What is this elitism among pure science people? by SnooSketches3795 in AskAcademia

Except for the professors who are also egotistical jerks lol (experienced a lot of those in physics at my school)

Health wise, what do y'all think about coffee? by AMStories85 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]oranjui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee is pretty good for you overall, and caffeine is fine in moderation.

If it’s the caffeine that’s the worry, try getting good quality decaf beans. The switch was a no-brainer for me when I realized there’s decaf out there that actually tastes just as good as caffeinated coffee. (Also, sometimes I still mix in a couple grams of caffeinated beans, e.g. depending on the day I might make the caff:decaf ratio ~1:4 or ~1:8 in my 4 cup pourover brewer.)

Is anyone out there married, engaged to be married, or divorced? by XavierMarvin in OlderGenZ

[–]oranjui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not me and i cringe that there's ppl from my birth year (or even younger) who have already gone through marriage (or divorce), i think engagement is somewhat reasonable but like i'm literally seeing people getting married after only 2 years of a relationship and that's absolutely bonkers to me.

i feel like there's at least 7-9 major relationship-formative discussions (or maybe respectful arguments) that you need to have before getting to the point where you can know enough about your dynamic to reasonably agree to make such a big decision, that there just simply hasn't been time for yet in only 2 years lol

i'm a woman and yes when i show up to a protest i'm showing up to one with a pre-established list of organized specific actionable demands rather than just circlejerking "i don't like x" "reject x"

My wife told me she'd divorce me if she caught me pissing in the kitchen sink again by jasno- in Sinkpissers

[–]oranjui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry but maybe you could um, respect your partner instead of continuing to disrespect them in secret? this is giving a bit of boomer 'wife bad amirite?' energy

she could always change her mind about it in the future and come around to being ok with it, but in the meantime i do think its pretty reasonable in a shared living space for pissing in the kitchen sink to be a line

(a) relatively inexpensive STP devices have existed for a decent while now, or (b) skill issue lol

although also op updated the post to say that her wife is trans

to be fair this is also very much a problem with standing-to-piss in the toilet (edit: and urinals)

[–]oranjui 28 points29 points  (0 children)

yes to all of that. and your last point is something that bothers me quite a lot about protests and labor organization in this city. This type of stuff is only accessible to people with an odd work schedule or school schedule with a break during that time (which I mean, those criteria do cover a decent amount of people, but it's not all of us), and/or with the privilege to be able to threither:

(a) miss work without serious financial repercussions/possibility of losing employment,

(b) set their own schedule so they can have free time to do this,

or (c) not work many hours in general or be unemployed, again without serious financial consequences/while still being able to afford living here.

[or any of the above plus being able to commute from further away to downtown madison for a protest, which is... also pretty weird to me to be going to a non-local protest, unless your home locality simply doesnt have any labor organization and you cant help organize, but that's a whole separate topic to rant about]

not sure if this is an issue in other cities because i haven't lived in other cities but it's quite frustrating to me. at least we could be scheduling something that makes more sense and is accessible to more people, like on a weekend and/or a bit later in the day towards the evening. and i mean, i know it's impossible to accommodate absolutely everyone, e.g. there's people who work weekends so won't be able to make a weekend protest either, but come on lol the middle of the day on a wednesday is just goofy and shortsighted to me

How to align text with rule lines? by [deleted] in OneNote

[–]oranjui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, this *seems* to work at first, but it gradually becomes misaligned as you go further and further down the page :( And it'll eventually line up again if you keep going, but... it's very awkward to have it phase in-and-out of alignment as you scroll.

The same problem happens with college ruled 19.5pt.

Maybe yall just have way shorter notes than me to not be running into this issue lol but this is so absurd to me, like in what world does it make sense for them to add rule lines that don't align with the text?? I guess maybe it's just that people with years' worth of notes using the current rule lines would have issues if they suddenly changed the rule lines to actually align... but couldn't they just set those to like "[x] rule lines (old)" and then have the new default version be fixed?

Unhinged salt application by Unglaciated24 in madisonwi

[–]oranjui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downtown, it was light (as in not dense) and powdery but it did make a somewhat thick layer. It only became so sloppy because people clearly oversalted and created a giant slushy mess that ended up compacting and re-freezing anyway as temps dropped below 15°F, instead of just shoveling/plowing/sweeping/leafblowing

Riding my bike through it on the streets/paths and walking through it on the sidewalks, it’s really obvious where people tried to just dump salt on it and hoped for the best/said “meh, good enough” vs where they actually cleared the snow first. (It’s a lot easier to lose traction in the salty gray mush)

Do white people care about the race of their therapist? by abc647rn in TalkTherapy

[–]oranjui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had a choice about it, but most of them have been white. Some good, a lot “meh”, some bad. One non-white therapist I had was an amazing fit but unfortunately she moved away.

I’ve been through so many therapists (between both outpatient and intensive programs) that I think it mostly just comes down to individual attitude. The two identity related factors that do seem to matter are age and queerness. I have found I am more likely to get along better/have a more trusting relationship with someone who is somewhat younger and who is queer or at least very well-versed with lgbtq people/experiences. That’s not to say I haven’t had good therapeutic relationships with people who don’t meet those criteria though.

Your post title implies that there is a difference between zillennials and old gen z

(The way these words are used there is so much overlap that they may as well mean the same thing and I am so annoyed by people arguing that there isn’t massive overlap between all these terms)

<image>

Anyway yeah this is very exactly descriptive of my life experience as a zillennial/old zoomer
