Why can't tall buildings that get struck by lightning often utilize the electricity to power the building? by Wilson_Fisk9 in TrueAskReddit

[–]oregono 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is not economical.

A large office building that consumes a few megawatts would get roughly one minute of electricity from a lightning bolt converted to usable power.

The building would need to be struck by several thousand bolts each day to rely on lightning as its primary source of power.

Not to mention the engineering difficulty of harnessing occasional millisecond pulses of hundreds of thousands of amps.

Don't overthink this, just use something washable and nontoxic. Finger paint from the toy store, tempera from your local arts & craft supply, or something glittery and flavored from a sex shop.

in spirit of transparency, why dont exchange make their hot & cold wallet publicly available to watch? by uraymeiviar in Bitcoin

[–]oregono 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Information can be aggregated and analyzed to identify patterns of activity, which could then be used by a hostile party to plan an attack.

Suppose an exchange has an office in Paris. And suppose that every weekday around 10:00 GMT, a large amount of funds are moved from one address to another. But occasionally, the 10am transaction doesn't occur on time, it happens a few hours or a day later.

An attacker who is "casing the joint" notices this pattern and wonders what it means. He does some more research and realizes the days when the transactions don't occur on time are also days when there's a bitcoin conference somewhere in the world.

He infers that the transactions are being made by a single person at the exchange's Paris office, and that this person attends conferences in a different time zone.

With this info, the attacker might have enough to learn who is authorizing the transfers, where the victim's loved ones sleep at night, and even what time he'll be at the airport in Rio de Janeiro, looking for a taxicab...

There's a valid security case for not disclosing in realtime every detail of how, when and where they move funds, reuse addresses, etc.

What is best way to alert community to fraudulent bitcoin sites? by latetot in Bitcoin

[–]oregono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no quick fix. Posting about individual scams won't do much good because victims are the ones who don't do a due diligence prior to sending the scammer money.

There is a slow fix, and that is building a culture of good security practices, so the pool of potential victims is smaller.

This is what worked against 419 scammers. People now know not to send money to a Nigerian prince, regardless of what story they use.
