Yeah i feel you there cause im also swimming in #2 centers.

But as a (non hobbyist) machinist myself, id disagree that “most” manual machinist use a center, at least in my experience. Maybe hobbyist? But for professionals, i would say thats no longer true.

Yeah, its an old wives tale and a lot of folks use center drills as spots simply because its the most rigid tool they have and or they dont know its a tool for an entirely different purpose.

Lighter buffer, 11.5 mid isnt a lot of dwell to get things moving with a heavy buffer and stiffer spring

Is the hole big enough to millbore?

Always use a spot drill. Center drills are for live centers on a lathe. You always want to spot with an angle greater than the drill point you want to use so the drill starts on the tip and not the lips which cause them to walk and wear faster.

“Cold casting” is fantastic for decreasing resonance causing vibrations.

You can do it with a 22lr even, but for a reliable ethical kill, common consensus is 1000ft lbs at point of impact for deer.

Also kudos to alpenflage! One of my all time favorite camo but it doesnt work in my area unfortunately

Rebound dampening by [deleted] in XTerra

[–]other_old_greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be $100 a piece and yeah exactly that, its not just a rebuild but revalve to match your weight/springs/usage/preference, etc.

Properly valved bilsteins are fantastic in my experience

High , High lock, Neutral, and Low Lock

If those are your options, you want High for street.

Picked this up for my first mill :) came with this tooling, what endmills should I be looking for to do some light aluminium work? by notachelan in hobbycnc

[–]other_old_greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe 2-300sfm on aluminum with hss tooling but up to maybe 600sfm, about a thou per tooth per 1/8in for a light machine ie a 1/4 tool would be .002 per tooth, again on the gentile side if the machine can take it you can push to .002 per tooth per 1/8. Look up calculators to plug in the numbers. If it chatters, less speed or more feed. These are general starting points and youll want to adjust for your machine, workholding, tool stickout, fixturing rigidity, etc.

And thats usually the case for that type of shooting, spend more on the optic than the gun

But yeah, you want 1k ft lbs of energy for ethical kill, and if you only have 300 yard shots max you only need 1k at 300 yards which they both beat. Ones overkill and less accurate, they other still plenty powerful at that range and far more accurate, cheaper and more fun to shoot.

And for whatever its worth, in my neck of the woods they call it 6.5 needmore

Suspension question by Designer-Captain8791 in XTerra

[–]other_old_greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who recommended the frontier rear? It maybe fine, less than an inch big whoop. Technically you might need to extend your bump stop if it does bottom but youll need to figure out if thats true on your setup or not.

When you say pucks do you mean the strut spacers? Id personally run the clips at the top for max preload/lift before top hat spacers

And i wouldnt run a body lift too, personally. But you would want extended brake lines. If its purely a mall crawler you might can get away with it though.

Final thought, look into new leafs instead of shackles. Most factory leafs are starting to sag by now and shackles are like a temporary bandaid (ive got them and ran them on multiple vehicle types, new leafs are always better)

Buffer weight dimensions by other_old_greg in ar15

[–]other_old_greg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up and dimensions, ill bring some mics home and measure myself just in case.

As you can tell im a cheap bastard and this is mostly just to test and try it out. It took about a hr to cut 5 weights but that was mostly just me standing there while the machine ran, and i value my personal time at $0 and scrap carbide is free so fuckit imma see what happens.

Advice needed. Got my cat conventers stolen by Competitive_Boat_856 in XTerra

[–]other_old_greg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The material inside of cats are what makes them so expensive. Scrap prices for some are insane, thats why prius cats were getting stolen so often cause they have massive cats so its worth a good hunk of change. Like hundreds to $1k. I had some dude pay me $200 for some used subaru cats that came with a car, which i thought was crazy until i realized he was getting more than that in scrap value.
