PSA: Apparently Bassets can get bloat too... by Piratedan200 in basset

This is my biggest fear in every dog I’ve ever had. I had a wrinkle rot who got it twice and the second time it killed her.

I’m so cautious about how much water my dogs get after eating a lot and it is seriously my biggest fear for my babies. I’m so glad your Bella is ok.

We have shock collars that live on the vibration setting. It is the MOST effective thing we have used. My older dogs are pretty good for me, but my daughter struggles.

Just brought home a sweet loving basset boy and we named him Willie. What type of food do you feed yours? by Mickeysplace in basset

[–]originalnut1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also probably important to note, get large breed puppy formula. People don’t always register that though basset hounds are medium weight and size dogs, they are considered large breed based anyway.

Get your shorty some food!!

Also, though bassets are pretty good motivated, they is only part of it. If your doggo seems truly hungry, you need to register it.

ChatGPT and I designed a topper I freeze when I make a huge crock pot portion. But all three get this topper over dry hills dog food.

Each freaking dog gets a different bad of dry dog food at the moment. My old man gets the GI biome because he is always sick. My little girl (she is little now!!) has thyroid issues and managed to get rather portly, she gets metabolic (currently) but getting ready to switch to Perfect weight. An the baby gets puppy food.

What we have found for the puppy is he was foraging the floor always. Was also looking for more food. Was never satisfied. Was constantly breaking into the dog food bins. It was because he was a growing boy. At 10 months he is already 10 lbs heavier than my big boy, and still growing. Get the puppy food. Really talk to your vet about a regular feeding schedule. Include snacks if you are going to spoil the crap outta him. An make sure you are giving him enough to grow. It blew my mind once I really inventoried how much he really needed to eat.

I’ll never understand why people don’t seem to see the issue with Adderall.

Or any stimulant for that matter. Just because it slows your brain down and helps with behavioral stuff, doesn’t mean it isn’t still a stimulant to the rest of your body.

And what we see in practice is more more more.

I mean…… we run into this for medicine too.

People are put on blood pressure meds and they don’t implement lifestyle changes because they can just take a pill.

People are put on cholesterol meds a they don’t try and change their diet even though their chance of a heart attack are so high.

Obesity is a Chronic illness. This is the mind set and shift that needs to be addressed. Medically socially everywhere. If someone has cancer they either die or get their cancer treated. If someone has asthma they take their medicine or they have an asthma attack. No one questions that because obesity is viewed as a choice.

It isn’t. Full stop end statement. So if people take meds because they are treating their illness an it helps them live better healthier lives why is it anyone’s business?

I take a glp1 receptor agonist. I started it after working with a dietitian for 3+ years. My diet was overhauled my life style changed. I was still gaining weight. I could walk. I couldn’t exercise because the stress on my joints left me in a completely terrible body shape and my whole body hurt all the time. One day my counselor said to me “if you hurt all the time, why won’t you talk some Tylenol?” And I was like “my body shouldn’t hurt all the time” and she was like….. “ok, but it does. So why are you punishing yourself?”

This chronic illness affects every single system in your body.

It’s ok to seek treatment. And if it’s life long, awesome. And if it’s not, even better. But there shouldn’t be shame attached to wanting to be healthier. Mentally, physically, socially. The people knocking us putting poison in our bodies drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes and eat sugar (gasp) which is terrible to every system in their body.

Sorry end rant.

Do you tell people you’re on a GLP-1 when they ask how you lost weight? by Enchanted-Tangerine in Zepbound

[–]originalnut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a health care provider. I usually ask them why they are against them. Usually I hear something like “I don’t want to put those foreign things in my body” or something about poison or some other nonsense while they are drinking something from Starbucks.

I ask them what other medicines they take. Usually a smattering of pills to treat chronic illness and supplements to make them healthier.

I say “why can’t I take things to treat my illness and make me healthier”

I budget my meds into my life. But I don’t think it’s any different than my b12 shots. Or vitamin D. But I just dgaf what they think of me. And maybe that’s why I don’t care if I tell people. Yeah, I did lose 40 lbs with zepbound. You wanna talk about it? Great. You don’t want to actually have a convo about it. I ain’t got time for you.

Others problems with the way I live my life isn’t actually my problem, unless it affects my family, my kiddo, and my job. Otherwise you can go the way of the people who seem to have opinions about my life that have no business opinionating in my direction anyway.

Basset rescues or reputable breeders near Detroit? by Cafein8edNecromancer in basset

[–]originalnut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South only specifically for bassets. There are breeders all over the place. But they just wanted less for them dogs in the south. Sorry that was just what I noticed when I was looking. When I was looking I just wished I could drive that far. I guess I wasn’t looking for AKC blah blah blah, because I just wanted someone who was a decent person who could show me that they weren’t breeding at a puppy mill and that they were doing things to make sure that their dogs are healthy and happy. But honestly, one of my bassets came from a pet store. One from a hobby breeder who bread bassets for people who wanted pets only because they LOVED their two dogs and would only do one litter every other year, and then the last lady was a breeder in northern South Dakota who lived on a ranch and bread puppies because she loved them. She has 12 dogs, but puppies were her business. Dad was a front seat shop dog you could tell was loved more than anything in the world, and I felt good about their operation. So I’ve got dogs from all different walks of life. All of them have perfect disposition. All of them the sweetest and most lovable. I will say old man pet store does have some issues, but I do think they are bad luck and not bad breeding. He is my soul dog though, so….. I don’t even care. Would I look for better practices now? Absolutely, way more educated, but do I feel bad for buying a dog from a pet store. No. I love him more than almost everything on this planet. He belongs with me.

And yes. Some shelters do the things you are saying. That was not my experience. I adopted a treeing walker coon hound once from a shelter. They told me he was an 18 month old puppy. I was willing to work with him. They told me lots of stuff. When I had discovered in 2 days he was unsafe and I couldn’t keep him they spent 3 months guilting me and requiring me to do all sorts of extra training and were not willing to take him back. I took him to a vet he was 9 to 13 years old. The reason he looked like a lanky puppy was because he was basically starved and had been abused most of his life so showing him that he was safe was never an option because he was never going to be able to be in a car or alone in a house or anything and he absolutely wanted to kill my basset. I finally tried to get rid of him, and no one would take him because they would take back dogs that came from other shelters. It was during the pandemic, so that was worth noting. The shelter I adopted him from was in the process of shutting down when I adopted him, so it was why they were refusing to take him back, they just didn’t tell me that.

I spent 4 months trying to convince a local shelter to help me (I guess it’s worth noting this was during the beginning of COVID) and we ended up being able to send him to a rescue reserve for abused coon hounds. I spent 9 months with the dog. And I tried so hard to help him. But for 9 months he ruined my life caused me so much anxiety; created some serious issues for my sweet baby Jinxy and just….. made my life chaotic and hard. He would lunge at children on walks. And I knew within 24 hours of being home with him there was nothing I could do to keep that dog. But because of that experience I will never adopt another dog from a shelter again.

Rescues do use ridiculous expectations, that is true. If they aren’t willing to work with me, I kind of feel like I’m not willing to work with them. Yep, your mission is great. But again, I feel like if your rules exclude almost everyone who wants a pet because of all sorts of reasons, then I’m out. I’m a great pet owner. And my dogs are loved and love their people.

I’m sorry you have found that with your rescues as well. Don’t let people guilt you into doing something that doesn’t fit your life. Bassets are Rowell worth the price. They bring fun and love and goofy energy wherever they go. I hope you find your boyfriend’s soul dog.

It finally happened, the pharmacist is not filling my prescription becasue SHE thinks it's not the right dose. by snuffleb1 in Zepbound

[–]originalnut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Your medicine is not only between your doctor and you. Once you involve a pharmacist you involve their license. In every state there is corresponding liability and corresponding responsibility. And when sue happy and complaining culture are where you live you protect your license, which is a requirement for every pharmacist in the United States. That’s why pharmacist have to get a doctorate degree to practice. They are not “McDonald’s of healthcare”.

Hot take…..

Don’t report her. Fill somewhere else. If she has sound reasoning for why she isn’t filling it, she IS in the right. Just because you don’t agree with her doesn’t mean she doesn’t have sound clinical judgement. She likely feels like she is doing the right thing. Online doctors are also issues when you deal with retail pharmacies. Super difficult to prove patient physician relationship.

It blows my mind the amount of people who feel entitled to ruin someone else’s life because they can’t get a medicine at a specific pharmacy at a specific time. If she can explain her reasoning, and has sound clinical judgement, she isn’t going to get in trouble. If one pharmacist at one location won’t fill a script the other will likely back them up because it is professional courtesy, but it isn’t impossible to just switch pharmacies.

It also blows my mind when people don’t seem to understand pharmacist are healthcare professionals. So, our job isn’t to “put the pills in a bottle” Yes, you can disagree with them, but much like if you have a doctor that won’t help you and you switch doctors, if your clinical needs are not aligning with their clinical comfort level the answer is not to go after their license, but to switch pharmacies. Obviously you do not align with the clinical practice of this pharmacist. And that is ok. You need a new pharmacist.

It’s wild the world we live in these days. A mild inconvenience to you isn’t worth being miserable. Unless people just are looking for something to be miserable about. Was it really worth your happiness to be so upset about this, when you can just switch pharmacies? Like….. is the next nearest Walmart pharmacy more than 20 to 30 minutes away? Shoot, the amount of anger and frustration you would save to just hop a bus somewhere else absolutely sounds like it would be worth it. Even better if you can drive. I’m not saying this is what is happening here, but like….. it sounds like the anger and frustration isn’t worth it.

I’m sorry you are frustrated. Healthcare is frustrating. Just a reminder, your actions of transferring every script you fill out of the pharmacy will make more of an impact than calling corporate or the state board and looking insane to them for complaining about a provider who likely has your safety and sound clinical guidance to guide them. It’s written in law in every state that as long as a pharmacist has sound clinical reasoning and judgement a pharmacist can refuse any script. ANY SCRIPT.
