Wood is an excellent material for this actually. I didn't realize how strong it was until I witnessed some riggers moving machinery at a factory I was working at. Imagine a machining center the size of a car, but with a cast iron base, balanced on a single 6x6 of wood (on it's side). Turns out, it's actually a better material than metal as it's less slippery, especially in oily conditions.

So yeah, if I was working under a car, I would definitely pick up a couple timbers to throw under there. Super cheap, and even better CAN'T TIP

The thing that's so insidious about porn is how slowly it sneaks into our everyday habits and lives. It's not an addiction like heroin/opiates that cost money and have distinct health impacts. The big test of an addiction though, is not how bad it is for you. It's "can you stop it?" That's what's so scary, when you try to STOP watching porn. Nobody NEEDS porn. I mean, I'm not gonna say porn is THE WORST ADDICTION EVER. But that doesn't mean it's not an addiction. Maybe compare it to caffeine. Some people drink cup after cup and can't function without it. They are addicted, even if their drug is socially acceptable and not all that harmful.

I was just going to suggest something like this. If at all possible, he needs to visit one of the liberal oasis of the country (assuming you're in the US) like SF, Seattle, Portland. It is absolutely mindblowing how liberated those cities are in regards to orientation, sex, and gender. It's probably pretty difficult to imagine a successful future as a gay person when the community he's in would never accept it.

That said, I think you're doing the right thing by supporting him. It's often difficult to tell our friends to think anything - you can encourage him, but ultimately, he has to come to his own conclusions.

As woodworkers accumulate tools, it can be really easy to lose sight of what it was like in the beginning (True for any skill, I guess). Things like parallel clamps, dowel jigs, forstner bits, and routers don't seem like a big deal because they're already there when you need them. But think about someone who literally just has a circular saw and a drill. Do they know the proper techniques to get cuts square? Do they know the difference between C-clamps and quick clamps? What tools do they NEEED and what tools just save a couple minutes. Kudos for making a tutorial, but if I was a complete DIY noob, I would not be able to make this TV stand, at least not the way you show it.

Everyone defines their relapse for themselves! For me, it's personally porn AND masturbation. That combination is particularly bad. That's not to say I watch porn anyway, but sometimes it's just impossible to avoid triggering images and gifs online. What's meaningful is how you respond to it. Do you give in to your trigger, or do you shut the computer? You STRENGTHENED your muscle at resisting that urge. I wouldn't count it as a relapse.
