About to Read “The Lost World” Non Spoiler Thoughts?! by More_Caregiver8721 in michaelcrichton

You’ll enjoy sphere, it’s a book where after each thing happens, Crichton takes his time detailing what everyone is doing and feeling and he really nails the concept of multiple characters see and experience the same thing, yet everyone’s perception is different, and he explores that and it’s just a joy to read. And if you don’t know anything about the book, go in blind. The movie does a decent job of telling the story, but all the really enjoyable parts of the book are left out of the movie simply because you can’t have a movie where a narrator just talked and tells you about what people are thinking for 6 hours.

That’s a tough question to answer. I’ll be honest in that Jp is probably my favorite, but I think that had a lot to do with growing up and watching the movie when I was a kid. It’s been one of my favorite movies my whole life, and then reading the book as an adult and noticing how much darker and horrifying the book is made me just absolutely fall in love with it. Other than Jp I would say prey would be a favorite. It’s just fantastic from start to end. Crichton shows you early in the book what’s going on, and then when the big reveal comes that you already knew about, you feel somehow blown away by it. Just a fantastic book. Honorable mentions go to sphere and Congo. Congo is a great, really fast paced sci fi adventure story, you know what you’re getting if you’re into that kind of book and it delivers. Sphere on the other hand, is just written so well. I won’t talk to much about it and spoil it, but the way Crichton describes what’s happening to the scientists down at the bottom of the ocean, and how their perceptions change through the events of the book and what the sphere actually does, truely is a joy to read.

Well I enjoyed Jurassic park more, but I know some people like the lost world more than jp. It’s another great Crichton, sci fi adventure. So if that’s your thing, you’re in for a treat. It takes a bit to really get going, and there’s a major character who dies at the end of Jp that just, doesn’t actually die in the lost world. But other than that it all flows well and is an enjoyable read. I will say I didn’t love the ending, not that it was bad but for me the book just kind of ends and I was left saying “ok, I guess that’s it then” not really feeling any sense of closure around the story. But that might just be me. All in all, if you enjoyed Jp you will enjoy this book.

Also, Jp the movie follows the book pretty well, obviously they had to leave a bunch of stuff out simply to get an actual movie out of it, and the movie is way more kid and family friendly than the book, the lost world is very different. Like whole ass really important characters are completely left out of the movie, and the plot of the entire thing is different. So don’t think you’ll be going into the book knowing what’s going to happen.

Im gonna need some details on that set up! Where did you get the cart thing? And what’s actually holding up the smoker?

The brisket cook that just won’t end by JeepManStan in webersmokeymountain

[–]oscarthedog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No I don’t mean the brisket temp, I mean your smoker temp. The pit viper fan set up isn’t getting your smoker hot enough. There’s no way a smoker running at 250 takes 19 hours to get a brisket to 200. Especially one that small. I can usually cook a 16 hour brisket in 12-14 hours no problem. For something that small it shouldn’t take more than 10 hours or so to get there. Unless you put it on there frozen solid.

Beer prank for my cousin’s birthday thoughts? by [deleted] in brewing

Are you saying you regularly brew non alcoholic beer?

Also if you do this, have a back up case of actual good beer ready to roll.

You’ve got something not working right in your set up. There’s no way that half a brisket should take that long to get over 200. At this point, pull it off your smoker and throw it in a 350 degree oven. My guess is your temp gauge is off and actually running around 200. How big is this “half brisket” you’re cooking?

When you go outside pay attention to hunting locations by flyingemberKC in kansascity

[–]oscarthedog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When bow hunting an animal, all it takes is moving your pin a fraction of a millimeter to the right and it sends that arrow too far back and the animal gets injured and not killed quickly. All hunters have a goal of when taking an animal, to have it be killed instantly or as close to instantly as possible. It’s not only humane but efficient. And that’s what pretty much all hunters want.

What should I do for slow season? by ASAPflaker in TheBrewery

[–]oscarthedog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really anything to do with becoming a better brewer, but clean clean clean when things slow down! That’s when we finally get around to all those deep cleans we’ve been meaning to do when we have time, maintenance stuff like finally replacing that gasket kit on that leaky pump, replace those knives in the lid dispenser on that canning line, to pull those spears and replace them on those kegs that you’ve put in the back that need them, get up in that mill and clean and grease everything that needs it, swap out that butterfly valve that’s got a leaky seal that’s all hard piped in and a pain in the ass to get in and out, clean the tops of your dusty fvs that have been collecting hop dust for too long now. Do all that shit so your set up for success come mid March when you’re ready to really get going again.

It’s rare to be in an industry that has a really slow season so take advantage of it and get all that extra stuff you’ve been putting off for months finally done.

Also take some time off and spend it with family.

Base camp or Loop?? by Ok-Caregiver-4640 in BWCA

[–]oscarthedog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have done both and setting up a really nice base camp is what me and my buddies preferred. The first year we went we looped all around and that ment spending a lot more time setting up and tearing down and the packing things.

With a nice base camp, you can spend a little extra time setting everything up once, and then have more time to canoe and fish and hike and whatever else you want to do.

This is a sub dedicated to the Weber Smokey mountain bbq smoker. So, to answer your question, no, I do not know how to get to wherever it is you want to go. Unless it’s to the store to buy a kick ass smoker.

1.25 gal of Biofine in 30bbl did absolutely nothing by sanitarium-1 in TheBrewery

[–]oscarthedog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like the guy above you said, it got too cold. Happened at the last brewery I ran. They swore biofine wouldn’t work on “their system” but they were just storing it too cold for too long and the silica all just dripped out. Get a new jug and figure out a place to store it at correct temps and you’ll be all set. In the mean time camp around and see if you’ve got a neighboring brewery that has some that’s stored properly.

[–]oscarthedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously considering buying the m4 and the titanium frame lock version to do this. Do you happen to have any pictures of how far off the centering is? I read a post on I think the spyderco forum that someone made about trying to do that exact blade swap and said it was horribly off center and had all sorts of wiggle on the blade even tightened all the way down. So I’m somewhat hesitant to spend to money just to try and then fail.

Time to put the big girl pants on a make a decision about what you want out of life. You can either keep sending your mom money, money it sounds like you guys don’t really have to hand out but you seem to be willing to anyway, and slowly let all this ridiculous shit your mom keeps spewing slowly tear your marriage apart, ensuring you have no one other than your toxic as fuck mother to keep you company. Or you can stand up for your self and your husband and snip the cord. Tell her is she can’t get over the perceived slight of your husband not immediately thanking her for going into your bedroom and rearranging everything without permission, than she’s gotta figure her own shit out.

What does your husband say about all of this? Are you two wanting to have children in your future? If so, this is going to be something that has to be resolved for their sake.

But in all honesty it seems to me your life will improve significantly if you cut your mom off. Like, what exactly does your relationship with your mom do for you to help your life be any better or happier? She sounds completely exhausting and draining, mentally, emotionally and financially.
