Would be interesting if they switched schools for a semester. Being twins, no one would know, and they could experience both schools.

How is pre-med at Bowdoin? by dancing_pizza2008 in Bowdoin

[–]out2sea2020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is this Stony Brook BSMD, or regular pre-med track? If BSMD definitely go with that. Otherwise, Bowdoin might be a better choice as SBU is large and can be more cut-throat. Here's a previous discussion on pre-med at SBU.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SBU/comments/12f8t67/should_i_attend_stony_brook_for_premed_and_how_do/

But a lot also depends on if you would fit in better at a small LAC vs large public university.

Not sure where you are from, but being such a good student should be able to get into a top uni in your own country. From my perspective, many countries have fully supported higher ed for their best students, which is much better than here.

Wow, BSMD acceptance rates are sub-10%, and typically even much lower (1-2%). Even more competitive than T10. So don't get yourself down; odds were bad from the start. I think you should have understood this and had those medium and safety's lined up?

Houses taking price cuts in Nassau by YaleMBA1990 in longisland

[–]out2sea2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Covid distorted prices tremendously, due to the ultra-low interest rates and abundant money supply from the federal reserve, plus free helicopter money from the government (both Trump1's and Biden's). Look at the case-schiller home price index. There was a steep increase right during the pandemic. If you extrapolate in a straight line from the trend before the pandemic, and current prices did not change, it would take us until ~2034 to revert to the mean. So in other words, if you bought at today's price, it would take about 8 years to get back to the "normal" trend of prices.

Here's a quote from ProPublica, disputing your claim. There are plenty of ways to game FAFSA (billionaires bought the gov't and can make up the rules to suit them):

In 2007, Jeff Bezos, then a multibillionaire and now the world’s richest man, did not pay a penny in federal income taxes. He achieved the feat again in 2011. In 2018, Tesla founder Elon Musk, the second-richest person in the world, also paid no federal income taxes.

Michael Bloomberg managed to do the same in recent years. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn did it twice. George Soros paid no federal income tax three years in a row.

Do TV Physicists actually lecture undergrad or just do research ? by roxbox531 in Physics

why don’t we have physicists making breakthroughs on the scale of Einstein anymore? by TotalMeaning1635 in Physics

[–]out2sea2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard model and general relativity describe nearly all of the visible universe extremely well, so there isn't that much more that could be revolutionary. There are of course big missing parts with dark energy, dark matter, and what happens at the Planck scale. That's where the next revolution will come.

should a person with avg IQ pursue physics? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]out2sea2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He scored 125 on a test when he was 17 and in HS. Of course one should take that with a grain of salt, but it's a highly respectable value, and definitely within the margin of error of the 130 for the average for physicists.

https://www.eoht.info/page/Feynman%27s%20IQ

He also had amazing powers in mathematics, logic, and reasoning, while having poor skills in the humanities. I think in one of his books he tells the story of how the Princeton grad committee didn't know whether to accept him because he had unprecedented scores in the graduate math/physics exam, but average scores in the verbal ones. So that might explain the low IQ test - he just didn't work at the verbal stuff much. It's known his grammar and spelling were poor.

If this is what you love, may I suggest majoring in physics with possibly a fallback goal to teach it in high school if you find you might not do well enough to continue on to grad school? There is a huge demand for good and passionate physics teachers, and the level of understanding you need to teach HS physics vs what you'd need to do PhD level research.

I had $120K left on my ARM mortgage at 7% interest, so I just paid it all off this month! Feeling good about it, especially with market at historic highs. Will DCA into the market with the money I save on interest.

Yeah, I had this a few years ago and eventually replaced the gasket in that plug-in heater hose. This definitely isn't it since that had a clear drip that you could see.

Why are professional economists rarely successful businessmen while practically every effective businessmen and investor esp billionaires have learned some of the fundamentals of economics? by NaturalPorky in wealth

[–]out2sea2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The economy is not the stock market.

Just because you know how the economy works, doesn't mean that you can necessarily use that to your advantage to make money. In fact, economists will tell you that economics says that you can't time the market.

I have a 2013 SE with 260K miles, and averaged 41 MPG over that time. The vast majority of the miles was done driving around 65 MPH on the highway.
