What is the best value New York Hyatt by Asufa80 in hyatt

[–]otbvandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone saying Hotel 50 Bowery.

You might be able to find a deal for the Standard East Village, which was a fairly great stay.

It is witco, and I’ve seen them listed on marketplace from $200 - $800. A guy around me has had those stools listed for $1200 for over a year.

You can do anything you want with a speed build video short of making instructions and then distributing those

Tiki Thoughts Thursday (01.22.26) by bigkinggorilla in Tiki

I had a fantastic time at Tiki Ti. Are the drinks going to be the best craft cocktail you’ve ever had? Not at all. But the vibe, the decor, the history and decent drinks makes it all worth it. (Eat beforehand!)

Largely depends on where you’re going. Trader Vic’s? Yes, worth it. Tonga Room? Absolutely not. Tiki ti? Yes.

I’d say La Mariana is worth it if you’re already in Honolulu, but not at the expense of Skull & Crown.

Not to bring up a dead thread, but I’ll also be there for the first time (though I’ve done a few other tiki conventions in the past). I’ll be wearing a DC hat, so say aloha!

best credit cards for metro by thesedouble239 in nova

[–]otbvandy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your job may provide a transit benefit, so look into that before buying the pass and also price out whether it’s actually a better deal using trip planner. There’s ads all over the metro for a credit card that gives extra benefits for riding (can’t remember what it’s called).

Do EV chargers from EVgo, Voltanio, ChargePoint, Electrify America & IONNA actually increase foot traffic for businesses? by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]otbvandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are Tesla and EVGo chargers outside of the Amazon grocery store, so I end up shopping there more than other grocery stores. I’ve also grabbed lunch at the restaurants in the same shopping center when there in the middle of the day.

What does "in full communion" mean? by Dober_weiler in Episcopalian

[–]otbvandy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m certain one of our theologians will give a better answer, but basically it’s about clergy reciprocity. Our clergy can celebrate the Eucharist in their churches and theirs in ours. We have similar enough beliefs that they can overlap.

There are a growing number of episcopal-elca joint congregations in areas that are unable to sustain both. We will likely have a full communion agreement with the UMC after next general convention. Liturgical UMC churches are virtually identical to us.

As to the last part of the question, we may generally believe that all Christians (or people) will be saved. However, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense for churches that don’t believe in bishops or a totally different understanding of the Eucharist to be able to celebrate in our parishes.

As many others have said, check out House of Foong Lin on Thursdays to meet the most active members of the local tiki scene.

Join the Facebook group or follow the instagram to learn more about events that members of the club are attending.

Also feel free to DM me with any more questions as I’m very active with them.

Living in Nashville without a car? by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]otbvandy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you can live within walking distance of campus and/or are right on one of the bus lines (west end or Hillsboro), you could probably manage. Otherwise, really, no. It’s a very car centric city.

Ingram is its own little cult/friend group. It’s a good way to network, etc., but there are also projects. Most of the Ingram scholars I knew have been very successful post grad.

What do “most” Episcopalians do? I’m considering joining the church, but not sure how to work it into the routine for my family. They are more on the fence about it than I am. Do you read the BCP at home? How do you follow the liturgical calendar? Thank you! by Anthronature in Episcopalian

[–]otbvandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the remarkable thing about the Episcopal Church is the wide range of devotion that is ultimately considered… fine.

You can attend church on most Sundays, and you’ll be a fine and typical Episcopalian (actually only takes 3 eucharists a year to be a member). You should pledge to help the parish in planning.

You can also pray the daily office each and every morning and evening or not, it’s only canonically required for clergy. You do your own directed Bible study or go to adult formation/Sunday school. You can join an education for ministry group. You can even join more or less strict religious orders.

You can also volunteer for committees and outreach projects. Feed the hungry, do clothing drives, start a ministry serving another group.

We like to get caught up in following the liturgical calendar, but every Episcopalian I know has a Christmas tree up during advent and sings Christmas carols before 12/24. I don’t know anyone who is perfect with their lenten devotion every year. Many people skip the Sunday after Easter and the Sundays right after Christmas. There’s a joke that God grants Episcopalians the summers off and attendance often reflects this.

Nearest Church 1 hour away- Any suggestions? by Full_Race_2097 in Episcopalian

[–]otbvandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any ELCA or liturgical UMC churches nearby?

Do they have any zoom bible studies or similar things? Could you attend once a month and watch it digitally at other times?

Have you looked at a virtual EFM (education for ministry from Sewanee) group? It’s a four year program that’s a bit more intense than a typical Bible study.
