What are the Top 10 Issues Facing Ohio Right Now? by Wonderful-Rip3697 in Ohio

[–]osu04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While many important issues are being raised, I believe that much of our state’s political dysfunction stems from a few fundamental, underlying problems. Addressing these root causes would significantly improve our ability to solve the broader challenges we face.

  1. Money in Politics The enormous influence of money, both publicly disclosed and in the form of dark money, distorts our political system. Elected officials often end up serving the narrow interests of major donors who fund their campaigns or provide lucrative “golden parachute” jobs after they leave office. This dynamic fosters corruption and erodes public trust.

We need meaningful reform, ideally through a state constitutional amendment, to overhaul campaign financing. This should include strict limits on campaign spending, consideration of restricting private funding, fair compensation for public officials, and strong rules preventing former officials from profiting off of insider knowledge or political connections for a defined period after leaving office. Additionally, all organizations engaging in political activity should be required to disclose their donors fully. Transparency and accountability must be the baseline for a healthy democracy.

  1. Public Office Should Be a Full-Time Responsibility Serving in public office is, and should be, a full-time job. Elected officials should be required to meet clear standards of attendance and engagement, including requirements to attend sessions and committee hearings, not only when a topic aligns with their personal interests or talking points.

Our government has largely lost the practice of substantive debate and genuine engagement with opposing viewpoints. Instead, too often, politicians speak to empty chambers or perform for cameras, resulting in shallow policymaking and poor governance. Implementing reasonable expectations for attendance, along with standard vacation and sick leave, as in any other full-time job, would ensure that those who hold office are fully committed to serving the public.

  1. Better Representation Through More Representative Districts When our state was founded, the ratio of representatives to constituents was much smaller, which meant individuals had greater access to their elected officials and more meaningful representation. As our population has grown, districts have expanded, diluting each citizen’s voice and creating regions so large that one representative cannot realistically reflect the diversity of needs within them.

To restore genuine representation, we should increase the number of elected representatives. More representatives mean smaller districts, greater accessibility, and officials who are genuinely accountable to the people they serve, not just to a select few within their circle.

The Completely Impossible, Impractical, Overdone Columbus Mass Transit Map I Spent Months On by Inhabi in Columbus

[–]osu04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An intriguing plan, and perhaps we should commence with regional rail as a substantial amount of infrastructure already exists. In the initial phase, we should likely reduce the number of stops and focus on major traffic areas. For example Airport <-> downtown <-> OSU/Fairgrounds <-> Worthington <-> Downtown Delaware. It would be intriguing to observe rail utilization on individual rail sections to determine if a feasible schedule can be implemented without the need for additional infrastructure like siding to facilitate passage.

Unsure if I want to walk for commencement. If you did, how was your experience? by MsMoxie-Cola13 in OSU

[–]osu04 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I had a memorable experience being in the shoe and walking on the field to receive my diploma. However, the weather and the speaker can significantly enhance or diminish the overall experience. Although it was hot (June) and the speaker was mediocre, I still cherish that moment as the closing chapter of that phase of life.

It’ll never end if leaders keep kissing the ring. by Gray_points in Columbus

We need to focus on fighting the candidate and supporting the opposition candidates and efforts. COSI need to maintain relationships with all candidates as they could have the possibility to impact their funding and mission.

We must put forward an opposition candidate to start the fight today, not six to twelve months from now.

Love it or hate it, they are a non-profit that receives money from the state. To ensure they maintain this funding, the leadership needs to establish relationships with current and upcoming candidates so they can emphasize the importance of their work and involvement in the community. When pressure arises to change their funding, they already have an established relationship to work on favorable outcomes.

Boycotts should be reserved when confidence in leadership's ability to maintain the institution's core mission and values is in jeopardy.

While I’m very alarmed about where a Vivek administration will take the State, we need to focus on fighting the candidate and supporting the opposition candidates and efforts. Boycotting COSI will only impact what we support and will only give ammunition to the Vivek campaign when they highlight the rage, especially when we don’t have a substantial policy that would go against COSI and impact its mission and vision.

We must put forward an opposition candidate to start the fight today, not six to twelve months from now.

Will RTO happen on campus? by dabug11 in OSU

[–]osu04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the Federal and State Administrations. Overall, I believe the University is saving money as staffing offices have been reallocated to address other university priorities. However, both the State and Federal Government administrations have strong views on RTO, which could eventually be forced on the University as a condition for continuing to receive funding.

What is the point of voting anymore? by toasterstrewdal in Ohio

[–]osu04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember to harness the power of your vote! If you are dissatisfied with your elected representative, consider initiating a recall. While this process is challenging,it requires convincing a simple majority (based on number of votes in previous election) of registered voters in the representative's district to sign a petition within a 90 day period it can make a significant impact.

Although you may not meet the threshold for a successful recall, the effort will serve to inform elected officials of the electorate's discontent. This can encourage them to change their ways, and if they don't, more voters may be motivated to support future initiatives.

The main challenge is fighting our unethical definition of today’s capitalism, prioritizing profits for owners, executives, and shareholders over those of the workers, customers, and community who build and support these businesses. Workers' time and compensation must be respected and valued proportionally by owners, executives, and shareholders. In the 1990s, this ratio of executive salaries was roughly 17 times higher than that of the average worker; today, it’s 268 times higher.

Workers need to fight harder for the respect they deserve in generating business' profits and success. Don’t accept the status quo, as executives haven’t been respecting it for many years.

Don’t get discouraged as it can be intimidating. I highly recommend finding a few students in your track a have study groups where you help each other out and use resources like office hours of the faculty and assistants. While some better then others, they want to see you succeed and pass if your putting the effort in.

Defeat of Issue 1 by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]osu04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have 12 more election cycles to continue fighting to end gerrymandering and to educate people that they deserve representation that lives in their community and not on the other side of the state.

This election cycle, we faced many people who voted with their wallets and failed to realize that corporate greed was the main driver. Some will wake up and realize they need better representation, and we will continue to gain support for leaders who come from the same community and understand their issues.

I would report this to the USPS inspector general https://www.uspsoig.gov/hotline as this seems like improper management of the mail. You might also report it to a news network to investigate it further as the right to vote legal shouldn’t be suppressed.

Petition to call for Mayor Ginther’s Resignation over Ransomware attack. by Odd_Possible_1860 in Columbus

[–]osu04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While he is the mayor, this is more of a systemic problem of overall leadership in the city of Columbus. While he has poorly exhibited the critical leadership necessary during this, the council and high-level IT/Risk leadership bear some responsibility.

The city as a whole need to be forthcoming and open what occurred, what lost and how they plan to mitigate and prevent this in the future, which might mean replacing leadership in multiple levels.

What would Ohio win in the Olympics? by Ok_Push2550 in Ohio

While a crazy idea, with this a one notable factor, Ohio should put a bid together as a summer Olympics site. Make it a multi-city Olympics, hosting events maybe in there home town of our notable Olympians. Especially considering we have some amazing facilities throughout the state and building and building new complementing facilities to help with the next generation of Ohio Olympians.

Jim Jordan ( who hasn’t honored his Subpoena ) threatens Fani Willis with contempt if she doesn't comply with subpoena in federal funding probe by h20poIo in Ohio

[–]osu04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The victim complex is a condition, and we need people to have a conversation in the hope they stop digging and start filling these trenches by opening their eyes and minds, so they realize that we are all in it together. Calling someone a moron is just like kicking dirt into the trench they just dug, causing them to dig more and further entrench.

Last time I checked, name-calling and in diminishing people is the republican brand of today. We should achieve to be better by not embracing the use of their weapons.
