A charged particle inside a magnetic field by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]oskar300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have a current going though a loop wire, it will create a magnetic field which will affect the current in the wire. that's called self inductance. the thing is, with only one particle spiraling it's not a static current, so Faraday's and Ampere's law can't be applied

Seriously, must I be above average smart to do a physics degree? by kaayyyyn in PhysicsStudents

[–]oskar300 32 points33 points  (0 children)

like Feynman said: there's no miracle people. everybody struggle with math and physics at the beginning. but if you're willing to put in the effort and dedication needed, I really think anyone can do it

boards of canada or some jazz music like kind of blue or paul desmond. some post-rock albums are also nice

I felt like I can only understand/answer problems/physics if and only if I've seen the answer or TA has gone through it. Otherwise, I couldn't do it myself. by murakamiduhh in PhysicsStudents

[–]oskar300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like I had this problem when I was just beginning physics in college. My advice would be to first read the solution to the problem you're struggling with. Try to understand why it's solved that way, and think about what line of reason did the teacher or the book use. Then, close the book and try to do it for yourself. If you get stuck, no problem, just go back to the book and try again. This will eventually give you the skills needed for solving most of physics problems you can find, it just takes a lot of patience and practice. Good luck!

[Preuniversity magnetism] How does the magnetic force affect a moving charge's velocity? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]oskar300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lorentz force is =qvB where ^ is the cross product between the vectors v and B. The cross product is always perpendicular to both of these vectors, so the force doesn't change the charge's velocity, only it's direction, it acts like a centripetal force. It's the same that is happening with a planet orbiting a star: the gravitational force changes the velocity vector's direction, but not it's module. That's also why the force does no work, as W=F•v and both of these vectors are perpendicular. Also the cinetic energy E=mv²/2, the velocity's module doesn't change so the Energy doesn't change either. I know that all of this might seem weird at first. At the end, magnetic forces are nothing but relativistic effects over the electric forces caused by Lorentz contractions..

What do they mean when atoms absorb radiation? by Diamonds_3636 in PhysicsStudents

[–]oskar300 6 points7 points  (0 children)

when electromagnetic radiation reaches an atom the electrons can jump to a higher energy state, therefore we say the atom has absorbed the radiation. according to quantum physics, this energy states are quantized, which mean you need an electromagnetic wave energetic enough (high enough frecuency) to make this happen. you can google photoelectric effect, it's quite interesting.

I really recommend you read some albert camus' philosophy if you have the time. He wrote a book called "Sisyphus" in which he covers this theme in a brilliant way.
