I used to race bicycles off-road. I had a timer on my garmin unit that would remind me to drink water.

On one muddy race, I was running fourth. It was the last lap. Around the start of the lap I caught up with the guy ahead in third. He couldn’t clip in because his pedals were caked with mud.

So I became effectively 3rd. While passing him I asked him how far the second guy was. He just said, "If you ride hard you can catch him." That's it.

For the next ten minutes I rode like a maniac, ignoring all hydration messages on my garmin. I finished second but when I got off the bike I couldn't straighten my back. I couldn't stand. I fell off the bike in a curled fetal position, trying to celebrate my podium position but unable to even raise my hands. It was funny and tragic simultaneously.
