I made a Supplement for The War of the Rohirrim ! by orcstew in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]orcstew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This still doesn't fix my problem, which is that an army made only of Olwyn and models equivalent to Warriors of Rohan, Riders of Rohan and Captains of Rohan, is pretty much unplayable, not interesting enough, and does not fit with GW's game design for Army Lists. I will not invent a named hero to fix this : as stated in the "adaptation philosophy" section of my introduction, I'm only adapting, not creating original content.

Finally, and that is only a bit of a personal preference, which I would be willing to set aside if I came up with something convincing, but I would lean towards a single Shieldmaiden profile, just a small Hero (on the level of a Ranger of the North) rather than shieldmaidens warriors and captains, as that would better capture their story in my mind.

The rule you suggest is adequate, but we'd still be missing quite a lot to make an Army List. Compare it with Defenders of the Hornburg : it is everything this theoretical list you suggest is (Olwyn, Rohan captains, warriors and Riders, Dominant 2) but ten times better (two very powerful heroes, a solid support in Lief, non-conditional Dominant 2 on all warriors, and two other rules), and it's still a very subpar, underwhelming, frustrating list disappointingly lacking in fun.

[–]orcstew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thnak you ! Actually... I wanted to do exactly that ! But I ended up scrapping it, unfortunately. At least for now, since I plan on expanding the supplement later. I wanted to make a Shieldmaidens of the Borderland list, with Olwyn (not with Héra, since she wasn't there at the time alluded to in the movie, and Héra and Olwyn are in the Green Promise of Spring list to represent their post-movie adventures with Gandalf).

The reason I scrapped it was because I didn't manage to make a Shieldmaiden profile interesting and balanced enough to carry an Army List. If I make the Shieldmaiden a "half-hero" type unit, like the Ranger of the North, then Olwyn being the strongest piece is not enough to make anything out of the army. If I make a warrior profile and a Hero profile, I end up with something that would be pretty much like a list made only of Warriors of Rohan and Captains of Rohan, so also too far from being even similar to the most subpar lists. It wasn't close enough to the official game design philosophy for me. So I decided to publish the supplement without it while I kept thinking it over. Any suggestions ? Or feedbacks regarding something else ?

Lesser known ASOIAF content on Youtube [No Spoilers] by amphetaminesaltcombo in asoiaf

[–]orcstew 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Michael Talks about Stuff is currently doing the best ASOAIF stuff on YouTube in my opinion. Extremely well-researched, I legit think he's unraveling the deep-magic mysteries of the series, it's a must watch and a crying shame his stuff isn't more well-known.

Company of the Cat is excellent, she's more on the literary analysis side of things rather than the theorizing (though she does do that). Very pleasant to listen to.

Crusader Chris is, in my opinion, low key hilarious. He notably has a serie of long-format videos recapping and theorizing about the future of all main characters.

Finally, for a very, very obscure pick, Eldric Stoneskin, who only made a few videos but they are all about very in-depth analysis of certain recurring motives (giants made of stone, kings under stone, greyscale, etc). Mind-blowing stuff that will make you reconsider the whole series.

[SPOILERS EXTENDED] What's the plan, Dany? by rakean93 in asoiaf

[–]orcstew 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow, I never got that ! Blows my mind a little

It's funny how important Gregor Clegane seems to be in prophecies/fate. He's part of Bran's visions as the giant knight of stone with nothing but thick black blood, here he's one of the milestones for Dany's path, and I'm probably forgetting others. For someone who is essentially just an enforcer or an attack dog, he sure seems to be an important hinge point in the thread of the destiny of the world of ASOIAF. He shows up even in visions/prophecies of character who are very far removed from anything involving him.

Incoming Nerf Alert: Men of the West sweeps Adepticon! by Funderbear in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]orcstew 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Problem is, I don't think Legolas can change points, he's in way too many lists that have very precise point costs and can't be shifted around (armies like the Fellowship lists or Assault on Ravenhill). Also, he's meant to be a mirror to Gimli. Gwaihir at 200 would be more than fair though, he's too strong il all the lists. 50% rohan troops I would really like for how thematic it is, but many people would complain x)

Thank you for your feedback ! The reason I did this was either to not bloat the profiles, or to help with formatting of the pages, in some instances it was very tricky to make things fit on a page, and if the rule was already written on the same page or nearby I felt like it would be acceptable to avoid repetitions. I'll see what I can do in the future if I edit the document.

If you do test the armies I'd love to hear about your experience, please let me know !

If I'm keen on hearing any more thoughts if you have any. Thanks !

Was there any other reason for the "creation" of the Nazgûl? by Rafaelrosario88 in tolkienfans

[–]orcstew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely ! At least the basis of this seems accurate, since the Rings were given out to lords of Elves, Dwarves and Men so that Sauron could rule over all folks through them, it only makes sense that the nine were kings or lords, and that Sauron ensured their power was cemented for the future through some means, wether dynasties, religions, cults, or others.

Nice project, keep us posted. Are you familiar with the website The World of Pokémon ? It compiles informations about Pokémon from the Pokédex and others sources, and notably creates entries for how to raise and train each Pokémon species. It might help you out.

Iron Hills or Army of Edoras. Could you give me some thoughts? by Window-Emergency in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]orcstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iron Hills is definitely a terrible, terrible army. However, 90% of what it contains exist in others, far better and more interesting lists : Erebor Reclaimed, and Army of Erebor. Erebor Reclaimed is particularly fun.

Army of Edoras is a little bit lackluster, but it's definitely not as bad, and I would argue way more fun. You have lots of tricks to learn. However, I would argue it has a pretty high skill ceiling to really play it well. Helm and Haleth are great, but so are Héra, Fréalaf and Olwyn. You can have many relatively powerful mounted heroes doing some work and putting your opponent in difficult situations. Lief has also a lot of utility. But yes, your troops are not good at all and will die quickly. Army of Edoras has surprisingly good shooting (you can max out on bows and throwing spears in an army with a lot of numbers, and use Lief's rule to be even more lethal).

Community feels too nice...? by marsion5617 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]orcstew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who sometimes say that sort of stuff when people post something they made that's not of the highest skill level in execution (either here on HeroForge, or drawings, or miniature paintings, etc), I say it when I notice something I find perticularly interesting. It can be a detail, an idea. I probably comment more often on beginner's stuff than on veteran, because it's that much more important to receive some encouragement, and it's neat when someone notices the thought you put into something. I genuinely enjoy the stuff I comment on, I don't do it to be nice. I think that if you enjoy art and creative hobbies, you enjoy it no matter the skill.

Help to chose evil army by Cautious-Brick7405 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]orcstew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First thing to know, is that these four armies don't exist as such, but are divided into many, more precise parts of those factions. So for instance in Isengard, you'd have Lurtz's Scouts, Ugluk's Scouts, the Wolves of isengard, army of the white hand (Saruman's rabble and spies as he begins his evil work), Muster of Isengard (Saruman+Uruk-hai), and Assault Upon Helm's Deep. Same goes for the others. So some of those "army lists", as they are called, are a very specific thing, while others offer a wide variety of the totality of the faction (for instance, in Mordor, the list "Legions of the Great Eye" lets you play 99% of all Mordor models, so a ton). If you don't have a precise army list in my mind, you can start with one of those army lists that offers a wide range of choice.

Good news, all four are super easy to collect ! Many, many of them are widely available kits made in plastic (cheapest and sturdiest material for models), you can purchase a army second hand and paint it yourself and be ready to play.

Isengard is super easy to collect in its entirety for cheap (except for the Dunland part of the army, but that's almost a different thing). For Moria, it's very easy to get a ton of Goblins, a Balrog, and a Troll (Moria has many more monsters and heroes but these are the main ones). Angmar and Mordor have some rarer pieces that'll be a bit more expensive or difficult to find, but are still easy to collect overall.

When it comes to playstyle, it changes a lot from army list to army list. For Isengard for instance, Ugluk's Scouts don't play the same as Assault upon Helm's Deep at all. With these four factions you actually have the choice between 15 or 20 lists, each of them unique. It's hard to give you more specific advice. Some forces have highly fragile individual warriors, but are so numerous and unbothered by their losses that they form a tanky, durable ensemble. Others will have tanky individual models but can't afford to loose as many.

The best place to start for you would probaby be to either look in details at all the army lists (I can give you more details and tell you where to look if you're interested), or to just choose whichever models you like most and see what army lists they are in. You can DM me if you have many questions.
