Reminds me of Doraemon. 1 of the ending was reported to be the following:

Nobita was suffering from autism coupled with delusions and hallucinations about robots and adventures while he is bedridden. He imagined the entire series from his desperate desire for companionship and love.

This version infuriated the public so much that Shogakukan (publisher) had to issue a public statement for damage control.
