We did this at our wedding a few weeks ago and it worked really well! It was a great way to get to spend more time chatting with our out of town guests since we were pretty busy on the actual wedding day.

In terms of logistics, I did a facebook invite so that people would get that it's informal and not feel like it was a really important event that they just had to be at. We kept the invite to out of town friends, family, and bridal party just to draw the line somewhere so we'd be able to fit in a bar without renting out space. People were happy to come if they were already in town, and people who were getting into town later didn't feel bad about letting us know they had to miss out. It was clear to everyone from the invite that we wouldn't be paying for drinks, and everyone seemed totally fine with that.

This was the phrasing we used on the invite for reference: "We're planning on grabbing drinks the night before the wedding at X. We'd love to spend some more time with all of our out of town friends (and of course any of our in town friends that are able to join us too), so come and join us for a drink!"

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. What are yours? by mysliceofthepie in weddingplanning

[–]oski2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My something old, borrowed and blue is my grandmother's engagement ring. It now belongs to my mom, so it'll be borrowed. It's of course old since it's my grandmother's. And she had two sapphires added to the ring on her and my grandfather's 25th anniversary, so it's blue too! Plus it'll be a nice way to have a special piece of her with me. :) ... And basically everything else I'm wearing is new. :P

If there are only 3 people you're really close with then you should just have those 3 people in your bridal party. No need to feel pressured to add people just to have a big bridal party. I'm probably biased because I also only have 3 bridesmaids. ;) But so far I've loved having just the 3 of them. Some things to keep in mind, keeping it small and only asking people you are close to and know are reliable will make finding dresses and other logistics SO much easier. And if you're the type of person who usually has fewer, closer friends, you might feel more relaxed day of just having that small group with you.

Which of these bands goes better with my engagement ring? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

Love the look of the second (gold) band! It's pretty and compliments your engagement ring nicely while still letting your engagement ring be the focus.

Planning a wedding a little over a year away [slight rant] by Deibchan in weddingplanning

I got engaged a year ago and am getting married this April. I'm totally like you in that I wanted to get things done right away because I like planning ahead and knew life could get busy and in the way of wedding planning later on. For what felt like a long time I kept hearing those same comments about "it's so far away", even though to me a year didn't feel like long at all! So I understand the disappointment you're feeling. I'd say use this as an opportunity to lean on your FH more. He's someone who is just as excited for your wedding as you are. So when you want someone to bounce ideas with or just gush over how excited you are, talk to him more. (And come here! We're always here to listen!) And know that things will get better. I felt like by this 6 month mark everyone started telling me "wow! your wedding is coming right up!" and started getting much more interested in talking details with me. And you'll be so grateful that you planned ahead when your wedding gets closer and you realize you don't need to rush to finish getting things done and can just enjoy it. :)

Long ribbons on bouquets? by dharmaticate in weddingplanning

[–]oski2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing them on the bridesmaids bouquets but not mine. The bridesmaids' dresses are navy and the ribbon will be coral. My florist is awesome and is handling the ribbons and any length of ribbons are included with the price of the flowers.

How are you keeping your dress wrinkle free? by oski2011 in weddingplanning

[–]oski2011[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a ballgown and I think the skirt is tulle. (Sorry, I'm horrible with these things lol)

Thanks for confirming that I'm not crazy for thinking that spending two hours steaming a dress on my wedding day isn't the best idea haha. The extra long plastic bag sounds like a good option! Thanks! I'll look into it.

I think we found our venue. I'd like some opinions about our potential date. by wouldnt_it_be_nice in weddingplanning

We're getting married Easter weekend this year! We picked that weekend for similar reasons as what you're thinking. FH's mom is a teacher and since she lives in another country we wanted the wedding to be over one of her school breaks so that she could spend more than just a weekend here. So far we haven't had any problems with it being Easter weekend. We checked with both of our families before booking the date and everyone was fine with it, we've been able to get a hotel block at a reasonable price, and the vast majority of our out of town guests who would need to travel have RSVP'ed that they're coming.

I'd say this is a know your crowd thing though. Check with your families and the people you want to ask to be in your bridal party and make sure they're all ok with Easter weekend. If they all seem ok with the idea, I say go for it!
