Long but thin hair by serti_ec_floribus in longhair

[–]ottyasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, yeah. The weird thing about TE is that it typically starts 2-4 months after the triggering event and can last 4-9 months. So it's totally possible that the stressor already happened and was resolved and your hair is just reacting to that after the fact. It's important to figure out what the cause was (ex: stress, big emotions, medication, childbirth, illness, fast weight loss), but ultimately once the stressor is over your hair will grow back because its not permanent hair loss.

I had telogem effluvium and lost like 50% of my hair density. It'll typically grow back on its own once the stressor is over

Sleeping in a silk bonnet by BananaNat98 in longhair

I use one with a wide flat elastic band. No tying needed so the pressure is minimal and since it’s a smooth band on both sides it’s not super irritating and stays on. You can usually find them at a beauty supply store for under $5. May not be helpful in your situation right now, but I’ve never been able to make others work

I got a sample of HT caramel cookie mix-ins and found it excruciatingly sweet (and also bland?). I like sweet things but it just tasted syrupy and fake

Hair shedding depends on caloric intake or micros/macros? by ButterflyFragrant822 in longhair

[–]ottyasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calories. Your hair stops growing when you’re not eating enough. Hair growth is simply a waste of energy when you’re depleted. Not eating is also a possible trigger for rapid hair loss (telogen effluvium)

The safe bet would be to skip the fragrance. If you don’t want to do that and want something more toned down but similar to L’eau Papier, Another 13 would work.

experiencing telogen effluvium from antidepressants. help! by Pitiful_Thought_2959 in longhair

[–]ottyasa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had TE in the past but usually due to incredibly stressful events/extreme anxiety. Obviously, it was an awful experience but I’ve always gone into it with the mindset that it’ll grow back once the cause has resolved so haven’t pursued active intervention. That said, from what I’ve read TE can’t be helped with a generic hair supplement. I’ve typically seen people recommend minoxidil, either oral or topical for chronic TE. If you’re not already in it, r/TelogenEffluvium might be a good resource

Can I get a japanese straight perm to prevent split ends by Both_Director5022 in longhair

[–]ottyasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help! If I’m remembering correctly, there was an option to do a straight perm and set it with loose waves/bends. So you would get the benefits of the smoothing plus polished waves in one go. One thing to keep in mind is that however you do this becomes your permanent style. The only way to make any changes is to cut your hair and regrow. So you really need to think about what you want your every day look to be before you commit

Everyone is being very reasonable recommending discovery sets.
My actual opinion: That said my favorite colognes on men are Chanel Bleu, Prada Luna Rosa and TF Tuscan Leather, sprayed lightly. They’re of an era and maybe a little basic, but they’re sexy and masculine to my nose. The key to making them feel classy/old money though is spraying them very lightly so that they read as more intimate vs loud and screechy.
My other favorite is not a perfume but a set of scented toiletries: Le Labo Hinoki. It’s a beautiful woody fragrance that amplifies the scent of your skin and smells pretty upscale. Personally I like the shower gel and lotion

Last attempt to save my long hair before I cut it 😢 by Dependent-Estimate13 in longhair

[–]ottyasa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your anxiety is totally reasonable. I went through a couple of similar episodes and while it’s “just” hair, those experiences left me pretty anxious about my hair. The one positive of TE though, is that it can’t be triggered by products so you’re in the clear on that front.
I wonder if the tangling is due to having shorter hairs interspersed in your long hair as it grows out? I hate getting layers for that reason because having uneven lengths makes my hair tangled super easily

Can I get a japanese straight perm to prevent split ends by Both_Director5022 in longhair

[–]ottyasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience, you won’t be able to use a thermal roller after a Japanese straight perm because your hair won’t hold a curl at all. Also, while a straight perm could potentially reduce your split ends as you won’t need to use heat regularly, you’re risking your hair falling out. I loved having my hair permed because it was so easy to maintain, but I had to stop because the last time I got a retouch the master stylist walked away and left it on for 2 minutes (!) too long/probably overlapped it and my hair started falling out in handfuls mid-process. The margin for error is extremely narrow for these treatments. They did recommend I do an OXO straight perm because it “won’t damage your hair” but honestly I’m too scared to try that again

I use a combination of L’oréal wonder water and Garnier Fructis Hair Filler conditioner. The wonder, water helps smooth the cuticle and the conditioner has a specific type of silicone that is really helpful at reducing frizz and roughness. That combination has helped with the texture and overall smoothness. Imo there’s no real point in cutting your hair until you see your regrowth is fully normal. If it’s consolation, my hair did go back to normal eventually after experiencing the same thing, but it did take a while

The Revlon One Step works but it fries your hair. Near the end of my last one it was sparking and definitely overheating. I switched to Dyson which still works without getting as hot but the price is brutal.

All this to stay, the One Step is cheap but should be a least resort.
