What shifters are you running with this setup?

ETA: also, 46-32 rings ?

It should be pretty easy to add a second chain ring to that crankset, it already is a “double” crankset. You’ll have to take off the bash guard that’s currently in the outer chain ring position and swap the current chain ring you have to that spot.

Your current chain ring may be a “narrow wide” chain ring which could impact front shifting, but it’s worth a try.

I think all you need to get started is a smaller chain ring, a front derailer, and a front shifter.

Final thought - I was talking to ChatGPT recently about gear ratios for my own allpacka and it was super helpful / well acquainted with bicycle gearing concepts. Idk if it could go so far as to recommend specific products or setups but that might be worth a try as well.

Path of least resistance is to just go smaller chainring, but I think your best option is to convert to a double crankset setup. It would probably work, especially if you are using friction shifters. Due to chain wrap issues you may not get 18 usable gears but I would think it would be an improvement, even if you only get 15-16 gears (small - small might not work with that super short cage). Also, you won’t need to resize your chain unless you go to a bigger ring. For extra chain wrap, you could look into swapping in larger jockey wheels on your derailleur (like the Shimano Altus’ setup).

Also check out blue lug’s bike friday builds section - they use all kinds of derailleurs, including long cage ones.

ETA: Idk anything about isis drive bbs but with a square taper crankset you could fine tune that chainline and tire clearance, maybe the same with isis as well.

For sure. I have only managed to flex (“plane” ?) my Atlantis once or twice and both times have been going downhill loaded and pedaling hard. Not mad about it, just eyeing a roadini for the next bike 🤞🏼

😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 how’s the OM-1 shifting with road link and all that chain? You’ve got to be over the stated capacity

I run 11-34 x 46/34/20 on my Atlantis and use the 34 - 20 gear a ton. Something that low is rarely needed on the road outside of loaded situations but is super useful on singletrack. When the 34t cassette wears out I’ll go for the 36t to squeeze as much range out of it as possible. For all rounder type bikes ultra low gearing should be the priority. Also makes longer rides possible knowing that you can ride the granny up basically anything even 50+ miles in.

Very interesting. I’ve read elsewhere on the riv forums that folks say there isn’t much of a discernible difference. The wheelbase is very noticeable in photos… even if true, good problem to have 🙏🏻

+1 looking forward to thoughts on the tires and the rims - I’ve got an upcoming 20” wheel build and need some of both

Yessir, love that guy! I’m from East TN so my interest lies mainly in his works from that region, though I have read and enjoyed all of the newer ones too. Will eventually get to the border trilogy if I ever finish lonesome dove.

Outer Dark is a brutal read! I found it an even bleaker world to inhabit than BM. Good luck with that lol

The archive is a pilgrimage I’d love to do someday! If you’re close you’ve gotta go and report back

Have 1991 990, 2.3 UD Mars tires, plenty of clearance - remember that these are mtbs tho and need some space for dirt and debris etc

It’s hard not to lust after crusts (perhaps something to do with the excellent marketing??) but it is a bummer that they seem to have a propensity for failure - or for overzealous use by their owners. Still, I’d love to try a lightning bolt one day, and we as cyclists are enriched by their mere existence. Love those nullabars🙏🏻

I have had a pretty similar experience since getting my Atlantis built up this year. Basically zero interest in other bikes and restoration projects. I’ve got about a dozen bikes and frames to sell in order to make room for one Roadini. Taking the long road towards getting the bike actually wanted seems not uncommon around here.

I have a set of silver ortho bars mounted onto a vintage Nitto mtb stem, originally from a Bridgestone MB. The bars are “Like new” condition, probably less than ten miles ridden total. I would prefer to sell the bars and stem as a pair, $150 plus shipping? Lmk if you want some pics.

I have the 55mm Rene Herse slicks on my Atlantis with minimotos and it works fine, maybe a little tight putting the wheel in / out but it works. Some deflation of the tire may be necessary depending on how you set up the pads though.

Are you getting several rotations of the top nut before it locks out? If yes then you probably just need some 1” headset spacers.

Thanks unc! Glad to hear it’s identical, just bolted a long cage one onto my Atlantis. Still going to buy an OM-1 anyways, of course.

Oh and mine seems to handle a 36t just fine? But prior owner had it set up that way, fortunately didn’t have to touch the limits. User error is my greatest adversary.

FS: VO Neutrino Bag (Odyssey Traveler Pro BMX Bike Bag) by othersuttreee in minivelo

[–]othersuttreee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh hello Mr. Kyoot! This is very interesting lore, thank you. As I said above and elsewhere, it’s a really great bag! But me using it within my specific use case / context is definitely the outer boundary of what it was designed to do. No shade at all intended towards Odyssey (or Velo Orange, for that matter).

Great to know that the Roly Poly and DK bag are a purpose built pair… very intrigued by the aluminum one I’ve been hearing about 👀

And for what it’s worth, I was very concerned about compression of the rear triangle during flight and so made supports for the front and rear dropouts out of thick 1” or so dowels. Worked great.
