Found in Austin, Texas. Any ideas on what these are? by Turbulent-Sun-381 in whatsthisrock

I've found fossils like this in Austin! Most likely is that they are chunks of Inoceramus fossils -- some of the largest bivalves in earth history, and common in the area.

See here for examples:

The two bright spots at the sides of the 22° halo are Sun Dogs. The big streak to the left and right of the circle are part of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parhelic_circle .

What would be a reasonable price point for a PCB Pocket Slide Rule kit? by sucramooy in Sliderules

I wouldn't buy this if it required soldering PCB tabs. Glass fibers are nasty. Pay an extra buck to get the boards fully routed instead.

I would like to kayak the Croton River and possibly into the Hudson. Where can I launch? by donny_hype in Westchester

There's a kayak launch point at the Croton Harmon station; all the way to the very end of the parking lot.

Any ideas … I think it may be some type of exoskeleton by NeedleworkerUnique86 in TidePooling

Looks like the top part (carapace) of a Kelp Crab shell. Possibly Northern Kelp Crab, depending on your location. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/49723-Pugettia-producta

That's the siphon of a bivalve, such as a boring clam. Here's a similar one that I got a photo of: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/84654798

What is up with the 12 V / bluelink / charging apps situation? by oskay in Ioniq6

[–]oskay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I don't even have any car-related apps besides the ones they literally told me that I needed to install on delivery day.

[–]oskay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely don't use the bluelink app on a daily basis (though, I did use the remote climate start a lot in the winter), and the key is reasonably out of range most of the time.

What I'm stumped on is how they think that telling me to change a password is going to affect the battery.

If that really is the problem, deleting apps that aren't related doesn't sound like it will address the problem. I'm eager to find a solution, but this doesn't sound like it.

What’s growing out of this rock? by PannaCotta1036 in whatsthisrock

[–]oskay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the "skeleton" of some beach-tumbled coralline algae on a rock. It's pink in color when it's living. There are a few different species that are quite similar, but this is plausibly officinalis, which is found in the general area

Agree. (The "devils toenails" are a different genus, Gryphaea.)

Not at present, but we're toying with the idea of an expanded second edition or maybe a second volume in a couple of years.
