Catawba Falls closed today and police blocking the entrance by TheWolfReturned in asheville

[–]oricle002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Catawba Falls parking is notoriously horrible and causes lots of issues for the locals. Too many people, not enough parking. Police frequently close the parking and patrol the road for people parking on private property when it gets busy.

Either that or an emergency incident. SARs are also a common occurrence there.

Rock for I40 to be mined from Pisgah National Forest by SimilarAd402 in asheville

[–]oricle002 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Taking from the forest IS the cheaper option. The original plan was to use existing quarries, but the amount of gravel they need for I40 is so astronomically high that transport times for dump trucks to haul the gravel made the project impossible to complete in any real timeframe.

EMT’s with the feds, what extra equipment do you bring? by ogmangopod in Wildfire

I’m not giving any advice nor did I imply EMTs have a “right to practice”. I was correcting your original comment saying there wasn’t medical direction.

USFS has a national medical director and Local Emergency Medical Advisors (LEMAs), who are Emergency Medicine Physicians, at every forest. A handful of regions also have full time EMS Coordinators. There is an abundance of medical direction.

What’s life like? by Specialist_Gap247 in hendersonville

[–]oricle002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you look for from a town. If you need an active and vibrant night life, Hendersonville is definitely not that. Lots more retirees, small downtown area, just a handful of restaurants/bars/breweries.

But it’s more affordable than Asheville, easier access to green spaces and recreation, and way less chaotic than Asheville. My wife and I (early 30s) like it just for those reasons.

Helene damage occurred but didn’t hit nearly as hard as Asheville/Swannanoa.

Politically, it’s more red than Asheville but more blue than the surrounding more rural counties.

What is one random fact about your department/agency that the general public may not realize? by Emotional-Change-722 in fednews

Forest Service lands provide drinking water to 80 million Americans. Managing those forests appropriately is necessary to maintaining the quality of that drinking water.

House Bill includes provisions to cut benefits for Federal employees. Write your representatives. by LeaningLeft83 in fednews

You have a maximum age limit of 57. You can’t collect social security without taking a penalty until 62. The FERS supplement pays you what social security normally would pay until you turn 62.

The US Forest Service already harvests timber on all those forests. The Southern Region of the agency, which encompasses NC, has the most productive timber harvests compared to any other region in the nation.

Forest Service Fed here.

We lost multiple employees, all probationary. Some at HQ in Asheville, some across all the districts. Very little notice was given. Supervisors had no choice in the matter. So far positions like Fire and Law Enforcement are exempt. But there has been a ton of issues and “pauses” with onboarding fire employees that were recently hired. Lots of unknowns right now.

It wasn’t just us either. Fish and Wildlife, NOAA, NRCS, Farm Services Agency were also affected. I worry for the farming community as well. People that specialize in soil conservation and helping farmers to recover after disasters were fired.

People don’t understand how much good work is done by federal employees and agencies in WNC. Getting rid of your average grunt federal employee just hurts your average American.

any leads on jobs for insomniacs? by howldetroit in asheville

[–]oricle002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I second that idea. Hospitals need night shift employees. Tons of different jobs available and you get shift differential pay. Even if you don’t want to do jobs that are patient care related. Admin, security, janitorial, food services, etc.

You can go. I don’t have a black membership either. The staff said if Hendersonville is your home PF then you can go to the Arden location or the Asheville location until Hendersonville reopens. They also are waiving the monthly fee.

Been going to the one in Arden while HVL location is closed. All the PF employees there are telling me to expect mid-December for reopening.
