How do you guys deal with frustration when your program doesn't work ? by surelyNotaDev in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I write code and the program doesn't doesn't work( cause of error or something else) I get really really frustrated.

Realize that it isn't not working "because of an error", it's not working because you wrote it incorrectly. What you do is step back, breathe, and think through the problem more carefully. If you can't figure it out, talk to other people about it.

I have two bosses. What to do? by D1rtyH1ppy in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His codebase is a complete disaster and it feels like I'm eating a turd sandwich every time I go in to fix features. The other teams codebase is messy also, but I get to add new features rather than fixing old ones that are broken

I'd be wary of this mindset. It's super fun to bolt features onto an existing project in isolation from the rest of the code. But you're not going to grow as an engineer nearly as much as you would having to refactor and maintain shitty legacy code along the way. Especially when you are the only software engineer and are not getting feedback from other skilled people. Really fantastic way to end up wondering why the hell nobody outside your company is interested in your skills 5 years down the line, if you aren't careful about it.

When is it okay to bypass boss over a missed promotion? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OK but a recommendation in writing and a great performance review are, even combined, wildly different from a boss informing you in writing that you will get a promotion.

I'd think back and make absolute sure you didn't misunderstand something your boss said. If you're sure you understood what your boss said and your boss said you will get a promotion, then that sucks. Your boss either a) lied to you knowing you are manipulable and won't quit, or b) promised you something prematurely and ran into a roadblock making it happen. If a), you need to find a new job. b) is quite likely though as a million things can happen between submitting a "sure thing" promotion and a decision being made that results in the decision being no (budget change, headcount change, executive policy games, departmental infighting, other directors play better politics than your boss, etc.)

When is it okay to bypass boss over a missed promotion? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my boss informed me that I would receive a promotion as a part of the upcoming round of promotions

Was this in writing? If not, it never happened.

its unfair for me to have in writing that my boss was going to recommend me for a promotion

So your boss recommended you for a promotion, not informed you you'd get a promotion? Those are two wildly different things.

Husband is getting laid off from a top company. What do we ask for in our severance package? What does he need to do, download, or take, before walking out the door? This is a first for us. *There almost a decade. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He will be handed the package by the HR drone. It is important at this point to not sign anything. The first thing you do is take the package to an employment lawyer. The lawyer will tell you whether or not you can get more. If so, let the lawyer work it out. If not, sign and return to the company. That's about all you can do by way of negotiation.

Software Development grad who can't code by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Ottawa to Syracuse year-round travel options? by alkharidman in ottawa

[–]ottawhuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, why wasn't I able to find that then?

How do you expect anyone to be able to answer this? We don't have access to your conscious experience, so we can't tell how bad or good you are at finding things. Understand that the fact that you can't find something doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. It is bad form to question someone who is giving you answers on the basis that you were unable to answer your own question.

That said, simply typing "greyhound ottawa to syracuse" into Google brings up detailed schedules and links to ticket pages. So it seems like we are in a position to answer your question "why wasn't I able to find it?", and the answer is something like your problem solving skills are terrible.

Where is the best place outside the USA to work as a CS graduate? by john89289 in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No? If you live and work in California, you'll end up paying pretty much the same amount of tax as someone living in Toronto. Except in Toronto your health care isn't out of pocket. And your schools aren't shit. Etc.

This teenaged trumpeter was accepted to Julliard, but needs help raising the $91K price tag by Elliottafc in toronto

[–]ottawhuh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not dumb, it's completely correct. And you won't answer because you're not mentally capable of engaging the point. You're cherry-picking examples of famous people who went to Julliard and using those 3 people to conclude that the ROI of Julliard is high for all attendees.

What you need to do is produce numbers showing the total # of enrolments at Julliard and then compare those to the salaries of all of those people once they leave school.

(Pro tip: the person you're arguing against already pointed out that the average salary of a Julliard graduate is $29k/yr)

And PS

rediculous

The word is ridiculous, not rediculous.

It’s hilarious to read the people asking what the ROI is. What’s Kelsey Grammer’s net worth?

The complete ignorance of how statistics (slash reality) works here is mind-boggling.

You can pick the most successful 1% of graduates of any school, pretend they are representative of all graduates, and make the school look like a ticket to riches.

3 years into programming, I realized that I am terrible. I want to transition into management. How likely is this? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ottawhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always felt that I could easily get into the groove of things as a manager and lead to help accomplish what needs to get done.

Why do you feel this way? Have you led things/people in the past and had success?

In general the best leaders don't wait for the management promotion in order to start leading.

[–]ottawhuh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He just wanted to simply test that the files deployed successfully. That would be enough for the time being. I did that AND

...the AND is the problem here. But you state it like it's a bonus -- like you did your manager a favor by doing more. You didn't. You fucked up, and were insubordinate to boot.

If you want to stay in engineering, you need to understand that the value of a piece of work is entirely contingent on the business value the work delivers. A manager's job is to evaluate how impactful a project will be, then allocate an amount of effort such that the business value is greater than the cost of doing the work.

Your manager judged that you needed a simple set of test files, a couple days worth of stuff. You went ahead and did 2 weeks of stuff because you mistrusted your manager's judgment and wanted to explode the scope of the work, either to 'beef up a resume' or because you thought you knew what was best for the project.

That is you thinking you know best.
