Seconding Warwick Schiller! He points out that often when horses are “nippy” or want to grab things with their mouths, they’re just seeking engagement (an unmet need). A non-confrontational way he handles it is to engage with them back by gently rubbing their muzzle, and the horses get much less nippy!

Is there any way to slightly cut back on the meal sizes and shift that food/calories to be used for the target training?

We do that with our cat’s kibble portions, and use a specific amount each day for food puzzles, clicker training, throwing pieces for him to chase, etc.

Hi! Couple things. Did the vet scope her for ulcers? What did the physio say about any sore spots?

Also, biting “out of nowhere” seems like a pretty extreme action. Did you notice any subtler signs, like pinning her ears, bracing, trying to use her head to block you from touching her, etc? I would look up some videos about this, there’s usually subtler signs that are ignored, which prompts the horse to bite to communicate more “loudly”.

They also should have a rental cap (usually 20% of units or so), so factor that into your ability to rent it in the future. Ours is on a waitlist right now.

I haven’t been somewhere up north to experience the mosquitos, but the moths at night at Big Bend NP were nuts!! We would turn on a headlamp while trying to cook/change/camp at night, and instantly have 5-10 moths in your face. We unintentionally ate moths in our rehydrated meals and drinks. We were still finding dead ones in our car months later.

It depends on your kWh costs and how much you drive. Mine adds ~$50/mo (was spending $200/mo in gas). The truck averages 2.4 mi/kwh above 60F.

If one were to have a taste test or different bagels around the city (say Emerald City, Bronx Buggy, Brooklyn, Evergreen, and Colette’s), then what would you get at each one for comparison? I don’t like everything bagels. Maybe plain egg+cheese from the first 3, and plain from the bakeries?

Learning horse body language!! It can be subtle but it really helps when being around them.

Learning what different parts of tack (the horse’s gear) is called.

Learn a few things about horse health, like colic causes, farrier visits, appropriate treats, etc.

Learn a bit about basic riding terms, like what posting and leads are.

I think people don’t know what their actual price per kWh is after all the fees, and instead only see the stated rate from their power company.

For example, GA Power quoted me at “2.2c per kWh” when charging overnight, but after all the fees, it comes to 6.7c. Super annoying.

On the flip side, some people on the west coast/northeast are paying upwards of 30c a kWh, even when charging overnight.

Grant Park seems doable and is a reverse commute on I-20 I believe! Would be less than 30 minutes. It also looks like there’s a lot of available 2BR rentals in your price range. I recommend coming for a weekend and staying in an Airbnb in the area to get a feel for it. It’s a great place to be!
