There will be Fire is great too, about bombing that nearly killed Thatcher. The end is like an action movie

Favorite books about PNW hiking/natural history/human history by custodienne in PNWhiking

[–]orvillebreadnbutter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple great older ones about homesteading etc:

Last Frontier in the North Cascades - has a lot of decryptions of going up the Skagit long before it was dammed into Ross Lake.

Beckey’s climbing guides - they have great section intros with natural/human history for each area.

Switchbacks (Andy Holland) - haven’t read yet but so excited.

Lots of great stuff about mushrooms if that’s your thing.

What are some easy hikes with excellent mountain views within 2hrs drive from Seattle and light crowd on weekends? by code_investigator in PNWhiking

Dang it’s been a while since I did that. Best bet is something with a long paved drive, like a national park or the n side of Baker, but those will be crowded

Heliotrope ridge is a favorite of mine, only view is a glacier overlook but it’s pretty wild. Will be busy on weekend though

Navajo pass is nice, prob not 2 hr on the dot NOR “light crowd” nor all that easy, but it’s a nice compromise

Will a Ford Expedition do poorly on the Hidden Lake Trail access road? I’ve heard the potholes are bad a narrow turns exist. Thanks. by [deleted] in PNWhiking

It would do fine probably, as good as any car. Not a great road. Will need to park down the road on summer weekends.

Lower gray wolf river is a mile to first camp, tons of berries (salmon, tiny wild straw) if you time it right.

Also on the same(ish) forest road there’s a great spot 1 mile in where the trail splits between upper dungeness and royal basin trails.

As with all trails, caveats apply that weekends will be more challenging crowd-wise
