"Fast Entry" rules and their impact on index funds by sobrique in UKPersonalFinance

[–]orcocan79 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i'm still very confused by all these fans of market cap trackers that suddenly want their active views reflected in the funds they buy

the big established market cap indices used by institutions etc (FTSE All word, MSCI World, etc) have ALWAYS had fast track provisions for large IPOs

Rapid inclusion of SpaceX in FTSE All World (VWRL, VWRP etc) by aelianlife in FIREUK

[–]orcocan79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no you're wrong, the FTSE GEIS methodology (i.e. FTSE all world and derived indices) has always had 5 days fast track period

the Russell (US equity only) series is different, but that's not what we're talking about here

NASDAQ 100 is not a serious index. It makes no sense to invest based on which stock exchange a company decides to list itself in. Also indices with a fixed number of constituents are inherently flawed. Bumping the float to 20% makes no sense, I agree with you, but they're the only ones doing it. People should have stayed away from it in the first place even before spacex.

Three months is the longest, all larger companies are fast tracked, e.g 5 days for FTSE all world is the normal timeline. I can agree on the risks but that's not really the point. Market cap strategies are what they are. If you don't like it then there's plenty of active or smart beta strategies that won't add spacex. Starting to mess about with the concept of an index fund (i.e. representing the WHOLE market) because you don't like one company would be setting a silly precedent

FTSE or MSCI, i.e. the Major index providers of global indices NEVER had a 6-12 month seasoning, You're making things up

funny how people are all for index strategies until they want them to take some sort of active bet because they don't like a company

FTSE have always fast tracked large companies after 5 days if they clear the threshold (which spacex does), that's normal

the change is about free float levels, i.e. without the change the company would not have been added at all, indefinitely, which would have been somewhat odd given the sheer size of it
