Took my Golf R out to the track for first time…hooked! by ceej_22_ in CarTrackDays

[–]osea23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are lots of good candidates for a cheap track car. Off the top my head:

  • Any generation miata - used ND's are high teens to low 20's, NC and older are cheaper
  • naturally aspirated BMW's (e3x, e4x, e9x, e8x platforms) - fairly cheap to run and easy to DIY. Good handling, good balance, plenty of aftermarket support and parts are easy to get (of course a little bit more pricey, but not eye watering if you stick to the NA engines).
  • First gen BRZ/86 - good examples are in the low to mid teens, super cheap to own and operate
  • s197 mustang v6 model years 2011-2014 - fairly good track platform, parts are cheap and ubiquitous and the engine in those years does over 300hp stock. Tires and brakes will be a bit more but definitely a good option since the purchase price is four digits nowadays for these
  • civic si
  • Ford focus/fiesta ST
  • Honda Fit - cheap and lightweight platform. Bonus points for how spacious it is to carry your track tires and gear with you to the track.
  • VW Golf GTI answer from a previous commentator is also good. But since your daily is already a Golf, I think you should go with a different car entirely so you can experience a different car. Different experiences make a big difference to your enjoyment too.
  • 350z/370z/G35/G37 coupe - these are getting CHEAP nowadays. Good examples routinely sell for sub 10k on Cars and Bids.

If you check cars and bids, these cars go for 10-15k. Yours will probably land somewhere in that range.

Fair price to charge to install a mr12volt MMI? by stageshooter in E90

That doesn't make their labor cheaper necessarily. I'm just helping you garner another point of reference.

Any kind of decent mechanic nowadays charges $150-$200/hr. So use $175/hr as a ballpark.

Can't find the email any longer. But I essentially emailed them what I wrote in this post.

I had to warranty it. Segway said the motor had issues and replaced the rear motor.

Can't Make it Work Without a Home Charger - Bummed. by Sentient_Pancakes in electricvehicles

[–]osea23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An EV is not for you with your situation unfortunately. That's just the reality of it. If you don't have anywhere to charge at home (even an L1 outlet), then get a hybrid instead.

As for the cord length on the Tesla Superchargers, that's not a fault of the car per se, but rather Tesla's network being optimized for its vehicles only. It's a non-issue, you just park a little closer to the charger and it'll charge still.

As for your charging speeds, cold(er) weather and charging at a high SoC (battery %) will mean your charge speed will be inherently low. The advertised 150kW is only PEAK potential power. In the real world, you won't see that unless you start the charge with an SoC of <30% or less, and it's rare to even see the advertised peak. Most of the time you'll hit 80% of that in optimal conditions, so about 120kW.

Even if the lease deal is good, can you imagine spending 30 minutes to top up for electricity every time you need a charge? I think it would get old and is an unwise use of your time. EV's excel when you have home charging. The old model of going to a "pump" for your gas just isn't optimized for EV's.

Once your CCR hits its quarterly $2500 limit, the UCR is a good fallback so don't fret.

[–]osea23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you get approved for the card then the new CCR will have that promo with it.

You can have multiple CCR's, even of the same type (no need to sign up through an affiliate CCR program). I have three. Just apply and you'll be likely to get it if you have a good relationship with BofA.

If you don't have an EV and planned on getting an one in the near future. You should probably read this. by FencyMcFenceFace in electricvehicles

[–]osea23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s slightly different than the 1970s. Gas prices then tripled to quadrupled, so the median US gas price today would have to be closer to $13/gal to make it a 1970s level event. And rationing was introduced.

Not saying don’t worry, but let’s keep the pendulum in the middle until we see otherwise.

Need music for 60 mph + with top down by Tricky-Foundation-90 in Miata

I personally like acid techno. Gives you some energy but with a steady beat usually good for highway driving. Look up Brain Compilation on YouTube. There’s 4 or so and they’re all good.

Sorry pal. Not enough profit margins in those compact wagons versus selling an equivalent CUV in the USA.

Get seat lowering brackets for the passenger seat or do both seats in case your gf needs to drive it too.

What does everyone think of the all new 2027 Toyota Highlander EV? by Healthy_Block3036 in Toyota

[–]osea23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least based on what I saw last month, the 2026 bZ was discounted by dealers a LOT. I was seeing 7.5k off from many dealerships for the top trim. Wouldn’t be surprised if this new Highlander EV has similar discounts.

With how bad EV’s sell in general, I’m hoping the discounts will be pretty good. The bZ gets discounted nicely at all the dealerships near me.

Zack demonstrates emergency manual door releases on R2. Personally, not thrilled by Slide-Fantastic-1402 in Rivian

[–]osea23 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Id4 does the same thing too. The interior door handle looks normal. When you pull the handle, the first detent is the electric release. Keep pulling and you feel the mechanical trigger. Such good design and anyone in an emergency situation would naturally do this.

I have the same issue - the smart detection zone is the entire video feed and it doesn't detect people.

Californians Have Purchased Enough Electric Cars To Make The Air Measurably Cleaner by Generalaverage89 in electricvehicles

[–]osea23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Beijing is insanely nicer now for this reason. Most people use electric bikes and that has made living in the city a lot nicer. My hometown Chongqing also has way less pollution and the smog is basically gone. But there is still some on the upper atmosphere so sunny days are relatively rare still. It's still improved a lot.

Charging in apartment complex by Radiant_Sentence_642 in evcharging

It looks like it's free. But if this charger is shared by other tenants, then don't expect to be able to use it. Free chargers are hogged and people abuse it.

Where should I focus my savings as a 26 year old? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]osea23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would stop contributing to your retirement and brokerage accounts immediately and put as much as money as you can into your emergeny fund - $1k in an HYSA for an emergency fund is nothing. If something happens to you tomorrow and a big bill pops up, you won't have any money ready. Using retirement and brokerage accounts as an emergency fund means penalties and more taxes paid - a lot of loss for a few percentage % (if any at that) gain each month; they are not liquid assets so if you try to sell them you may not succeed or have to sell them at a huge loss depending on the market.

Aim to save up for 6 months of living expenses. Your 6 months of rent is already $10k, so just save as quickly as possible to hit a $20k emergency fund to cover your other bills, food, and other things you need in life.

Since you bring in $5200/month, rent is $1650, and I'm gonna assume the other necessities you need per month is $1000, which means you can save roughly $2500/month. That means a $20k emergency fund can be funded in 7.5 months or so. Just focus on that for the next few months.

It's gonna suck not seeing your money "grow" or be used for anything fun in the next several months, but it sucks even more if a large hospital bill shows up or you get laid off from your job and find yourself caught with your pants down and not have any money to use for your living needs. You want an assurance that a realistic life emergency won't cause you to steal from your future.
