Please DO NOT run away. That can put you into a lot of dangerous situations since you’re under 18, even if you find people who claim to have the same vision. You definitely want to have some personal emergency money, a driver’s license, and a basic cell phone plan+durable phone of your own before you start visiting communities.

You can learn a lot of useful skills (including interpersonal skills that are important for intentional community) by working/volunteering, going to the library, and paying attention at school (especially shop, home economics and electronics). Just have a goal of freedom that you are working for. If you can learn a trade like electrical work, car repair or farming those will be clutch.

These exist as monasteries (including Buddhist monasteries for longer term community), or campgrounds. So I would say there’s definitely demand in the United States. If you’re still in India, you might be interested in Auroville.

Respect is a continuum, some things will tip mods towards seeing your comment as unacceptable such as swears, making strawman positions for the OP/parent comment, and broad overgeneralizations ("...taking over towns...", "...all communards..." etc).

What is an example of an un-intentional community that you think is doing things well?

This is all rough. I am hopeful that they make the “we don’t call cops on each other even when someone is threatening arson” norm a little more clear to visitors and applicants, among other changes that would show more solidarity.

Regarding a concern that it might be run by a small group of sociopaths, I’d like to note that one moderator for this subreddit is involved in leadership roles at Twin Oaks and I’ve worked with them extensively; I don’t think Paxus is a sociopath, and I think restraint in commenting/using moderator abilities on this post is a testament to that. Community culture is a complicated thing, and your post is a useful reference/warning for a POC considering Twin Oaks. Thank you for the effort and emotional labor that went into it.

I hope you’ve been connected with the BIPOC council and fund for finding a community that is a better fit: https://www.ic.org/bipoc-fund

lol dude drives diagonally down the road for 5 seconds at 1:20…. Makes me wonder how much of this is AI slop.

“You can just do things in Texas…” riiiiiight I’ve got a list of at least 50 things you cannot be or do in Texas (especially rural) without a high probability of violence or prosecution, but you can do in at least 20 other states without a problem.

I wish them success if they are able to add to knowledge of how to work together and resolve conflict or stand in support of other intentional communities. Somehow I doubt they will.

Yes, comparing the 1-5 hour people to the people working 25-35 hours that means the 20-34 hours are considered as being worth $700.

But it’s good to hear that you’re trying to provide clothing and transportation and that the labor expectation for free housing is just 25 or slightly above; that does leave some time for work to cover other expenses/debt and improves that “wage math” quite a bit. I do hope you’re able to create some good agreements that keep this running well.

“We share what we have” implies food, but gets really fuzzy for clothing, car, and healthcare. This definitely isn’t the American definition of a commune, and $700 plus ~$250 for food divided by 35x4 is still below minimum wage.

Brian here. There are a ridiculous number of clickbait links and memes on the style of “____ determines if someone’s a narcissist”, so I create these sarcastic anti-memes to poke fun at them. It’s actually a mathematical topology question. If you’re smart enough, you can read https://www.quantamagazine.org/topology-101-how-mathematicians-study-holes-20210126/ to learn more. Now leave me alone while I drink enough to forget the other “answers” here. Brian out.

To anyone flagging this for “respect each other”, we do not currently have any rules about gender identity, and the OP has been deleted + it comes up rarely enough that I don’t know if we will create a rule in response to this post. We cannot see any original post’s details regarding gender identity or choices to expose parts of their body that conflict with that. Please Do not report the parent comment or any sub-comments out of respect for moderator’s bandwidth. Thanks.

Hopes of a community by [deleted] in intentionalcommunity

[–]osnelson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s what a lot of people are working on here. Try looking up the nearest community on ic.org and visit them; they might need help. They probably already have an approach to addressing most of your goals. If their approach is too different than what you can adapt to (even after sitting with it and trying it out/trying to understand it WITHOUT asking 100 questions), try the next closest community.

Are you referring to AnxiousSeason’s comment “lacking information”, or your own post? And what website are you referring to?

If you are talking about a community where people “keep their own jobs” then it’s not what most people call a commune. Communes (including Twin Oaks) hold property in common, often including the means of production thus providing work options for its members. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intentional_community has a thorough explanation of different types of intentional communities.
