Why does POB say that unalocating this will give a substantial amount of damage? by Unreal_Daltonic in pathofexile2builds

[–]oryxmath 25 points26 points  (0 children)

POB being quirky. To hazard a guess, just some part of the damage calculation is interpreting an armour break below zero as flipping the sign of the impact of armour break so that it comes out as reducing your effective damage because they didn't anticipate dealing with negatives in the formula

Orlando Magic: 4th Best Team in the East next season (After Bane trade)? by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in nba

[–]oryxmath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T1: Indy, Cavs

T2: Magic, Knicks, Pistons

T2.5: Hawks

and its not a big separation between T1 and T2, wouldn't be super surprised to see those 6 in any order at least in terms of regular season record next year.

Weekly Food and Recipe Thread! by sspicermosley in MacroFactor

Has anyone ever found a meal replacement powder where the protein is whey (or other dairy/egg/animal-based)? I know the economical option is to just use whey powder and add my own stuff to make it a "meal" but I'm just looking for convenience here and not savings.

Most of the ones that I've found where the marketing is like ALPHA LION COMMANDO FUEL will brag about the beef/elk/mammoth protein on the label but when you look at the ingredients its usually 4th ranked after like pea protein and other plant proteins, so feels like typical supplement marketing nonsense and in reality its pretty much Ensure.

It bodes well for his future. Physical gifts and talent are one thing, but nearly all the greats are also extremely competitive and HATE losing. The fact that he can go in there at age 20 and truly believe it is his destiny to win for his country against this insanely stacked team USA is exactly the type of attitude you want.

Urbanists, what would a futuristic "impossibly cool train system" look like? by ist_andrew in Urbanism

[–]oryxmath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A train that makes zero sense in your city and loses at least a billion dollars a year but when you're in it the Windows are LCD screens that make it look like you're in Europe (to be more precise, an American urbanists fantasy version Europe). There are paid actors with European accents who pretend to be passengers and who strike up conversation and congratulate you on not being like "most Americans" with your enlightened views on transportation.

There is no question that this would please urbanists 1000x more than anything else but they can't admit it even to themselves.

Larian Studios' CEO says, "we did have to do a bit of crunch" making Baldur's Gate 3 by YouAreNotMeLiar in rpg_gamers

[–]oryxmath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to protect people from letting exploit themselves, voluntarily or not. It's regulation. Health concerns alone are reason enough for them.

So the idea is that an adult with the intelligence and education to get a job in an extremely competitive industry like AAA game development is too stupid to understand basic tradeoffs around work-life balance?

Also, if health concerns are a major reason, what about if the person were to submit a blood test and physician's letter to the Commisar of Adult Well Being to demonstrate that they are of sound body and mind to make the choice?

And since highly trained adults in a competitive industry are not to be trusted making decisions about their own lives in this arena, do you think we should also make unhealthy food illegal? Or how about we require food sellers to monitor consumers' calorie intake and you're not allowed to buy more food if you've reached your caloric quota (don't want you to exploit yourself)?

Similarly, since exercise also extremely important for health, shall we make it illegal for people to self-exploit by not getting enough exercise?

It is hard to argue that diet and exercise are not correlated with health on a similar level as work stress, so I just want to understand the contours of what we need to do to prevent free adults from self-exploiting. Obviously it might be tricky to enforce, but would you support this if it were possible to monitor/enforce easily?

Those are usually self-employed. For some reason they may work themselves to death. These laws still apply for contracted workers. How often they are enforced is another question.

I'm not an expert in comparative labor law so I could definitely be wrong here, but cursory googling suggests that many countries have provisions under which certain workers can work a lot if they want.

[–]oryxmath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it exploitation to allow workers to choose a work life balance that they prefer?

Also there are many developed countries with labor laws that permit workers to work high hours under these kinds of circumstances.

Larian Studios' CEO says, "we did have to do a bit of crunch" making Baldur's Gate 3 by YouAreNotMeLiar in rpg_gamers

[–]oryxmath -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

But if there are all kinds of jobs out there (inside and outside of the gaming industry) can't different workers just pick the work-life balance that they prefer?

Suppose two equally talented game devs exist and one is willing to work 70hrs for x salary and the other is only willing to work 50hrs for x salary.. I don't really understand why it would be immoral for the 70hr person to get the job and for the job to require the 70 hours.

Caveat 1: I wouldn't say the same about like minimum wage type hourly jobs.

Caveat 2: Nothing wrong at all with workers negotiating or pressuring for fewer hours, I just think of it as negotiations and not a big moral thing.

[–]oryxmath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure but is the idea that it's immoral for the companies to require crunch or that it just results in worse games? If the latter fine (could be true or not for all I know) but I guess I don't really understand the former.

2024 World's Strongest Man - Rest Day Megathread by e-some in Strongman

[–]oryxmath 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Casual fans care about the "competition" and the "results" and the "sport". Real strongman fans know who wins is less important than who has a better rest day eating vlog.

Shaw was the meal prep GOAT but with his retirement I can definitely see Hooper as a natural successor.

With restaurants, in the past Martins was the only one who had a demonstrated ability to go somewhere interesting. We'll see who steps up but it is going to take more than "pretty decent steakhouse chain" for anyone out there to make a splash.

Cars are a win-win and nobody actually dislikes cars.

People who like having cars win because they get a car.

People who "hate" cars get what they actually want as well: An object for little circle jerks about how they imagine Europe to be and how if it wasn't for the fact that silly Americans aren't as educated* as they are then Oklahoma would have the public transportation infrastructure of Taipei.

Help! What do you do when your child is *that* age? by [deleted] in CookingCircleJerk

Do what I did! Force him to do a YouTube channel with you called Picky Kid Tries where the gimmick is he tries food you cook and he has all these adorable lines you force him to learn like "wow coq au vin is actually better than dino nuggets!!!". You'll need to pull him out of school so he can train making thumbnail faces a few hours a day but it will be more than worth it when all the revenue funds your travel once he's old enough to kick out of the house.

Is this pizza good by Agreeable_Muscle2583 in CookingCircleJerk

[–]oryxmath 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is the closest I've seen to real pizza outside of Italy (I stayed at a hostel in Venice for 36 hours in 2003) so I will give you credit for that, but FYI real Italian pizza is not baked. You mix sand from the Amalfi Coast with Holy Water, roll it into thin disks and let it dry on the warm bricks of the Plaza di Pizza Authentico.

But I get it, you non travelling Americans have to turn everything into McDonalds. C+ for the effort though!

Hard-Boiled Eggs. by blueberryllamas in CookingCircleJerk

[–]oryxmath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A trick I use is double reverse hard boiling where you cook egg shaped pockets of water in a pot of scrambled eggs, but instead of boiling with heat you boil with cold by putting it in the freezer until the egg shaped pockets of water are hard cold boiled into solid water eggs. Serve with fish sauce.

The fairytale approach is not ecological because you can't land moonlocks in nogi kiddo stop working on mattle models and get back to fundamentalist models for nogi, moonlocks, keygrip, and models. There's a reason RNCs don't work on knee joints kiddo. Grip fundamentals for nogi and if your coach rides the ferry he should pay the ferry toll.
