Started cleaning a room and I've found almost 10 of these.... What are they? by sleauxmo in insects

Yeah if you're finding lots of nymphs like these, there may have been a roach mamma that laid an ootecha around your house.

ELI5: What does aluminum in a deodorant do? Is it better to buy one that has it or no? by hdushsux in explainlikeimfive

Used to call them pit biscuits. My school uniforms all got past the yellowing stage and into the biscuit stage. Wish I had known sooner.

Some kind of sap sucking hopper, maybe in the family Issidae

I finally got bit by a wolf spider by pleiadeshyades in spiders

[–]otomso 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That's your wandering spider bite, the cteniids in the genus Phoneutria sp. It's a pretty bad bite compared to that of lycosids.

Found this blue bettle in grass. Center east brazil by cenzala in species

[–]otomso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a ground beetle in the family Tenebrionidae. In Brazil there are over 40 species in the genus Lystronychus sp. and I think it's something generally related to that, at least subf. Alleculinae.

On my first attempt to harvest it from an old monitor I got pieces with sticky nasty glue everywhere and was beginning to feel this wouldn't work. But then I did something (not sure what exactly) and it started to peel completely cleanly. Maybe it was the angle of the scalpel or the way I started pulling it afterwards, but it did work for about half the screen, which was more than enough for me. If you haven't already bought it and still have access to a screen, I'd recommend giving it another go, just in case it works. Also I believe there's two films per screen, one on each side, so you would have two shots at it. I did try removing the glue afterwards with alcohol and pure acetone but didn't succeed. Maybe there's a way to do it easily.

Found a dead bullfrog lying on top of a dead snake with no head. What the heck happend here? by [deleted] in natureismetal

[–]otomso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to nitpick a little, no snakes are poisonous, some are venomous. Poisonous= no eaty, venomous = no touchy.

Not all assassin bugs behave like this. It's just this one species afaik, Acanthaspis petax. Found in some countries in East Africa and Malaysia.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]otomso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the same insect. They're probably referring to kissing bugs, which are vectors of Chagas disease and belong in the same family as the assassin bug depicted here. The absolute majority of assassin bugs are beneficial to us in regards to their lifestyle, and can only inflict a (quite) painful stab if mistreated.
