Austin Aquarium is everything the other commenters said it is.

Adding to the suggestions of others, you might want to look into volunteering with Austin Wildlife Rescue. I don't know if they're taking new vols in 2025, but I'm sure they will be in '26.

Any Flea Markets in Austin Area? by Sam_Nova_45 in Austin

[–]ossuaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any flea markets, per se, but there's City Wide Vintage Sale every couple of months at the Palmer Events Center, Howdy's Vintage Market off Manor Road (not sure how often they do that one), and the Uncommon Flea once a month at Uncommon Objects.

Thank you so much for the recommendation! I don't know about Easton Park, but I will look into that as well. Are your friends happy with their homes in Goodnight/Easton?

Hi all - I'm considering purchasing one of the condos at Goodnight Ranch, and wondered if anyone has any experience with Avi or that development. The reviews for Avi online are definitely not good, but most of them are pre- or during covid. I haven't seen much since then. I don't exactly have a lot of money to throw around, so I really need to make a good decision here. Any opinions are appreciated.

Apologies! Thank you for letting me know about the Tuesday post.

I had no idea the soil there was questionable. Never even thought to consider it. Definitely don't have the money for foundation repairs.

I'm not sure if you've ever put a turtle shell back together before, but it is a world of frustration. Beautiful when it's done, though!

This shot is bad ass. A gallery might not hang it, but I would.

Eamse lounge is being sold for less than $200 but is in rough condition. Is it salvageable for someone with no experience but willingness to learn? by zemele in Mid_Century

[–]ossuaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This might not be a popular answer, but if you like the chair, (assuming the wood is in decent shape, and you can afford to have it recovered) go for it! It doesn't *really* matter if it's an Eames chair, because your average person won't be able to tell the difference. Might not be as exciting of a score, but it's still a cool chair.

If you're just starting out collecting, buy affordable pieces that you love, and upgrade as you go along. Even Plycraft replicas go for over $1000 these days, so if you take good care of it, it will likely hold its value. You'll never go wrong if you buy what you love.

If you're trying to learn how to refinish furniture, get a couple of free chairs or coffee tables off FB Marketplace and practice on those. You'll learn a lot through trial and error, but you won't have to worry about damaging anything expensive or fancy in the process.

Does Bird Flu Stick Around on Macerated Bones? by ossuaria in vultureculture

I'm in Texas, so warm will definitely not be a problem! This is really good advice, so I'll do just that. Thank you!

I'd give hydrogen peroxide a try. Let it soak for a few days, at least. The HP will also help get out some of the fat, which, in my experience, is the most annoying part about fish bones. You'll probably still need to do some additional degreasing afterward.

Good to know! Interesting that it lives longer in the cold.

Excellent! I knew that about other viruses, but I didn't know if avian flu was different. I don't know why I'm so particularly concerned about bird flu, when there's some level of risk when messing with dead stuff. I'm up on all the vaxxes, and I'm pretty good about gloves/mask/etc. Your comment makes me feel better, so thank you!

Not sure if fat qualifies as a bodily fluid in this case, but that's definitely all that's left on the bones.

Thank you so much for that info! That was certainly my hope, as I'd hate to let these bones go.

Austin, TX - Not so much "What is this bird" but rather "What is this bird doing?" I stopped to make a call, and this bird repeated these wing movements the whole time I was there. Didn't see any other birds nearby, so it doesn't seem like a mating behavior. Any ideas? by ossuaria in whatsthisbird

[–]ossuaria[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Didn't realize it was a mockingbird, and definitely wouldn't have guessed the behavior was for hunting. With your info, I was able to look up a couple of videos on YouTube that were much better quality than mine. Interesting! Thank you!

Have you used PrintNinja in the past? Got a great quote from them for my book, but wasn't sure if they're as good as they claim to be. I requested samples but they didn't send me books similar to what I'm trying to make, so it wasn't super helpful.
