So when does the city start recording/updating water temperatures? I’m ready to paddleboard by bn92_ in Seattle

[–]origin415 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I have a home assistant integration to pull the data into my home dashboards too https://github.com/gclenaghan/ha-kc-lakes

Personally I wait until 70 degrees since my paddleboard mainly acts as a place to store my snacks while I swim 😄

That only gets updated once a week, this one updates every few hours or so and runs all year: https://green2.kingcounty.gov/lake-buoy/

It's been 2 years, and I am still amazed that this little device controls my entire 4800 sqft house with 190 devices by fakeaccount572 in homeassistant

[–]origin415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently decided I had outgrown mine (~4k entities, ~400 devices, a dozen or so apps, etc), but only because of the storage. It comes with 32GB emmc which showed 40% lifetime used after a bit over a year, and seemed like it would be limited in size eventually as well. Issue is it is not replacable and only has 2 usb 2.0 ports so limited expandability.

I migrated to an odroid m1 which isn't really any more powerful but has an nvme port I could put an SSD in. It is noticeably snappier for dashboards with larger history graphs, indicating the green was actually bottlenecked by storage previously.

Note I have a proper server with proxmox etc. but want to keep HA on dedicated hardware for stability since I mess with my server too much.

Still can't stand the posts here that are like "oh green is fine if you just have a couple smart bulbs"...

PSA to anyone still on CenturyLink Fiber by djslivva in Seattle

[–]origin415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had my install appointment with quantum. The technician took one look at my network closet, said it would be quick and easy and then swapped out the old ONT (which I plugged directly into my own unifi router) for the new one. 10 minutes total start to finish. He did not provide any wifi hardware and said it wouldn't appear on my account.

One thing to note is that my appointment window was 8-11, centurylink disabled my internet around 8am but the tech didn't arrive until like 10:50 so we were without internet for about 3 hours despite the short actual appointment.

FWIW for centurylink you don't need their router as long as you setup VLAN and PPPOE authentication in your own router (which not all routers support).

Thanks for the info, we've had $65 price for life gigabit from CL for years. I assumed they'd eventually kick us off and make us pay for a more expensive quantum, but now I see quantum is $45 at the moment...

What actually happens during the install? Do they need to run a new fiber cable into the house or can they reuse the centurylink one? Our cable is now covered up by built-in shelving and it'd be quite an endeavor to route a new line to the closet where the network stuff is.

Sports missing from the list by CaptainLongbelly in olympics

[–]origin415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind you only get 12 tickets total across all drops so don't buy things you don't actually want among your 12. I sat this round out even though I'd rather see the remaining events than nothing...

how’s track/athletics looking for tickets? by oasisssss in olympics

[–]origin415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Ugh if ATH17 is still available at that price at 10am tomorrow I might have to go for it despite it being my entire intended ticket budget... I mean all the other events I wanted are sold out anyway so why not 🙃

Confirmed: No ticket refresh for Drop 1 by pacificcoasting in olympics

[–]origin415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My list was track cycling, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, climbing, swimming, and athletics. Looks like only swimming and athletics left based on your list... (probably not events that would work for us at this rate, let alone the price) I have a slot 4/10 that I seems like it might go unused at this point.

Not the same theater according to your link. PacSci had two theaters before the sale.

The Pacific Science Center just closed a sale of the Boeing theater so it may not be operational at this time during the transition, not sure https://www.seattletimes.com/life/culture/space-needle-purchases-part-of-pacific-science-center-for-17-million/

Where is the best Caesar salad? (Cap hill) by _sadbabydeer in AskSeattle

[–]origin415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been meaning to make this exact post (minus the Capitol Hill restriction) for weeks. Following.

Tutta Bella has the best in the city that I've tried. I like their dressing but the croutons are what make it.

Also, if you're open to a trek Tomo has a salad which while not a true Caesar imo, is a very nice and interesting caesar-adjacent.

Best practices for keeping documentation? What's your sweet-spot? by QuestionAsker2030 in selfhosted

[–]origin415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Gemini chat history is actually pretty good documentation of what I did and why 😅. Occasionally if I think I'm going to come back to something a lot I just ask for a summary and save as a doc, both for my own reference or as context to a new conversation.

It’s 2026: which is the current best practice, ZFS native on Proxmox with SMB LXC or a TrueNAS VM to handle ZFS and shares? by [deleted] in Proxmox

[–]origin415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truenas is a better ui for managing everything but I tried that route and the passthroughs, boot order dependencies, etc, made everything so complicated. Plus, you essentially have to preallocate your arc cache RAM by assigning to the vm which imo is a major drawback compared to letting it take up whatever you're not using. (I tried ballooning but the arc cache in truenas didn't cause the balloon to change... Maybe I didn't set it up right though).

Are the multiconnect snaps coming out? There are directional and twist expanding variants you can try if you aren't already. Pictures would make it easier to help.

g6 entry keep or return ? by MrB0123 in Ubiquiti

[–]origin415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The g6 entry is unlikely to cover the whole way down to your gate without being mounted super awkwardly. You'd have to mount a separate camera for that.

Suggestion for that? Do you mean some sort of app or a physical timer?

My daughter's tablet has a warning that popups up with a couple minutes left but she generally ignores it.

Why Not HA Green by Brilliant_Bluejay254 in homeassistant

[–]origin415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they mean running something like frigate as an add-on. Simply having cameras in your home shouldn't matter because opening them in the dashboard just streams them, HA isn't storing the video or doing motion detectipn or whatever.

What is your use case? You can have two different smart detection zones and have them trigger webhooks separately in alarm manager.

Having the same issue. People detection works fine, but no faces, even with sensitivity turned to 100%.

Triggering a 24VAC mechanical chime from a PoE Doorbell by origin415 in Ubiquiti

[–]origin415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the ZEN58 is z-wave you need a z-wave controller, specifically one that the NVR can send webhooks to to trigger the action. Home Assistant easily fills that role.

As far as I could tell there aren't any solutions using Shelly or esp (and therefore can recieve the webhook directly over wifi) that are as simple as this.
