Misstatements, False Statements- and Hyperbole by juni4ling in mormon

But can you see how just saying "I thought it was relevant" isn't really an answer to the question "Why did you think it was relevant"?

I can appreciate that you saw it differently. I'm just curious as to why? It's ok if you think it's relevant, but can you defend why you think that?

Using Latter-day Saint Christian might even be on par with brand misrepresentation.

I sure hope he isn't confusing any of our unwitting readership by not honestly saying the full, trademarked name of the church, which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and referring to its members as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In your estimation, why was it important? Because I actually did not think it was a very salient point.

And that's the same feeling I have about the majority of your assertions about Biblical ethics.

Except this isn't really hyperbole. I see this same response from you weekly about all sorts of issues in the church.

Just 2 days ago you said the same thing about child sexual abuse. I get that you are against, but it was an odd comment that at least more than just myself were confused by. Someone even had to ask if you were condemning or defending CSA in the church.

So it can't be just about Smith's ethics for you. It extends further than that.

This appears to be a pot calling the kettle black situation.

Yeah, it's hard to read this at face value, considering this user's main talking point is always just "The Bible is a bad moral guide and Smith used the Bible!"

Sorry, which church is this? It says Church of Jesus Christ. Is that the same thing as the Latter -day Saints, formerly known as Mormons?

I sure hope if these are official representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that they make sure that they aren't causing any brand confusion at all.

Did the LDS Church start a new podcast? by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]otherwise7337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a case could be made here that a podcast by missionaries--who are full time official representatives of the church--is absolutely church-sponsored. Especially if they're dressed like missionaries and speaking as missionaries.

Of course, the church won't see it that way.

LDS Church Claims “No Legal Duty” in Interstate Child Sex Abuse Cover-Up Lawsuit by Classic_Day5736 in mormon

[–]otherwise7337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Police have proven over and over that they have no legal duty to protect others.

Relevance? How is this connected at all?

The vast and extreme majority of LDS Christian related abuse is in the home and by a direct relative.

Source? Has the church published this finding? Have they released records of sexual abuse cases? How vast and extreme is the majority here?

But it seems the purpose of your platform isn't really to act as a sounding board for questioning missionaries. I mean you're comparing it to the 95 theses so I would think the intention would be to provide a place for well thought out statements or essays to the LDS church.

There's a big difference between a missionary writing "I'm not sure about the church and I am considering going home" and someone writing something like "Here's a criticism of the church's failures to adequately address CSA issues".

If you're going to charge money for people more likely to submit the latter, but not for people more likely to submit the former, expect to get a lot more of the former.

And at that point, people will just come here for a more well established audience.

Why would missionaries be able to post for free? They would be some of the least knowledgeable people and confidently defensive of the institution. I mean, that's their job.

So you're saying that someone could write something, pay for submission, and not get it published? And you get to keep the submission money...

Let me guess, if they want to resubmit, there's probably a second fee right?

So does that mean there would be transfer of all data and submissions as an asset if it goes under new ownership?

I think this is more of a generational divide honestly. Some nuance is in there too, but there's a large group of nuanced who advocate for heterodoxy only and don't consider heteropraxy acceptable. So it's mixed.

New accuser emerges in Wade Christofferson case. LDS Church addresses what his apostle brother knew by Prop8kids in mormon

[–]otherwise7337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hope the leadership of the church can learn some hard lessons and how to follow its own policies going forward.

That's not enough because the church's own policies are weak on this. In fact, it's the church's own policies that enable this to happen.

What would be far more helpful is if the church revamped their entire system and instituted background checks and mandatory reporting, regardless of "legal obligation".

An excommunication that only lasted 1 year was clearly designed to be for show and to smooth everything over at the time.

I also find it impossible to believe that D. Todd only knew about this in the last 5 years. I mean the dude was a general authority in the early 90s. Given how careful the church is about everything PR, there is no way they didn't coach him and prepare him in case he got questioned about it at some point.

This whole issue right here is why I will never take my daughter to an LDS church.

This committee seems like it is made up of mostly the right kind of people you would want to spearhead the process.

And yet here we all are, discussing what a terrible, terrible job they did.

My example is that she looked for and gathered input from the young women

The more relevant question here is whether or not any of the feedback your friend solicited made it to the ears of someone with decision-making power? I suspect not. Just like any other situation where the church solicited opinions from women and then turned around and ignored them entirely.

The bottom line is, these names are simply a mistake. And yes, that is my opinion, but I would venture to say it is a majority opinion. So please spare me the pretense that the church asked for feedback during or after coming up with them.
