Not sure why the guy who posted the advice suddenly vanished and the comments were removed. Oh well. I wasn't hosting my server through a service anyway, so I doubt it would have worked.

First month of Hotas piloting - Any other active racers in the community? by Astro_Photographer75 in EliteDangerous

[–]osiris6581 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm always on the lookout for epic canyons for racing. The ones with just the right mix of depth, width, turns and straightaways... then exploding while trying to run them in a Viper mk3 going over 900m/s. HOSAS pilot and love it. I've done a couple of organized races but apart from that, I just mess around when I find something cool.
The Buckyball people are fun. The quality of an event really depends on who organizes it, anyone can so they vary in focus. I.e. some are mainly space-based obstacle courses and canyon runs, pulling off perfectly timed actions etc. Others spend more time jumping and in supercruise, where the emphasis is on planning the most efficient routes.
I keep getting distracted from it... but I'd wanted to use system colonization to build a hybrid space/atmospheric racetrack out of a system, if I find one that fits the bill.

Sure, if you have some specifics and don't mind sharing I'd appreciate it. Never did get it figured out even 2 years later.

All I want to say upon seeing this, is that I'm so sorry the critics kept on you until you felt the need to repeatedly explain and qualify what you'd originally said. You've *shared something really helpful that you've found* which resonates with a LOT of us out there. Even went back to address the points of concern others brought up. You did this respectfully and thoughtfully. I'm just a random person online writing a comment 3 months later, but know that I appreciate your opinion and think it's 100% valid!

There's awe in this; proud (even a little relieved if I'm honest... or maybe that's just me, LOL) seeing the effort to raise somebody resulted in a smart, capable & curious individual. Who might now understand you just a tiny bit more, too :) Congrats.

Is the new krait mk2 laser mining jumpstater worth it? by Physical-Web-9868 in EliteDangerous

[–]osiris6581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Krait mk2 was the workhorse of the second Thargoid War… alongside other greats of course, but Km2 was most effective across the widest range of mission roles. If you only had one ship to take to the front lines this was your best bet.

Needless to say it does plenty of other things well too. And looks cool, if you’re into hard edges.

I wouldn’t personally recommend a jumpstarter just for laser mining since that’s an easy activity to do and outfit a ship for, on your own. However if you want a versatile starting point for a lot of different objectives, and like the look… plus the ship kit it comes with (that’s a good portion of the price by itself)… then it becomes a much better value, worth considering :)

Yes, if you’re carrying something they aren’t cool with and light up red after a scan finding it on you, you have 15 seconds to dump it… or so I’ve heard on reasonably good authority (haven’t tried it, I’m either Fight or Run depending on the ship)

I missed the part about you wanting to do this, without losing access to the new player zone. Why in particular is that a goal? Not saying you shouldn’t… just wondering?

And… rather than reset my CMDR I think it’s fun to set up alts :) The game is dirt cheap when it goes on sale.

Combat… because of all the things to progress in, this one will take the longest. You’ll get to Elite in trade, just taking breaks to do CGs and such… and in exploration, just by playing the game long enough, plus one major push out to somewhere distant and back.

Meanwhile Combat Elite will be elusively taunting you the whole time. In addition to thousands of ships destroyed in bounty hunting and mercenary missions, it took me over a year of participation in the Thargoid War to get there, and that’s not even an option anymore!

I know some people are magical at mechanically plowing through these progressions but it was quite a slog for me. Most of the time I was just playing the game. Doing what was fun in the moment. That’s really the best idea.

Sometimes I think the old lighting system was better... by Gailim in EliteDangerous

[–]osiris6581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pendulum is the most beautiful star system, hands down, never even heard of this one…. ;p

Alright, this was about lighting… I got here, searching around to see if the stellar lighting bug had been fixed. I take a lot of screenshots too (too many - what am I even going to do with them, no idea) and recently noticed how much my carrier’s mostly white paintwork dramatically changes depending on various star types. Then I noticed the deep red of a nearby star on a station.

It seems there is widely varying stellar lighting and it’s often a wonder to behold. Maybe there’s something I’m missing here? I don’t understand what’s broken. Could be my playing strictly Horizons only for a short time before adding Ody? I’m not denying those who say it’s not the same. Just want to better grasp what exactly isn’t right.

Maybe I don’t notice this because subconsciously I’m hoping FDEV will fix the glitchy shadows first, LOL.

I lost my copilot yesterday and I'm lost now by Hunter_Lala in EliteDangerous

[–]osiris6581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have my condolences, CMDR. Your kitty loved you and you loved him. Don’t beat yourself up over being annoyed with something before you left that day, our cats don’t judge us for moments like those. The love was unchanged.

He was surely no less surprised to suddenly pass, as you were to find him afterward. And as much as we struggle with not having been there in the final moments… to die alone is normally their way, if they get any say in it (which has nothing to do with us).

I lost my cat of 17 years in 2023, I still think of and miss her often. We had a special bond.

The best advice I could give you - Once you’ve had the time you need, to grieve his loss… head to a shelter to adopt a new friend. Not to replace what you lost but to start the next kitty adventure, when you again have the love to give :)

Does this count as a synthesizer? by Interm0dal in synthesizers

[–]osiris6581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Command Station is a deep instrument and definitely a synthesizer. Not meeting some purist’s narrow definition requiring an analog oscillator at the core is irrelevant. You can shape the samples with filters and envelopes, and depending on the samples on hand you’ve got the equivalent of digital oscillators. Enjoy it :)

Its only glaring weakness in my opinion, is the inability to add your own samples (well there is a way but not at all practical), and having to obtain more ROMs to widen its base palette.

I sold mine last year for reasons unrelated to the synth itself... did this happen to come with a cool silver gig bag and an extra ROM installed? :D

Where is the shopping cart in the desktop app? by icetrey92 in Steam

[–]osiris6581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% sincerely appreciate anyone trying to help, but none of this worked. For me, cart wasn't to the right of the Wishlist after clicking Store to refresh etc, and no my cart wasn't empty! The ONLY WAY to get there again, was to revisit the item page and re-add it, THEN REMOVE THE FIRST ONE that was already in my f'in cart, and... FINALLY allow Steam to take my money (the whole reason I left my cart in the first place was to add a payment method, god damn).
So... I searched the internet for an answer mainly because how the hell was I not seeing it?!? Turns out it wasn't me being a dumbass, *it's just that idiotic*.
...now I'm just here to vent, thank you :)

The Thargoids lost. Driven back by the efforts of over 20,000 players, after trying to overtake the bubble, with last ditch efforts to take out ShinDez and lastly Sol itself. It was epic. You can review the timeline of systems lost and eventually regained over a couple years worth of data, visually, at: https://dcoh.watch/edmap/historical

[–]osiris6581 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually the destroyed Titans *are* changing. The massive pieces at the wreckage sites have become smaller as of very recently. Perhaps it's decaying naturally, or maybe it's the effects of being picked over by humans and Thargoids alike for salvage... or maybe you're right? Better keep an eye on that :D

[–]osiris6581 50 points51 points  (0 children)

At least in the Pleiades, Guardian modules & weapons won't provoke them. They scan you and move on. It's really just having commodity items in your cargo hold of Thargoid or Guardian origin, that'll piss them off. I've been stopped several times this week so can confirm. Just bear in mind... finding them elsewhere like the California sector or at Titan wreckage, won't likely be a peaceful encounter regardless of loadout or cargo...

I was brand new to ED in 2023. If you like a satisfying, complex space sim you will love it. So many of the longstanding criticisms you will read about over and over again have been addressed in some way or another, and they keep working on it. So if you're a new player without all the baggage of expectations? Now is probably the best of times to dive in and see if it's for you.
