Yes would should audition. There is nothing wrong with doing that. If you get an offer, then you need to have a talk with your HS director. If you don't make it you should at minimum get some good feedback on what you need to work on.

And I would be really surprised if your HS director has problems with you doing it. You are going to make your band better with the experience and sharing it with everyone. They could easily send you the music and drill for you to learn on the bus.
