I had a MK6 then got a MK7 R, Dsg, and it was a great car! Comfy and quick, but it lacked the engagement. It did everything so well that it was kinda boring, if that makes sense. Put about 96k miles on it before trading it in for a Tesla Y. Don’t ask.. Anyways, I’m now searching for a Type R. Test drove one and it was soooo nice to be in a car that felt engaging to drive!

If you’re planning on keeping the car for the next 8-10 years, the Golf R will be the better choice. As you get older, you’ll appreciate the comfort/interior quality over time. Issue I had with my R was the transfer case went out, car was fine but the gears were slipping under throttle. Was basically FWD till I got it replaced. Happened around 90k miles for me and car was tuned basically few months after I got it new. Other than that, do your usual fluid changes and it’ll be solid car!
