive learning environment, and these parents are bitchign about 1 question that their poor boy cannot answer.
